On today's SCP Lore video, we take a look at SCP-1179, which I've dubbed the beast from below -- a 100 foot-tall demon, not at all dissimilar to the Balrog from Lord of the Rings.

I mean, to be fair, Tolkien was greatly inspired by Norse myth himself. He lifted several Dwarven names directly from the Poetic Edda. I wouldn't be surprised if both the Balrog and SCP-1179 share the same inspiration.

Oh the Cross-over used for this SCP is delightful. Using a Balrog to explain the Centralia coal mine fire, which was also the inspiration for Silent Hill

Robert Agu Oh the Balrog would literally just have killed every other thing in Silent Hill. Balrog obeys Sauron, without a Sauron, Balrog kills because it can, and it doesn’t like sharing power, well, THEY don’t like sharing power. Balrogs are extremely powerful, and Sauron pretty much dominated them. When the only way to dominate a Balrog requires a ring that essentially makes you a major god, you know they’re bad news.

Robert Agu Pyramid head uses a giant butchers blade as his weapon, not only that but the Balrog literally towers over every other creature in Silent Hill, and is way more durable. Balrogs also have access to magic if I recall correctly, which would definitely fuck over anything Silent Hill can throw at it, because RPG's apparently don’t exist in the entire run of that series. Bullets would most likely just piss it off more than anything else.

Yeah to be honest this SCP did seem a bit weak in its origin. There are some SCPs though that are very clearly ripped from mythology/fiction that still have fantastic lore though, like 076 (Abel) and 073 (Cain) which are obviously based on the Christian story of Abel and Cain.

The one thing that keeps this SCP interesting is the fact that there is actually a mine that’s on fire in Pennsylvania, in the now abandoned town of Centralia, which also happens to be the place that inspired Silent Hill.

It’s backstory and discovery perfectly parallels the coal mine that caught fire in what is now considered a ghost town called Centralia. I’ve personally been there and in the mine which also happens to be the largest vein of a particular coal type in the world. That may account for the huge numbers and rationalizes it’s size. Tolkien was a huge mythology nerd, and was especially fond of scandinavian myths, it's highly likely that he drew off of the yurtur myth when creating the balrogs

6:20 - 7:05 It's essentially both. The Balrog comes from LOTR, written by Tolkien; and Tolkien took much of his inspiration from Norse Mythology; such as light and dark elves, trolls, and dwarfs. Smaug comes from the Norse myth of Beowolf. Midgard literally means middle-earth. I have no doubt that the Balrogs were inspired by Sirta. Lastly, if you were wondering Hobbits were one of the things he made up himself.

It's been commonly known that Tolkein was inspired from various mythologies from Norse and British to the legend of Beowulf to even old Irish and Gaelic tales and myths. So I wouldn't be surprised if the descriptions of the Balrog and SCP-1179 are very similar if they are based off of the same myth.

I love your SCP content, and I hope it's something you continue alongside your main content whenever you find it interesting. #AskEck I'd personally like to know how spacecraft in general and UNSC ships in particular navigate both vacuous and atmospheric environments, since modern ion engines can't break Earth's gravity and reaction engines would be really inefficient.

Tolkien did take many things from Norse mythology and use it in Lord Of the Rings. For example, Gandalf and Thorin were both dwarves in Norse mythology. So for SCP-1179 to look like a Balrog and be based off of Norse mythology is very fitting.

It being a Balrog makes sense according Tolkien, especially with it being so old because Tolkien said he always imagined Middle Earth being a mythological origin for the real world. Although the Jotun inspiration does make sense I do agree it sounds a lot like a Balrog. Who, btw, are miaer? Not sure how to spell it but a sort of minor angel creature thing that can shapeshift in some capacity.

This SCP seems to all be inspired in part by the real-life town under which a coal fire burns endlessly. I believe it too is located in Pennsylvania and was the inspiration for Silent Hill. Particularly in version shown in the film

SCP 999 (I THINK is the one) This infinitely powerful orange glob is so strong that even the regenerating hate crocodile did not stand against it's cuddles of comfort and hugs of happiness. NOTHING can defeat it, since nothing can raise a hand against it. Truly the most powerful SCP.

I love how they connected this to real life. There’s a legitimate coal mine that caught fire and they had to evacuate the town above because it continue to burn below and spews our noxious gasses. I think it was in Pennsylvania too. Lol.

Well, all of us know where Site-179 is. This is obviously underneath Silent Hill, Pennsylvanian. File should mention the cognito hazard above ground, if that dosen't have a second independent SCP entry.
