Scrapping a Steam Cleaner for Copper, Brass and Pouring Them Into Ingots!

How much copper and brass can we get from scrapping a steam cleaner? More than I thought! It was a good unit while it lasted but I already repaired it once and it seems to have given up on being useful so, scrap metal it is!
Wire stripper I use: amzn.to/3sirg18
The motorized stripper: amzn.to/3y0JMuQ
The wire cutters I like: amzn.to/2T6j3OW
This is the cheaper version: amzn.to/2SwrYsB
And here are those grips I recommend: amzn.to/2QCJmYl
(If you make a purchase on amazon through the links above, a small amount of what amazon makes on the sale is shared with me. It's a great way to help support my channel, at no additional cost to you. Even if you buy something other than my tool recommendations!)
Please like/share this video if you enjoyed it, and subscribe to thubprint!

Hi Thub, I have severe ptsd & think its important for you to know that not all of your viewers/subscribers/fans are neither young or scrappers. At 61, I'mprobably one of your oldest fans & I know nothing about scrapping. When my ptsd is at its worst, your calming personality helps more than you can imagine. Been subbed for years now & never miss an episode. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all your hard work & for sharing your adventures with us. 😊😊 from Ontario.

The Copper solidifies because the crucible is colder on the bottom because your losing heat to the air around it- this causes your copper to go below its melting point and become solid again. The better and cheaper option if its available is to get graphite crucibles and put them into a insolated space and run air and Propane into it. The mbmmllc channel has a super simple setup for melting all the metals he has to deal with. I know cost wise it may not be available to you or the stuff needed might not be- but propane is a heck of a lot cheaper than an Acetylene torch.

Here is a scrap hack that can make the copper removal from electric motors much easier. After removing the shroud over the electric motor and being left with the windings fastened snuggly in their slots, what I found after throwing a couple on the camp fire is that the fire will remove all the varnish and thread that holds the copper tightly in place. After cutting the copper it will literally come right out with no pounding. Basically if you have a campfire and sone electric motors to process it does not hurt to throw them in it.

Proud of you for finally bolting that damned vice down to a stump and putting it to use. That wire stripper is starting to make me envious, at first I shrugged it off but now seeing how much use you get out of it, I've changed my mind. On the flip side, seeing you destroy quality switches that each cost more than you get in scrap from the entire machine, hurts my soul. Save your switches, who knows when you'll ever need your switches! Why I must have hundreds now, and any day now I'm sure I'll put one or two of them to good use.
@thubprint
@thubprint 2 года назад
😆🤣 maybe I’ll just message you next time I need a switch! Fair point though, I don’t have a collection of switches and I’ve used them before. That would have been a great one to have available. They aren’t worth smashing so fair enough, I’ll start a bin

@@thubprint I call that "hoarding in place". You hoard the things you want, at someone else's house. It can actually work out quite well. I have a friend who hoards heatsinks. I know he'll never use hardly any of them, so I gave him my stash and I don't need to do that again. Meanwhile, I have small case fans in a box, and he gave me his. We both now have access to a box of heatsinks and case fans for any projects, but each area only hoarding half as much for our "just in case" coverage. Double the hoarding in the same amount of storage space. Just think of all the NEW items I can hoard in the same volume now!

In my experience melting small batch metal samples using science lab equipment everything works better if you use the oxy torch but include a propane Bunsen burner constantly suppling heat from below. Once your small batch of liquid metal more than half fills your crucible the top half of the melt insulates the bottom half if you only heat from above. Been watching for years and glad to see you mixing things up, I do like the Dr. Thub Talks Scrap videos but would like you to sometime break down/include consumable costs (costs of fuel/maintenance for the truck, gas costs for melt work). It really doesn't matter what you do I will keep watching and liking.
@thubprint
@thubprint 2 года назад
Thanks for the tips and feedback! I’ll definitely keep making a variety of vids, but the underside burner is a fantastic idea. Probably cheaper on fuel too. I always intended to do oxy-propane but the best deal on the oxy tank I could find came with the two bottles of acetylene, so here we are lol. I’ve read the propane wins on btus so I’m looking forward to trying that

Did you know that bolting that vise down to something substantial would make it infinitely more useful? If you only have one vise and do not want to lose versatility, use bolts with wing nuts or other quick release fasteners.

Like your wire stripper, mine is manual. Torch is definately hotter than my propane foundry. Good job on the melts. Did you borax the brass? I usually don't melt the small windings due to the excessive smoke from the winding varnish. Yours seemed to do good and I didn't see a lot of smoke.😎⛏⛏🔥🔥
@thubprint
@thubprint 2 года назад
Yep, that was borax I was using on both. I’m not sure if it’s the absolute best thing, but I’ve got the fancy lab grade stuff so it seems to work well. I probably should get a vent hood even so. I agree the little windings aren’t really worth it, but I have incentive to get every little bit in these vids 🙂

I have one of those out in barn that I noticed the mice chewed on the wires the last time I moved it. I was kinda wondering what was inside. I've always took stuff apart to see how it worked or whatever. I've never sold anything to scrap but have been collecting wires and stuff. That thing on the bottom of tank looked like its a safety cut off switch like a dryer has so it don't catch fire or whatever. I've had to replace one before on my dryer

So many questions on this one Buddy? You fluxed the brass, Borax I'm assuming? Do we Flux copper too? And you used an acetylene torch? Is that cost effective? Isn't it cheaper to use a propane refinery?

Oh it isn’t worth it. I just thought it would be cool 😆 I don’t really plan on stacking up a heap of them to sell later, it’s just interesting to have a pile of copper bars with names of what they came from. I felt like melting them into single objects would make a good visual representation of the contents of various items which would work well for RU-vid. Still too early to tell though!
