WOW!!! That is clean. I would rather sink $5000 into that and it would look brand new, and drive it for years than spend $65000 on a new one. Use the $60000 you save and buy a boat, camper, quads. dirt bikes, and whatever to tow behind and have fun.
Also the value of old suburbans are slowly rising. A 1990 suburban in good condition will be worth more 10-15 years later than a 2019 one 10-15 years later
Tommy Tommy *deafBRED* bruh if a 1990s Lexus LS 4.0 L V8 can get 1 million miles, then I bet this beast could probably too. Might take a bit more maintenance and work than a Lexus tho.
@@805NAVE I guarantee it could, the only issue I think this year had was the transmission, but like Jay mentioned it may have already been swapped to a different model trans. Those 350s are dead simple too.
@@DeaFBRED There are more cars with a million on than you might think but not very many people reach that kind of mileage. Few drive that much and maintain their individual car well enough over a 15 - 30 year period.
He mentioned in the video it actually wasn't scrapped. They traded a Nissan Maxima plus some change to get the Suburban, so hopefully someone caring will purchase it.
Up here in PA in the rust belt, that would easily sell for $2500 as clean as it is. Probably more even with those miles. That's nicer than my daily work truck. Lol
@Thystaff Thywill Fluid Film (sheep oil) is a bucket of gold up here. Spray it in the rockers, spray it in the doors, spray it in the quarters, spray it on the backsides of the fenders and all over and inside the frame... Great stuff, just DON'T BREATHE IT.
Not a Chevy fan but it's a darn shame to see the last of the 'real' vehicles being DRIVEN across the scales... I've seen bigger hunks of modern junk still on the road that aren't as clean as that...
Hey that’s cool take good care of it to be honest with you my mother had a 1988 350 motor three-quarter ton suburban along time ago when I was a kid and I still miss it
I know it kills me when they have to go I know my friend had 84 El Camino but it had some issues so he decide to get rid of that one You should try to get the El Camino started it’s pretty sad to leave it there
@@jasonvoorhees6657 f150s are absolutely bull crap the past 20ish years, but Chevy did make an awful interior for their early 2000s trucks, Ford has some pretty nice three quarter ton trucks, and tonners, these days, I hate Chevy's 2020 Silverado and 2020 Blazer and 2020 2500, ugh i hate the redesign, don't even get me started on the new Blazer 😵
With a 700r4 and 10 bolt rear end, if driven like a granny I bet this thing gets close to 22mpg. Shit, my Honda Accord is only getting 18 right now haha
It's Ders Mane not so with a 400/6,6 small block Chevy and the 401 BBC or 396. . These motors need high gear because they have enough power to pull at low rpms. I never had a cooling problem. They had a lot better pulling power and honesty got about the same mpg as a 302/327 small block Chevy. Some put big bastard cams in them then toss on a 750 double barrel holly carb . I liked to find a small 4 barrel from a Plymouth or mercury mid sized merc comet ☄️ being the better . Tune them in about a half a bumb lower then it’s idling then nudge it a little back to TDC slowly and stop short of TDC . Turn it off start it up to hear I’d starter drags if slow ruff rolling over , retard the timing a tiny bit more then try again. I saw a 62 STUD coupe with a 4.2 I6 out of a Trail Blazer. This young guy put a moderate 70 mm turbo on it . He DYNO it with just shy of 500 hp and nearly that much torque. He is running 10.0? At his local strip with it. He claims it gets great mileage. I got a 78 shot bed . The old 250 is shot and the 3 on the tree is loose and worn out. I been thinking about swapping on out in it. A i6 will our lug a big v8!on a long mountain on the highway. It goes slower down the other Side as well. I want something to work that truck in some firewood cutting, and to pull a trailer with . I want to get a 5 speed out of a 3/4 ton truck a 5 speed . Idk about the turbo yet but maybe some day . I also been looking around for a old 2.8 5speed comero or firebird to do a swap in. Whim he kicks in that factory engine on that lark it makes some sweet music. Kinda sounds German turbo ish. Good luck with your wagon

@@TFD1982 But here is the bright side. It's still a car underneath the hood, regaurdless of how many sensors are in there, it's still basically the same thing.... Just complicated as hell. 😂
Jay Smart oh good, you can have Alfred or my first born child! I’m assuming that you still don’t take Discover? NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH Cause I’m BATMAN!!!!!
While I do give every good car the fair chance of having a new owner and life. If they sit around here too long without being rescued eventually they will end up on that big highway in the sky .... it’s sad but it’s true. As a big car guy , I’m ashamed of some of the things I’ve had to crush...
Built back when GM actually made decent cars and trucks. These things would run forever. My grandfather had a late 80s version with the diesel engine in it for as long as I can remember. Id say 15-20 years maybe more.
WOW!!! with all the miles this trucks has on it, not to mention its nearly 30 years old and it virtually is rust free, and the A.C and rear window motor still works, Amazing!!!!
