- edit - I do not have any formal training with swords, so please take what I say with a grain of salt. Hope you enjoy:)
This is a beginners guide to basic sword attacks, blocks, and form using the Scottish Claymore. In addition, a brief overview of some of the cultural and historical aspects of the weapon are included

modern English "missnames" the swords That's actually a Cladiheamh dà làimh (basicly meaning 2 hand sword) A Cladiheamh mòr (meaning big sword) was what we now call basket-hilted swords. We think they called the basket-hilt a Cladiheamh mòr bc it was bigger and more broad than the smaller side swords, hangers, and Rapier. Cladiheamh dà làimh being a mouth full, you can see why they went w the Cladiheamh mòr (claymore) for generic big sword.

I have been told that what we refer to as the claymore is misnamed before, but I’ve actually never seen the spellings laid out like that with an explanation of the etymology. Thanks for that!
@BeardedChieftain
@BeardedChieftain 22 дня назад
..and in fact with the Gaeilge/Gaidhlig group of languages, it is also a claidheamh-mòr ... both names fit this sword because they simply describe the tool. However, a Basket Hilt Broadsword, whilst being a claidheamh-mòr is not a Cladiheamh dà làimh which iterally makes the characterisation narrower to a native speaker. Tá fáilte romhat

Thanks so much! I'm trying to create a short film/duel on my other channel and I really want to add that hint of realism to it! Your half an hour video is helping a lot with teaching my friend on how to fight with a style using the claymore. A prop claymore isn't going to be used nor a real one. He'll be using a lightsaber prop. However, he's interested with longswords and claymores, so knowing the basics is already a big step to making this film! Thanks once again!

Thanks man! Yes I am planning to, but it just takes more time than I thought it would. I have filmed footage for 3 new videos, one on a long sword, a messer, and a Dane axe. Now I need to edit it down into cohesive videos and do a voice overlay for some parts. Between working full time, family, and other hobbies I’m just struggling to find time / energy for this. However, I’ve been really moved by how many people have liked this video and the positive comments, so I promise I will get more videos out soon!

If you want to find out how the claidheamh mòr was swung, go and look at some videos of the Highland field sport of Shinty or Camanachd. Tradition dictated that even right handed people swung long handled axes or the above sword with the left hand forward.

My go to spot for sword shopping is Kultofathena.com they are a company based out of Illinois that gathers medieval arms and armor together from a bunch of production company’s, and sells them. The sword I use in this video is actually on their website, it’s the Hanwei Scottish Claymore - Antiqued.

I haven’t played in ages, but here’s my thoughts from what I’ve seen: Pros: 1. Good use of space. Long sword = long reach. 2. Doesn’t waste energy recovering every swing by letting his momentum move into the next attack or block. 3. Good use of the entire weapon with static blocks. Cons: 1. The sword Itself is comically large / thick. Not usable at all by a human. 2. Wasted energy attacking from a low guard position. Everytime you swing up you have to fight the weight of the sword instead of working with it. 3. Weird timing for pommel strikes. The clip I saw showed him initiating pommel strike attacks from his guard position which would be a very inefficient and dangerous way yo attack.

@BizarreBear
@BizarreBear 10 месяцев назад
He probably did…. The thing is the Braveheart claymore is so extremely inaccurate. Wallace used a claymore type sword but it had no leather wrap and the crossgaurd looked much different than what was represented in the film. (Also Wallace never wore a kilt as they were not invented until 16th century ;)
@stanisawzokiewski3308
@stanisawzokiewski3308 10 месяцев назад
@@BizarreBear I know kilts were later fashion. Regarding the sword attributed to Wallace, its also a later sword. Two handed swords were only starting appear at that time and its unlikely they were already popular in Scotland during his life.

@williamp.5253 2 года назад
Hey man, Ive always wanted to try Behourd, it looks super fun. As for fighting a sword and shield opponent in a 1v1 setup while using a claymore. I would recommend using the larger weapon to create and maintain distance from your opponent. If you can, don’t let him rush you and get inside your guard. Try to work around the side of your opponent in a circular motion, so that their shield isn’t as useful, and look for openings to strike. Thanks for commenting man, and I hope this helps!!

Fantastic Demonstration👍👍👍 Perhaps the most terrifying weapon for any opposing soldier to face down on the late Medieval-Renaissance Era European battlefields would be the Claymore Sword, most especially when being wielded & swung by a savagely rampaging Scottish Highland tribesmen or a primevally fueled Irish Gallowglass mercenary, both out to wreak devastating & unmatched havoc, all animal ferocity & great dexterity, brutish power & expert skill, nasty viciousness & outstanding professionalism, this primal disregard for death yet all without sacrificing their exceptional sword handling ability. The Western European Samurai of their time (1300-1700)! Great Job My Man!
@MrSmokeyBaer
@MrSmokeyBaer Год назад
First, that is not a 'claymore' it is a two hander or claidheamh dà-làimh. The claymore is a Scottish basket hilt broadsword or backsword (claidheamh mòr). The first use of the word claymore came in the late 1700's in a London paper describing the highland charge at the battle of Culloden and was an attempt at an Anglization of claidheamh mòr (Kli eve more) or sword big. It is called that because at the time rapiers were coming into fashion, and much the same as the broadsword name, used to distinguish between the cut and thrust and the rapier which was thinner and could not cut all that well, if at all. There are no contemporary texts showing the use of a Scottish two hander, so no comments can be made on your techniques ......... there were no two handers at Culloden ........

@MrSmokeyBaer
@MrSmokeyBaer Год назад
@@williamp.5253 You caught me, I did not watch the video. I only followed the link out of curiosity. As I said, we have no historical reference to base how these weapons were used (half a millennium ago) for two main reasons: First, they were incredibly expensive to make as getting the balance of needed strength, usable weight, and alignment. and Second (probably due to the first) were mainly bodyguard and house kerl type weapons not commonly seen. If you look at the training manuals for a broadsword/saber of just 200 years ago you find that a battlefield and a dual (one on one) are two totally different environments calling for a different set of skills. By the way, if you mentioned it, William Wallace did NOT use a two hander ..... he might have obtained one, but even Blind Harry does not mention him using one ..... thanks for the reply and keep on with your videos

Stop, for the love of God, calling it a "Scottish Claymore"...when you say "Claymore", you only have three choices... an Irish/Scottish sword or an anti personal mine. So as long as you say "Claymore", everyone knows you are speaking about Scotland...because why would anyone pay attention to the fact that the word is also Gaeilge (Irish).
