I started working on this cover on November 26th of this year. Just a day or two before, I was still recovering from a sickness that lasted for like a week and a half. It honestly messed me up pretty bad and stopped me from working on music entirely. When I finally got better, I felt motivated to get back into it, since I was even a little burnt out before I got sick.
Scott Pilgrim was fresh on my mind since I just watched the movie for the first few times and the new anime released as well. I’d never really listened to the game’s soundtrack before, but when I heard this song, I INSTANTLY knew I wanted to cover it!
I’m a huge fan of Kubbi (especially the Ember album), so I wanted to channel that sort of sound. I love the guitar sounds on that album and tried to replicate it and put my own spin on it. Neural DSP Soldano was great for this.
As seen in the video, I did some chiptune stuff in Furnace tracker (NES 2A03 + VRC6)! I used to be way into making stuff in Famitracker when I was in high school. It was great for making music portably on school trips, vacations, etc. Huge thanks to Button Masher ( ) for his recent tutorial video about getting into trackers with Furnace. It’s a great video and I honestly feel dumb for not knowing about Furnace, it’s amazing!
But ye, that’s the whole thingy. Did some guitars, did some chiptune stuff. I’m really happy with how it turned out! As a kid I always wanted to make stuff like this, but I didn’t really have the means or the skill to make it happen. 14 or 15-year-old me would be so stoked to know that I made this. :D

Also, I wanted to try and look like someone who wears winter clothes, so I put on this little sweater guy I picked out with my mom recently (thanks Mom!!). My sister lent me her scarf so I could kinda spice it up a bit and I think it looks cool!
Another additional thingy lmao, I got new glasses a month or so ago. This is my first video with them and I'm very glad that they actually look good! The old ones were wayyyyy crooked and a little too tiny imo.
I recorded all the video on my birthday lol (except the drums)

DRUMS
Kick:
GGD Modern and Massive: Guru Paduak 22x16”
SSD: Kick 10 SSD
SSD 5.5: Electro Kick
Snare:
GGD Modern and Massive: Gretsch Bell Brass High Tuned
SSD 5.5: Snare Chili SSD
Toms:
SSD 5.5: Tom Pearl MMC 10-18
Cymbals: GGD Modern and Massive
I used TDR's Molot compressor on the snare and drum bus and I'm loving the way it sounds. I think the limiter section in Molot helped tame some of the snappier, harsher snare rimshot hits (stuff like that really bothers me).
--------
BASS
Logic Pedalboard* → Ampeg SVTVR → EQ → Comp → Multiband Comp → EQ
*The pedalboard chain I have is a Graphic EQ into a compressor (slammed, on the slow setting), into Candy Fuzz through a splitter at like 78% dry. That’s kinda just my standard slightly grimey pop-punk tone.
--------
GUITARS
Clean guitars: Neural DSP Fortin Cali
Rhythm guitars: Neural DSP Soldano (Comp, OD2, Normal, Bright, Crunch, 57 and 421 mics)
Lead guitars: Neural DSP Soldano (Comp, OD1, OD2, Normal, Bright, Crunch, 57 and 421 mics)
--------
SYNTHS
I didn’t really do a lot of synths and they’re all pretty low in the mix. Mostly just sounds from xpand!2 and Logic’s EXS24 (Sampler).
--------
MASTER
This was my first time using TDR’s Limiter 6 plugin and it was a blast! I’m a huge fan of the workflow and I think it’s really nice having a clipper in the same plugin as the limiter. Hopefully it sounds alright!
