I have Stokely's picture right next to Philo's picture in my office. Scott has been super cool to me when I was at my lowest. He also overestimated my distance. Always amazing. I will invite him to my wedding.
I love Scott and believe he is a forehand wonder, but let's be honest... Scott Stokely is not known for being accurate or consistent with his backhand and there is plenty of evidence in his season this year. Much of what he says (regarding backhand) is just simply old school and not ideal. He legitimately walks backward after his x-step making it 10x harder to turn his hips quickly AND forces there to be rounding with a far too long and incorrectly placed reach back. If you are a beginner thinking Scott Stokely will give you the backhand of your dreams I ask that you ignore the information he has on the backhand. This is not against Scott at all but I am just cringing because of the evidence we have now about the backhand. Listen to Scott's forehand advice! But if you are looking for backhand help see Sling Shot Disc Golf, Overthrow Disc Golf, Simon Lizotte slow-mo's, Drew Gibson slow-mo's, Ezra Aderhold, Ben Callaway, Etc. I am telling you, it is NOT a coincidence that all these pros and teachers are saying what they are. Look at the slow-mo evidence!
This is solid analysis. ALL pros who throw over 500 feet have a lot of features in common, and walking up backwards (or reversing) isn't one of them. Scott's coaching helped him improve his nose angle and coiling, resulting in a higher exit velocity and increased distance. Contrary to Scott's walk-up alignment, his feet and hips were better positioned.
Scott is like 8 foot 7. I've been saying everytime i watch a how-to backhand video from him that nearly everything he teaches is wrong. He can throw far with this form because he's absurdly tall. If people wanna know the correct form, smaller guys who throw just as far like Emerson, Paul, Mason, etc. and even Paige are who should be emulated. Nothing against Scott at all tho he means well and is a super nice and cool guy. But he throws far by "reaching back" and "pulling through" because his levers are so long and powerful, not because that particular form is ideal. He also grunts loudly on bigger throws. Like he's really muscling it, whereas other pros do not exert that kind of effort for equal distance.
@@Kristofburger I agree about why Iceberg threw further. He really did have better foot placement and shoulder coil before Stokely "fixed" him. And Iceberg if you are reading this: stick with your run up how it was, focus on throwing straight out towards the hit, focus on your left hand coming through earlier to turn the hips, focus on your brace to translate the power efficiently and not lose any after the hit, and most of all... NOSE ANGLE. :) Keep up the good work!!
Also, a pet peeve of mine is that Scott said not to lean over. This is how we control hyzer angles! the more you lean forward at the hip the more hyzer. This helps tremendously with the consistency and integrity of angle release.
I took Scott Stokely 8 hour class in Waco. Fantastic! At 65 years old at the time my max distance was around 150'. Just turned 66 this week and can now reach 300'. Plus my putting sucked so bad he held me and another guy after the class ended and didn't stop helping us until we found the proper putt for us. My forehand is also around 300' as well now. You have to go back every now and then and watch the video he makes of you of doing the 4 part process in slow motion to get back on track. Best lesson by far! I have my own 18 hole disc golf course on the ranch. My Son and I laid it out to where it would be a medium difficulty type course and as we progress we change it up to make it more challenging.
Scott Stokely is an awesome human. Just the history of the sport that he knows let alone being part of that history is so cool. Great video! I'm jealous that you got to do a one on one lesson with Scott.
This essentially just comes down to lack of fully coiling your upper body backwards. This did me wonders for effortless power. However, it's very easy to fall in the trap of walking backwards if you focus too hard on getting your upper body backwards too early. If your feet are backwards along with your upper body, there's no tension between the lower and upper body as they're both facing backwards, and it becomes slow, inefficient, and not powerful to have to forcefully rotate both lower and upper body back around at the same time. As long as the feet are perpendicular to your upper body when you coil the upper body backwards, then the power should come in the form of merely releasing tension between that coil.