I had three of these. 1989 I bought with 57,000 miles, ex-school bus, which just meant it was yellow. Being in New York it was rusty when I got it - the tailgate had some rot across it and while pulling on the gap to try to see if I could get the window to work, the window broke, and the whole tailgate fell out of it. The rear body brace was shot, rusted just about completely away. So here I am 75 miles from home and I had to go up the hill in the snow and pull barn doors off a parts truck and figure out how to install them so I can go home without all my tools and crap flying out of the back. I figured it out but it wasn't easy, of three layers of metal in the door frame only one has holes for the hinge bolts. I got a good 40,000 miles out of it though, beat the crap out of it, towed in one instance 7500 lbs behind it, drove it until the driver's front rocker panel was totally gone. Then I pulled the motor and trans to go in a '50 Chevy. The replacement for it was like this one, a 1991, it too had some rust but not as bad. It had 159,000 on it when I got it and it was tired, the guy had been using it to tow a big 8600 lb boat. Even then I drove it all over. The TBI 350 will run about forever if you maintain it. That one I only stopped driving because I got a van. The guy who bought it just wanted the interior out of it, the seats, dash, tilt column, power stuff, to go into a pickup. I also had a 1985 with the 6.2 I got cheap with a bad trans, parted out another one for a diesel 700R4, but never put it together. Which, the correct transmission for this is a 700R4. It's worth noting that some of these have a cable driven speedometer output, the 1989 I had did, the 1991 was electronic. The cable type is a tad harder to find, not that you can't swap them over, but when you're putting one in another car it makes things easier. It should get about 15 MPG give or take. I think even with the miles that would sell quick up here just because it has no rust.
@@CowboyCarCrushing makes sense, those COWBOY CADDIES sold alot in their time frame and all the ranchers bought them new loaded, plus climate keeps em from not ruisting.just interiors and paint gets BAKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 1993 Suburban that I bought last year from the original owners. The lady that had it before I did was a teacher and so it mainly just took her back and forth to work. It's in really good condition considering its age and I don't think I'd ever want one of the newer 2005+ models. GM has gone to shit the last few years.
I've had three of them -- all were 2wd -- what the hell does anyone need 4wd for if they don't live on a mountain or where snow comes down in feet?? I assure you, if you can't get around in this with good tires and a full fuel tank, 75% of the others on the road won't be able to, either! Suburbans are the greatest vehicles ever!
Your videos are always so awesome. The background stories of cars you tell always fascinate me. The wit and humor you bring to them makes them funny and well worth watching. As well as the bit of sarcasm you throw in. Keep up the great work. I’ll always be looking forward to the next one. Take care.
Nice old thing, wears the mileage well. If I had it I'd get that bonnet (hood) resprayed, try and source the missing external trim bits and then just drive it. Awesome.
@@UsefulEntertainment yep don't know what's wrong with those dam Texans scrapping classics. I'm a Floridian born and raised. I can guarantee you that we dont do that.....Well mainly because there just aren't that many classics like there are here in Texas.😄
My dad had a 88 suburban and it got stolen in 2002. The fuckers who stolen the suburban ended up in a serious car wreck. The suburban was completely wrecked and one of the people who stole the truck died in the car wreck. My dad later bought a 85 c10 pickup.
Every Jay Smart "scrapped" video ever: - POWER WINDOWS WORK!! - A/C BLOWS COLD!!! My car: - Only one power window works... - A/C doesn't blow period, or heat for that matter... What the hell is wrong with people?! Are they too stupid to realize they have a good car when they scrap them? Most of these would probably sell for $1,000 to SOMEONE!!
The brine is worse then the salt I think. It trashed my original brakes to the point I just had to do new rotors at 36k, it’s sad, even though I do love snow and snowmobiles 😂
I used to rust check my vehicles every year , the oil helped slow down the rust .now I'm in sc where we dont have to worry about rust or state inspections every year .
all those parts work on 73-87 chevy pickup trucks and up to 91 on suburbans and blazers. so if nobody buys it to drive it someone will want the parts. i put those same front bucket seats and center console in my 78 c10 stepside.
Son of a bitch still has some life in her. This is highkey my favorite style of Suburban. Not a Chevy fan as a whole, but I have a lot respect for their older stuff. Newer stuff not so much.
@@jacobmuench6708 alot of politicians came up with it...they are all to blame...it was also an incentive for people to buy new cars to bolster the economy.
The title says it all folks, such a shame here in the auto world today. Let's not let this golden piece of auto history get crushed! Somebody needs to come take this big girl home!
Nahh Jay, keep it stock, I like the way it is. Real Americans prefer the way it came from the factory because *it works!* Looks like we have a potential competitor for the million mile Lexus. A million mile Suburban? Very possible if the new owner takes care of it well. And yesh, what an ugly Walmart stereo, get yourself an 8 track! lol
Since 1990 going off the combined MPG on the window sticker 14mpg, with 338000 miles on it that thing has burned 24,143 gallons of fuel. Between 1990 and now the average fuel cost would be about $1.50. So approximately $36,125 has been spent to drive that thing around....neat!
I wish my great aunt didn't give up her '87 for cash for clunkers, it had extremely low miles, the only reason she destroyed it is because the tires were rotting... Makes no sense to me, she got like $200 bucks for the complete unit, it was a high trim level with a 454ci two tone blue and black, locking diff 4x4, (sigh)
But hey! She got a couple grand off of a brand new throw-away plastic commuter that probably shit its pants before 70k miles and has been long gone now.
That electric rear window on these suburbans is probably the coolest and most memorable feature on these. The most forgettable thing about these suburbans is the gas mileage. LOL.
The electric rear window was problematic, and got stuck when rolling it up. The gas mileage was about 10 to 12 miles to the gallon on the highway as I remember with the 5.7 350 V8. If you chose the 454 V8 gas mileage was even less. Load it down, and pull a trailer, and the gas mileage dropped even more.
@@MXguy95 I'd love to purchase the vehicle, but unfortunately I do not have the sufficient money, also I do live in Kansas which make it seem so far from each other. Thank you for the offer though, I appreciate it!
Went on a family roadtrip in one of those way back in the 80's, was an 86 model kinda like this one not much different. My dad kept calling it a Bus and it felt like one.. Massive amounts of room. That thing is a keeper, that is if you don't mind the fact it's a major fuel pig lol
wowsa, that rig would be a solid 5k here in NE with a quick detail and oil change, leave the paint alone and do a satin clear coat............lucky JAY
