Thx Ron . I’ve been having fun cutting my lawn with a manual reel mower . I bought three . One new the others at a discount. My grass never looks so good . Thx Ron . Loved seeing you on George’s stream.
Thanks Ron, this is so timely for me. I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while but didn’t know which to go for, or if it was even worth getting one. I appreciate you taking the time to review .
Glad it was useful Brain. There are other options out there like the Earthway that's well-regarded. I've just had good results with the 20" which is why I recommend that one. Let me know if I can help answer anything else.
Ron, great content 👌 . I own a fiskars 18" manual reel mower; I am so happy it. The blade stay sharp for up to 5 years. It cuts as low as 1". BTW your lawn is looking splendid man. Next season I'm definitely going to give you some competition. Cheers.
I just bought the Great States 5 blade reel mower. Works great at 1.5. Haven’t taken it down to the lowest of .5 yet. New home been ridding all the years of neglect and weeds.
Ron, I recently pulled out of storage a Scott’s 16 inch reel mower I bought in, u ready, 1965!! Used it for several years until I graduated to power mowers. Last week I had it sharpened ( never had before) and used it to mow my lawn. About 12k sq ft. It was work but enjoyable. I have it set at 2 inches and since it’s so old, it is heavy, I’m sure much heavier than today’s 16 inch Scott’s. It’s called silent mower, ball bearings. Love it but don’t intend to use it in height of summer heat and humidity. I’m too old for that.
That is awesome Bruno. It's cool that you dusted it off and took it out for a spin. That's an awesome mower to have. I bet it is quite a bit heavier than the modern versions. Nice work. 😎
lol. To the first comment. “I’m single...” hahaha, good for you. Anyway, great video. Second person telling me to get this manual reel mower. I’m sold! Can’t wait until next season. Thanks for the content.
I try to catch the spam comments as soon as they come through. Was late on that one. Glad you found the review help Meister. Thanks for watching the content.
Hello Ron I was on the Live Show last night and you gave me a link for the 18" Scotts Pro Mower, is that one as good as the 20" model, I will be receiving it from Amazon on Monday. Should I keep it or return it and get the 20" model? I saw a negative review for the 18" model. Thanks again for the link.
I have not used one myself, several of your fellow RU-vid stars (John Perry/Lawncology, The Lawn Whisperer and Ryan Knorr) have used it it with great success. I do have it in my wife’s Amazon cart as a hint....lol
With gas prices so high this year, I am seriously considering buying one. I have a Cub Cadet 1554 riding mower but it needs repair on some electrical issue that I haven’t been able to fix after buying a new starter and solenoid and a ground wire is smoking and also have a Cub Cadet walk behind 19 inch cut mower. I use those for about 3 acres near the house and a Farmall 140 tractor with Woods 5 foot mower behind that for larger areas.
@@taylorbrawner2052 gotcha. That McLane 10 blade is pretty nice I'm sure. Most people only use the manual reel mower as a gateway into a powered unit. That's why I think the 20" represents the best value for money. No reason to overspend on a manual when most people are just going to end up with a TruCut or McLane anyways.
@@RonHenry totally agree. That’s exactly what I used it for, as that gateway to the McLane. I don’t recommend the fiskars to people over the other less expensive options out there for push reels.
The fiskars is easier to push so it is easy to go to fast. I had the scotts but the handle broke so we upgraded. I like the cut with the fiskars better, but I had to learn to slow down.
Ok Ron I'm going to order one today. Did that mower come with a basket?12,000 sq ft? Man by the time you got done you had to start over again 😊I have a new lawn I planted. Only 900 sq ft but it's been a bear trying to get it to grow. I've re-planted it 8 times or more.
Nice job on this video. I have some experience with reel mowers. I never tried the Scotts but have the Fiskars, Great States and the Earthwise and they all have their good points and some bad points. I use them all for different reasons in between using my Liberty 43 and if you like striping with minimum mods they all can stripe well. :)
The funny thing is american lawn mower company produces. A majority of the reel mowers. They make the scotts, great states american lawn mower brand, and i think remington.
Hey brother I'm actually thinking of getting a 20 inch one. My worries are if you can help me is how often do you have to sharpen it and how hard is it to sharpen
I mowed with mine for a season and a half without sharpening. If you’re only cutting grass with it shouldn’t be an issue. Sharpening kits are available on Amazon I believe. Something like this: amzn.to/30M8cK3
Hmmm.. I haven't seen that one Brandon. It's not difficult to do though. Remove the wheels and there's a plate behind it that you remove a bolt allowing you to rotate it to a different hole. That will lower the overall cutting height.
I have this intense and large 70 degree hill in my backyard. Coincidentally it has the nicest grass of all my yard. I just bought the home and the previous owners spent $10k install this nice green turf. Would a reel mower work well on hills?