Really well! We got tied second place, I also caddied for him throughout the tournament. And then a few weeks after we played what was then the longest disc golf hole.
I don't get it! It seems like Scott is doing things wrong like facing backwards, reaching back early, turning head back too much. These are things other coaches teach against. I know he's exaggerating the moves but still.
Awesome collab, I love the way Scott teaches and breaks everything down step by step. Definitely makes it a lot easier to understand what's going on in a disc golf throw at high speed when you break it down like that. I'm also looking forward for the 1 month update, it would be really cool if you included a montage of your field work throughout the month in the video.
That wrist thing you mentioned at about 10:10 is huge. Had a private lesson with Philo, and that's the biggest thing that helped my game. The rotation on my putts especially got a lot easier.
Thanks Guys! Muscle memory! Any time I try and change anything every thing goes to Sh*t. I try and try to improve and it seems to just mess my throw up. 😕
I was in Scott's seminar after Ledgestone in Peoria, IL. I need to go back and refresh on his teachings I'll admit. He has helped me get better and shot my first under par round though thanks to his help
I went out today, threw standing up straight, getting my head looking back for a longer reachback, and got the disc through my upper chest. I have been going way to low, bending forward obviously, and I now threw 330-350ft with what felt like 60-70% power to not over do it. About as far as a good 100% would get me before. This video was a gamechanger. Thank you Scott! Amazing. (Oh, and yes I will definately have to relearn my discs now...)
Gotta appreciate the Stokely work ethic - selling and educating in America. His book is a great read, had me fixated with his story and his connection to the history of disc golf. The Icebergian has been lighting up the channel lately, starting with the power grip bonfire !
I’ve loved Scott’s program, I’m in his first Online group…and now I have a forehand for the first time ever. Be willing to rebuild your swing from scratch, and pace yourself!
I love Scott and I’m no pro but I have watched 1000s of hours of pros throwing and they all keep their chin in line with the front shoulder not looking at the disc but looking toward the target
He covers this in this video and many... He shows a specific structure but he always caveats that once you get the concept the minute details might be stylistically different depending on your own body, mechanics, hand shape/size. So he's definitely not a saying there is only one way, but if you are looking to start somewhere to get better and comfortable that's what he's giving.
When I was younger I'm in my mid-forties now but when I was younger I play disc golf a couple times and I loveed it.. fast forward all these years I end up getting a divorce bought me a bag and some discs I've been out there every day for three months sometimes twice a day I'm very passionate about it and I'm hoping by the time I'm 55 I am a pro at this unfortunately I'll be a little older but that's okay if you're thinking about getting into disc golf please do it now don't wait take your kids out there and have some fun because I'm living in regret that I never did and I don't want everyone else to live in regret as well
I remember sling shot disc golf breaking down the pros and they always keep the head forwards. There’s so many ways to tweak a throw. Depends what works for you.
He did say that he has his students purposefully turn their head back more than necessary to break bad habits and then they can tweak it after developing better mechanics
350 with so little effort is amazing. Not counting lucky griplock shanks, I've thrown 350 twice ever, but was def yeeting it. Can't wait to drill this.
Nice development quickly. ❤️👏I'd only comment that this swing is the "old school"-style, which is fine, but not that people would think that this is the only way to throw. Quite a few finnish players now have moved onto a "modern swing" that doesn't have a separate reach back at all. 🇫🇮
Love the video and you both are awesome! But I’m a little confused, in this video you say you backhand distance “caps at 330” but in numerous other videos you are throwing 375-400. Ex: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ggh8XjuQiCo.html
You stole what I was going to say. I've looked around at a lot of his videos and his titles are click baity. He also talked about adding 100 feet to his throw based off his grip... so he went from 230 foot back hand to a 330 then apparently 400 with this video. He is scratching scott's back and scott is scratching his. This is RU-vid 101.
