Ah your falling to the trap of thinking keter=dangerous. Keter is how difficult it is to contain not how many mass graves it can fill.
@ladeao1552

Although according to some if we launch 682 into the sun it could fill all of them.

Something like a more powerful nuke would be considered safe because it will never do anything for as long as it contained properly, even if it had a capability to destroy half the planet.

Ah yeah, the "don't fire it into the sun" comment relates to one story where the foundation tries to kill 682 by firing it into the sun, and it instead absorbs the energy of the sun, growing to the size of the sun and devouring the solar system.

"Max Lombardi tales" stuff is an absolute blast, shame he isn't as popular as some of the other SCP characters. Also fun thing about SCP-682, he was nearly actually killed by SCP-2599 a 14 year old korean girl but was only saved by a quirk of her powers, she did beat the absolute shit out of him the. The issue of "oversimplified SCP " comics covering that is one of the best issues imo.

Safe/ euclid/ keter are containment classes, not danger classes. Safe- put it in a box and it and its effects stay in the box. It doesn’t matter if when the box is opened the world ends, it’s still safe Euclid- takes ongoing effort/ resources/ upkeep to stay “in the box,” but if the correct procedures are followed then it stays in the box Keter- it either can’t be put in a box, its effects don’t stay in the box, or it keeps getting out of the box A good example to show how this doesn’t necessarily mean danger is SCP 4999. He’s a guy who shows up if someone is dying alone to hold their hand and offer them a cigarette. He’s perfectly harmless and has done nothing but good, but because he only appears when someone is dying alone he’s “uncatchable,” thus uncontainable, and thus Keter
@whym6438
@whym6438 Год назад
Another example: SCP-342 is considered "Safe", despite its effects being all kinds of nope, because you can put it in an envelope, put the envelope in a box, and forget about it.

That old serpent. Anyways, 682 is really the prime example of all the trends of early SCP, back when they were still figuring it out. It has since been giving a dozen different backstories in relation to other SCPs. Some claim he is actually 999s brother.
@defies4626
@defies4626 Год назад
682 is the definition of 'too angry to die'. They threw the sonuvabitch into a true void; a literal spot where nothing can exist, and it came out angrier and just fine. They have tried everything to kill it. 'God' has outright said that it is not one of theirs, and cannot see it. There is exactly ONE time in the entire SCP multiverse where it died. And we don't discuss that version of events lest the thing that did it decides to pay attention to the 'main' timeline. 682 is keter class because it will never give up trying to fuck with the foundation, it takes literally drowning it in some of the strongest acids known to man to keep it from running riot, and they simply can't kill it. 682 is the Joker to the Foundation's Batman, their eternal and vile opposite even if there are more powerful pieces on the board. It literally talked someone to death, and the recording was so horrifying that they deleted it because it was making others kill themselves the second they heard it. It has been retroactively implied that 682 is aware of the... *thing* that made SCP-5000 kick off, and that's why it's disgusted with all life.
@rafabuda0

Keter doesn't mean it's world ending dangerous, just difficult to contain. Plenty of Safe and Euclid SCP's could end the world.
@ShinigamiSamaH
@ShinigamiSamaH Год назад
The classification is for "how easy it is the object can breach containment" and not how dangerous they are. For example, if 999 the tickle monster try to escape every day to go toward a human city and give them hugs, and can often succeed in escaping, then it would be Keter. On the opposite end, if a dangerous and world ending SCP can be safely stored away with no risk of breach, it would be Safe.

One of the main reasons why 682 constantly being referenced by other authors is that back in the early days it is *THE* definitive overpower SCP that people use as the benchmark for power scaling. That aspect is toned down now since the world building expanded and writers get more creative.

Better to let 682 drift aimlessly, than to let him adapt to living on The Sun, and find a way back. Item class designates difficulty of containment, not danger. Safe- you can put it in a box and expect to still find it there without incident. Euclid- put it in a box and it'll probably try to get out, so watch/monitor it. Keter- Put it in a box and it actively tries to escape, destroys the box, or is too big to go in the box in the first place. Thaumiel- It is the box Apollyon- Containment isn't even an option, keep quiet and hope it doesn't notice us. Archon- Putting it in a box does more harm than good.