A reel mower can work great on a slope ikhan920. Here's me cutting my sloped front lawn with one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vLpoqhtDkmY.html Hope this helps.
How often annually do you think 🤔 Carbonpro G should go down? It recommends basically monthly, but is that during the growing season or just a monthly application?
It helps improve the soils ability to retain moisture and frees up nutrients. Because you're feeding the soil directly it's something you can do year-round. I wouldn't do it if the ground is frozen but outside of that apply it when ever your budget permits.
@@RonHenry Thank you. We are moving into our new house in December and it is Bermuda(no clue what type). Just moved back to Texas from Massachusetts and I want to get a head start on the lawn. Backyard is going to get wrecked by pool installation, but who doesn’t love projects.
Hi Robert. Yes. It's sitting low like that in the video because I'm not holding it. It's on a hinge so you have some flexibility on where it is when you're pushing the mower. It's not a fixed angle.
Hey Ron ... I'm late to the party ... just stumbled on this vid. Looking to make that transition from rotary to reel but my issue is I have a lot of trees in my lawn and there are always a fair amount of dried twigs etc. Would a reel mower (specifically this one) be appropriate for such a space ... or would there be some jamming issues? If YOU don't have any experience with this kind of situation (your space looks beautiful and open, not a tree in sight lol) but someone else does, I'd also appreciate their input. BTW, great vid ... gonna go check out the rest of your stuff!
Heya CGF. No reel mower is going to do well with sticks and twigs. You ideally don’t want to cut anything other than grass with a reel mower. They run at tight tolerances so you have to be more careful with them than rotary mowers. Thanks for watching the content.
@@RonHenry Thanks that makes sense, I'l have to exclusively use it on my front patch then which has none of that debris. Last question, how long would you guess the blades would stay sharp if I mow 1000sq' (my front patch) thrice weekly? Best guesstimate? ;)
@@wollins2 If you only cut grass should be able to get a season out of it. By only grass I mean, not small sticks, twigs or stone. With 1000 square feet, you should be in good shape for a while. It's a guestimation though. :-)
Depends on what your goals are. If you want to mow at 4" the Fiskars is probably a better choice. It'd be interesting to see how well it actually cuts grass when mowing that high. Reel mowers tend to perform better at lower heights of cuts.
Great video. I have been working on making the move from rotary to reel and recently bought the Fiskars 18". One thing I have noticed is that I get a ripple effect when cutting. The ripples are even, almost like an old style washboard. Have you experienced anything like that with a manual reel mower and know what I might do to avoid it?
Hi John. Yep. I know what you’re talking about. Usually it’s from the mower bouncing slightly as you’re cutting. It could also be a dull reel. I’d start by slowing down your pace slightly and see if that helps things. If my mower bounces you’re going to get an uneven cut. Hope this helps.
@@RonHenry Thanks for replying so quickly. I was actually out messing with it again just now. Dull blade is probably out. The mower is new right out of the box and I adjusted it so that I was getting a good cut on the paper test. Bouncing could be a thing though. The yard needs a good leveling (on tap for next month). It's builder grade from 3 years ago and has never been leveled. The mower is pretty light and does have a tendency to bounce around. I wasn't sure if the bouncing was contributing because the waves were exactly even. Almost like they were drawn with a ruler. I also thought I might be taking too much off at once. We've had several days of rain and it got longer than I usually keep it. I rotary mowed it (a little wet) a couple hours before I used the reel. But because it was wet and long, still couldn't get it as short with the rotary as I usually keep it. When I went back yesterday with the reel, I had it set at 1.5" and got the "waves". Today, I picked a section and went back over it, but this time, set higer at 2". Even set a half inch higher than the day before I was getting quite a lot of clippings. I'd also read about walking/ground speed being a potential problem so I walked more slowly. There was still a problem with the waves, but it was not nearly as noticeable. I'm thinking it may be a combination of factors. I'm going to try to mow at least every other day with a smaller change in height of cut for a couple of weeks to see if it continues to improve as I cut with the reel. I'm trying to avoid dropping the large expense on a greens mower while I take care of some other yard and house projects. And I only have about 1/3 of what you used to mow with your Scotts. So I should be able to manually reel mow until I am ready to sink the money into a gas reel mower. Thanks again for your advice. Keep the great content coming.
Great job on the unboxing and review guys! Keep going with your content. Thanks for watching. 👍😎 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8D151LzmOd4.html
BAD ADVICE DO NOT RINSE just wipe with a cloth and regularly apply some wd40 silicon spray or something to the moving parts but no water if you want to use it for more than a season or two
You can rinse and then apply lubricant mr. big. Mow Scotts mower is over 4 years old and still works great. Have you tried anything other than WD-40? Thanks for watching. 👍😎
Not by default Jesus. You would probably add a stripe kit to it or make one. All it takes is a roller or a weighted pieces of pipe behind the mower to create the stripes. Hope this helps.
