Henry, I am really impressed with how well everything turned out with this mower. It seems as though everything that could have turned out really negative turned out really positive. Whenever I pull my John Deere mower decks, I always rotate the steering wheel either all of the way to the left or right which really helps the mower deck actually clearing between the front and rear wheels. The best way to have smooth steering action is to use the grease gun.for its intended purpose. It’s really amazing how many people do not know about lubricating their mower, especially the steering spindles and front axles and their mower deck spindles if they have grease fittings. I am not saying this about you, Henry - But Just Saying In A General Sense Of Things.

I sold the same Scotts I had with its original 16hp Kohler for $700. Two months later I sold another one with a 22hp v twin and a 46" deck for $900. NJ prices. Really good mowers. To be fair though, they were mint.

Nice job Henry. You don't need a super big hole... the muffler pipe, plus a little clearance..... It'll be fine. Simplicity used to do that. I hand a Landlord Tractor a million years ago, it just had a hole in the hood, for the exhaust pipe..... I still say, someday, take apart a transmission. You could add a ton of value to your process & skills.... Pick up perfectly nice mowers with blown transmissions, fix it, sell it for BIG money..... I'm such a perfectionist, I would have picked up an idler pulley.... Or at least, get the bearing number, order the bearing. But that's me. To maximize ROI, you're probably doing the right thing, I guess.... I'm totally speculating, but you give me the vibe of a famous retired guy... So invest a little time. You can get drunk & watch Netflix later... Take apart a transmission one of these days.... It's not like you lack mechanical aptitude..... And just so we are fair about this, I am a famous retired guy, so I am allowed to say that.... I'm not making fun of you. I am tipping my cap to you sir.... Also, not for nuthing, but I love how you bomb between your mint Acura Legend and your mint Benz, on a crappy tractor with iffy steering.... Holy crap dude. Be smart..... Be smart, Henry..... c'mon man... I love your videos Sir. Later.

Those bearings freeze all the time. I do exactly what he does, lube em up abn break them free with vise grips, good to go! Not necessarily bad, just dust dirt and crap build up stops them.

To remove the deck put a 2x4 under each side of the deck then lower the deck to sit on the boards, the pins can be removed very easily, try the same when putting the deck back on. Thank you for the video.

Henry, instead of a large hole as you described, why not make a hole big enough for the exhaust pipe to fit after you close the hood instead?

haha. awesome. I have never seen a lawn tractor doing wheelie. A new belt will make it flip backwards. how about moving the engine to the left. A hole on the side will work too. 😄 Looking at how close the belt is to the right; the engine could move left. However, it might not be enough for the exhaust. Good luck buddy. Great job so far

How about cutting off the exhaust pipe, and add a heat shield? The muffler in front did not have an exhaust pipe sticking out of the muffler

the deck is very much like a John Deere STX 38, setting it on a couple of 2x4 blocks make it simple

I think that John Deere Scotts is a far better rider than any MTD product IMO. Had a few, built great. Part of that older good generation of Deeres.

Yes, if I was a store, but as a flipper, I’d sell it as is and tell the new owner, you may have to change the belt.

@MowersNBlowers You got cheap for a $20 belt when you already had it apart? A person buying an old repowered mower might at least expect it to be replaced. Not everyone is handy and it will require removing the deck...again. I dunno, seems odd to not change it when chunks are missing from it. And the missing bolt? You gonna tell your buyer to figure out where it goes too? Lol

The good news is you finally got it running, moving, and mowing, and almost ready to sell. The bad news is your drive belt has a huge crack in it (ready to break anytime soon), the engine is underpowered by today's standards, and the side of the hood will have a hole cut out.

That whole thing about the engine underpowered by todays standards is horse manure. I have 456cc Briggs flatheads as though if not tougher than those junko 540cc Briggs engines their calling 21 hp. Its a lie. 465cc @12 hp to 540cc at 21hp is well over rated. They made these Scotts with 16hp Kohlers, nearly same engine just a little higher cc's.

@@MowersNBlowers Yea, I sold one that had a 12hp Briggs flathead two weeks ago, someone put that on their it originally had an 8hp and than sold a 1978 with a Briggs 8hp, I tagged you to it on insta, those are 318cc, big drop down, both same size machines. The 78" had just as much power, it also cut way better and didn't kick up dirt on me like that one with the 12hp had. It had extra wings bolted to the blade, it was also used far less and in better shape. Sometimes its not just about the power of the motor, theirs other contributing factors to the performance of a machine. But those 12hp flattys on those Black bueaty Murrays, those engines are just as powerful as these new Inteks. I don't notice any difference, other than their far more reliable and last way longer. I'm sure you've noticed that by now too. Often times, if I have a blown intek, I throw a flathead on in its place, I was about to do it to that Craftsman with that 540cc I showed you, luckily don't have to, just a blown head gasket.
