That panorama picture made me think of the pictures we're getting from Mars. The explorers back then were the astronauts of their time, but even more courageous in my opinion. And I think astronauts are over the top of the courage scale. I really hope I'll see human explorer on Mars in my lifetime, even seeing people back on the moon would be fantastic.

I just love how Brady seems to enjoy making these videos. The enjoyment adds a lot to any thing done. And I absolutely loved that south pole map. Especially since it shows together Tierra del Fuego, Australia and Africa, which in all conventional maps are shown pretty far from each other. I've been in Tierra del Fuego and let me tell you, it still felt as far (if not farther) from those places as Buenos Aires. I love when maps show things that are often thought otherwise.

I think Keith is mistaken about that map. It appears to be a map of the Antarctic continent and glaciers, not the ice shelves. It is indeed an accurate map if you exclude all the ice shelves. So it has nothing to do with melt. Anyway, although Antarctic ice sheets have lost quite a bit of ice volume, most of it is merely reduced thickness of the sheets, not reduced area. In fact, the area of the some sheets may have been growing somewhat over the past decade or so. Most of the ice loss is actually land ice from the peninsula, not sea ice from the shelves.

aaahhhh antarctica is so fascinating! i can't pinpoint why i think so. i heard that eventually (maybe this winter? winter in the northern hemisphere i mean so it'd be summer there) my university is going to be offering a study abroad program to antarctica but i graduated a year ago D: on the other hand idk if i'd actually have the guts to do it, and i don't remember what the program was for. but still.

by showing him of his lack of knowledge of a famous person as discussed on HI. Grey was unaware of Scott of the Antarctic until that particular podcast and then subsequently found out that not only was scott famous but particularly famous and he was very much unaware. my comment was meant as a joke highlighting that brady is still ribbing grey for his ignorance

Antarctica doesn't look much different. It has been changing at the same rates it has been since the end of the last ice age, and changes a little each decade, but the permanent ice that is unaffected by small changes is probably identical to the way it looked 100 years ago.

Scott of the antartartic was an arrogant reckless imperialist idiot who got into history by almost doing something extremely difficult, entirely useless, and died in the process, along with some helpers. Not a great role model, in my mundane opinion. Shame there's no mention of Amundsen...

why do you always start with gloves then take them off?
@webbc99
@webbc99 8 лет назад
You're advised not to use gloves because they make you less tactile and dexterous and more likely to tear the pages.
@John_Ridley
@John_Ridley 8 лет назад
Gloves are for handling non-paper objects, and books before opening them, because it's most important to not transfer potentially damaging skin oils and dirt. Once you start handling paper, the gloves come off because with them on you are more likely to damage the paper by simply tearing it because your sense of touch is degraded.

Looking at these makes me kinda sad how awful the instamatic and old cell phone pictures were. Most pictures people have from about 1970 to 2000 are quite awful. I know we had good cameras then too but cheap and easy was what most people used. Disappointing how my family pictures from 1930 are better than the ones from 1990.
