Screaming TF39s on the C-5 Galaxy

One for the jet engine purists out there! ;)
I was browsing through some older vids in my back catalogue the other day and came across some older footage of C-5Bs and the unique sound of the old TF39. This sound only exists on videos like this now, so it seems like my duty to get this sound back out there, because otherwise it'll be gone forever!
Each of these engines produces around 25 tons of thrust. The uprated CF6 on the C-5M produces 22% more thrust than the old TF39, but is 98% less interesting to listen to in my humble opinion :)
These clips were shot at RAF Fairford in 2012 and 2014 during the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) and during peace-time ops supporting a bomber deployment to the base.
Enjoy the sound of these wonderful engine in full chat.

Since 2018 every C5 Galaxy has been powered by the F138, which is US military designation for the General Electric CF6-80C2 turbofan.
@ejkk9513
@ejkk9513 Год назад
The military isn't interested in engines that howl loudly. They care about range, reliability, usability. In fact, they prefer quieter engines as it is easier to stay incognito. I understand that these engines had a unique sound... but they're dinosaurs and their usability had run dry. The CF6 is a much better engine.

Just saw this, outstanding footage! I flew in one from Yokota to Travis (SF) as a kid; there's a passenger cabin on the upper deck and military folk could get tickets for really cheap for themselves and their families. We entered into the lower deck which was like a cavern, then climbed up the stairs. The passenger cabin had one or two windows in the emergency doors and the seats all faced back. We had to put earplugs on at takeoff. The "flight attendants" were two guys in fatigues, I remember the intercom went out so one of the guys was shouting out the food service announcement. Fun memories.

When I was a C-5 mission planner at Dover I was also in charge of sending Fred to air shows. I got to send one to my home town one year and I got to go home. We did a standing TRT takeoff when we left, and did a few passes around the city on our way out. I remember the light fixture in the crew compartment crashing down as the AC yanked and banked us around the city. My parents drove me to the airport and were watching us depart. I was laughing the entire time as I knew my mother was scared to death watching us do what we did. Sure enough when I got back to Dover I called to let them know I made it back, my mother was still spinning like a top. She probably would have had an aneurism if she was on Fred with me! Lol…

@@UKAviationMovies: It WAS a long flight but the box lunch (white cardboard box containing one mystery meat sandwich, an apple, a candy bar and some milk) and a good book helped pass the time. So did a pit stop in Alaska, but it was seriously cold there and my summer tan 1505 uniform just didn't cut it. After we landed in Charleston and I boarded a commercial DC-9, the Galaxy taxied past my window. It blocked out the sun. Oh.....I almost forgot the part where we had to wait for 6 hours in the Yokota Terminal while the C-5A's wing spars were checked for fatigue cracks. But overall, a pretty good experience.

I grew up in Marietta, Ga. near the Lockheed Corporation and Dobbins AFB where the original C5-a was developed. As a small boy in the late 60's and early 70's I stood and looked straight up as the prototypes flew their first flights, along with several escort planes and observation planes that flew alongside. Those older generation engines as far as the sound was nothing short of amazing. They originally replaced those old engines with newer variants, which I understand are much quieter now.

Actually theres a few reasons why the TF-39 engines had a very unique sound. The front fan is actually more like a half stage, with a small fan in the middle and stationary guide vanes surrounding it to propel the air towards the second fan behind it. With a bypass ratio of 8:1 you would think that it would be a lot quieter, but with it being the very first high bypass engine, they hadn't quite figured out how to mix the bypass air and hot gasses coming from the core like they do now to dampen the noise. Plus nacelle designs are much different now. On the CF-6 engines that were born from the TF-39 the first generations had that stage an a half design, but the "half" stage was put behind the fan in the front, which helped with the noise a little better. The reason you hear the buzz saw sound from the engines at full throttle is because the tips of the fan blades are moving at super sonic speed.

TF-39 is the Original Engine. PW copied all the secrets, leaving behind the N1 Fan, thus, ending up with JT-9D.