SCP-682 was hostile before the foundation even contained it, so it just hates life in the first place, the foundations attempts at killing it have nothing to do with it. Also, as someone else has said in the comments, the foundation really did try killing it by throwing it into a void where absolutely nothing exists and anything that gets thrown in there gets erased from existence. But 682 has such goddamn powerful regeneration that it somehow managed to restore its own existence a a few minutes later. Speaking of that void of true nothingness, it is called SCP-3930. There is an scp explained video on it that talks about just that scp. But the exploring series has a video called "Exploring the SCP Foundation: Pattern Screamers" which explains A LOT more detail about what exactly that SCP is as well as other Pattern Screamers. I would recommend checking out SCP-3930 first and then going over to the exploring series to learn more about the Pattern Screamers. Fair warning: Pattern Screamers ARE a mindf**k, keep in mind that some really confusing concepts are going to be involved.

Let me remind you of how the object classes work. Safe: The SCP can be reliably placed into containment indefinitely, even if there are some circumstantial issues, such as having to regularly offer it the souls of virgin women once every full moon, or having to pay it rent in old currencies that are no longer being produced. Should the SCP break containment, it's effect on the general populous can be trivialized by standard cover-up procedures, or dismissed entirely as mundane phenomena. Euclid: The SCP is more complicated and less predictable. While it can be contained, or at least isolated from the general public, long-term containment is generally compromised in some fashion, such as sporadic teleportation, a notable spread in the anomaly's area of effect that is hard or impossible to mitigate, unpredictable changes in behavior or ability, higher dimensional capabilities that the Foundation cannot readily deal with, such as being able to shift through time, or simply more instances of the same SCP showing up. Despite these issues, the SCP is generally more of an annoyance to contain than a true threat to human life or the continuation of the Foundation's policy of secrecy regarding the existence of anomalies, typically because the anomaly tends to somehow mitigate its own effects or is on such a small scale that it can be dismissed as ghosts, cryptids, serial killers, thieves, cops, the IRS, wild animals, freaky weather, overly enthusiastic Christmas carolers, absurdly bad luck, THOSE DAMN KIDS!, or what have you. Keter: The SCP will inevitably breach containment, and can cause severe damage in the event of a breach. Effects can range from a massive loss or the total extinction of human life, the destruction of all reality, the knowledge that there is a creature the size of a country sleeping in the Pacific, the complete subversion or destruction of reality itself, the revelation that we are not alone in the multiverse, the idea that a multiverse even exists, the evidence of God or gods, or the concept that we have apparently missed a whole number between 1 and 10. These are the things that get the entire Foundation moving when something goes wrong, as opposed to just local staff, and it tends to require a lot of resources to contain, maintain containment, and recontain it if something goes wrong. The reason SCP-682 is labeled Keter and not Euclid is because it makes regular escape attempts in pursuit of its omnicidal drive to murder all life, and while its abilities are fairly well understood, it's exact interaction with certain things, such as the sun, and the upper limits of its indestructibility and adaptability are not understood; if it gets loose, it will start killing everything, and nuking it will probably just turn it into Godzilla, atomic breath and all, so the Foundation is trying to keep it contained moreso than it is trying to destroy it. One tale for 682 involves them shooting it into the sun, only for it to absorb the sun and destroy the solar system. Another variant of this concept has it slingshotting its way back to Earth, still on fire, and rampaging for an uncomfortably long amount of time before it burned itself out and was back to normal. Another instance involved them sending 682 to another dimension by chucking it down a hole, only to be met with another instance of 682 literally flying out of the hole along with a note from another version of the Foundation telling them to fuck off.

Well, keter does not describe danger. But the thing that makes 682 extremely dangerous is its ability to adapt to anything you throw at it. So the example here is the sun, imagine if it survives and adapt to the sun.