THIS IS INSANE! I literally would try so hard to hit a 320-330! I watched my video of my throwing and holy crap I was WAAY off!! Didn’t do a single thing on this video. I just went out, I literally stand still and I threw over 300! I did a slow x walk and threw 370!!! I’m losing my mind haha thank you!!!
That's why most heavy weight boxers are tall and not fully jacked. They can snap off knockout punches like nothing. There is always exceptions though. Ie Mike Tyson or Paul Mcbeth. And it's bc they work twice/three times harder than the guys w the natural gifts.
@@d.harris5971 tyson was short and stout, so his power was closer to his body, to take advantage of that he would aggressively work himself to the inside of his opponent… otherwise I agree.
Took a lesson from SS once, utterly worthless. It was he was reading a script and made my form way worse. Patrick Brown was the best teacher I’ve ever had. Jon Baldwin and Johne McCray were great too. Nothing beats practice though.
I would have loved this if it wasnt for my home country! im Norwegian so we have 6 months with much snow. I live in the wrong country with discgolf as a hobby, hahah!
yeah also many of the top form gurus on dgcoursereview technique & strategy subforum recommend keeping your eyes on your target until the point that your upper body coiling naturally draws them back because it engages the oblique sling. thoughts?
Dude I had no idea you had Stokely on your channel! I bet this was epic. I see you can't stop smiling 😁 Now I also know where some of your form comes from! Crazy awesome!
Great video... I love how Scott admits upfront that he is only arrogant in disc golf alone and humbly nothing else because disc golf is all he knows and does. I truly respect that and identify with it personally. I've watched a ton of videos and he's a heck of a insightful coach. In all his free youtube content he really seems to know the challenge issues/areas going on in a students mind when being coached on new approach/technique and has adapted a very insightful style to keep a student from overthinking meltdown or analysis/paralysis. That is a sign of a great teacher in any area let alone disc golf. As soon as i get a break i'm going to be signing up for his program for sure.
9:03 on .25 speed is the actual outcome and looks great. Does Scott teach to start out on ani or was that a biproduct of over emphasizing standing up straight? Also, what disc were you throwing?
I made these changes 2 months ago and think the idea of Slow is smooth and smooth is far is bad wording for ideal form. I think smooth makes you think tension free and relaxed. That leads to leaning forward for many beginners. Keeping my shoulders flexed upright and arm flexed the entire backswing guarantees a flat or slight anhyzer release before the slingshot. Also feeling tension from potential energy building makes it easy to feel when you have the most power to turn the potential into kinetic energy.
Great ad for Scott and lesson for the rest of us who don't get that opportunity. His teaching, personality, and ability are all reasons why he's in my top 5 current pros.
So the reason why you would consider throwing higher is because the lower your upper arm is pointing, the shorter your effective lever distance is in the swing plane. For example, put your arm as low as you can reasonably go, and hold the disc correctly parallel to your forearm. Now hold the upper arm completely parallel to the ground. That effective lever distance increases the higher up the arm goes. You still have to make adjustments with your entire arm, how you hold the disc, etc, but that's the essential argument.
@@IceBergTV he came to a tournament I played at a couple years ago before he was big on RU-vid... I missed that opportunity. Good luck with all your upcoming practice in the next few weeks to hit 400. It will come if you practice.
I started his first 6 month class. The first few lessons were huge for me. Fixed things in my game that have been wrong for 20 years. I stopped the class because I broke my ankle at work, and couldn't play, but it is utterly impossible for me to recommend his 6 month class more vehemently.
The only thing Scott is slightly off on here is about standing completely upright. Your core 100% can not activate properly in an upright position. Anyone reading this try to tighten your core standing upright, then crunch down slightly and try it. It’s not even close to feeling the same. And as in every athletic movement, the core is key to the upper levels of power. Not saying Scott is wrong by any means. I’m sure this method works for a lot. But there’s not a single person who’s going to get 500+ with no core involvement or putting spin rate over core power. The best combo is utilizing the core to accelerate the spin. Would love to hear some thoughts on this
