Scrapping a Humidifier - How Much Copper is Inside? - Trash to Treasure - Labor Day Copper Melting

How much copper is inside a humidifier? Join me as I do a complete tear-down to find out. Once everything is scrapped out, I melt the copper, purify it and pour a nice ingot from it. I have a whole pallet full of electronics and appliances that I wanted out of my warehouse from the beginning of the Blue Pallet Series. I'm setting aside all the copper I get from each item in a separate stack so we can see how much copper I had sitting there worth of junk.

Very satisfying to see that scraped down. I was surprised by the amount of copper you got!

Thank you! I admit it was pretty satisfying to see 5 lbs of copper from one item! I nearly doubled the blue pallet stack of copper just from that humidifier! Thanks for watching and your kind words 😁

love the new forge !! .. for larger stators i cut both sides off with the grinder cutter wheel .. then i have a 6 and an 8 inch steel pipe about 2 ft long .. set them on the end and punch through ... almost always happens in a few minutes

hi! on the radiator is very easy to go with a knife to each line and bend easy the aluminium and take out the copper pipes... it took me 12 13 min to open air condition double radiator...
@Scrap2Cast
@Scrap2Cast 2 года назад
Thank you I will definitely try that out on the next one! Thanks for the tip!!! 😁

Next time run a utility knife blade down the center of the copper pipes on the radiator and they just pop right out. Don't cut um all at once cause it turns into a slinky and will be hard to pull out the copper pipes cut on both sides makes it even easier. Less mess. And getting cut.

Thank you very much for the tip! That definitely is the consensus of everyone commenting! 😁 I’ll be tearing into these AC’s on the blue pallet this week and will definitely try that out!!!

i scrapped most of my life and never new there was copper in those compressors to be fair i dont mess with things with refrigerant often
@Scrap2Cast
@Scrap2Cast Год назад
Well now you know 🙂 My feeling is if the refrigerator or air conditioner stops being cold, chances are there was a leak in the system and all the refrigerant is depleted. I always inspect anything with refrigerant before I decide to scrap it out. I look for heavy corrosion buildups on the condenser coils and check to see how rotted those aluminum fins are. I have been fooled before and clipped a line with refrigerant still in it. Most cases I will barely pierce the line and listen for a hissing sound. If there is no hissing sound, I’ll start scrapping it like an animal. If I do hear a hissing sound, I dampen a towel and cover the unit and let it leak out while being covered. Sounds crazy but the towel will absorb the refrigerant. Better than releasing it into the atmosphere like the scrapyard I go to does…

Thanks a bunch man! That was a nice haul of copper! As much as it sucked to do a complete teardown, that ingot was desperately needed for The Blue Pallet Series stack. I nearly doubled the stack with that single humidifier! 🤤😁

Really enjoyed this bud. One thing is you don't work out the value of the metal. That would finish off after seeing how much can be made from these breakdowns. Keep it up bud
@Scrap2Cast

Bro I did a video on how to remove the copper from the fins it's similar to how you did it with the saw. Then I scraped it with a knife though. It works, but sucks. There is no easy way. I don't know if I'm going to do another one...
@Scrap2Cast
@Scrap2Cast 2 года назад
I remember seeing that! Unfortunately I misplaced my razor knife lol. I really should get more organized 🤣. I know what you mean about not wanting to do them. I still have 3 AC’s on the blue pallet that my viewers want to see scrapped out... 😔

Great video! Did you say you put the borax in the crucible before heating the copper?
@Scrap2Cast
@Scrap2Cast 2 года назад
Yes it was a brand new crucible and it needed to be seasoned prior to using it. I heated it on low heat in the furnace for 20 minutes, added borax, heated another 10 minutes, removed the crucible and coated the entire inside with borax. 😁 90 minutes later it cooled down enough where I could load it up with oily compressor wire 🤣
@mattyal9347
@mattyal9347 2 года назад
@@Scrap2Cast my theory and its just a theory is the borax mixed in with the copper rather than draw the impurities. That ingot just didn't have the tell tale ripples that pure copper ingots typically have. The oil was definitely a factor leaving cavities but were it me, id bring that ingot to a boil and see if there's more of that borax to allow to float to the top.
@Scrap2Cast
@Scrap2Cast 2 года назад
@@mattyal9347 I believe you are correct, I also didn't skim the impurities out like I normally do. From my experience, usually they settle to the bottom unless you stir the borax around. I got a little pour happy as the crucible weighs twice as much as I'm accustomed to. At any rate, after the Blue Pallet Series is completed, I'll be melting all the ingots down again anyways. I'll be able to better refine it the 2nd time around 😃
