RIP the two members of Screaming Trees Mark Lanegan (November 25, 1964 - February 22, 2022), aged 57 Van Conner (March 17, 1967 - January 17, 2023), aged 55 You both will be remembered as legends.
Not underrated....they self destructively destroyed their own career with in fighting and on stage meltdowns.....they had the world's ear....and they blew it under a fog of self doubt and the stereotypes of rock and roll....the drinks and drugs cloud judgement...and ruin your life. Could have been one of the greats...now a grunge footnote or also ran.....too bad too...great music.
Rest In Peace Mark Lanegan. The first time I listened to this song I was totally bewitched and had to listened to all the rest, what a beautiful voice and what a profound artist. Thank you for your beautiful music.
Screaming Trees has to be the most underrated band of the grunge era. Don’t get me wrong I love me some AIC and some Soundgarden and Pearl Jam but these guys kick ass.
This band is one of the most underrated ones of the history. Lanegan’s voice is so deep, so rich and the songs are so well done… They weren’t as popular and I don’t know whether it’s positive or negative, but hope their songs remain as appreciated (or more) through the ages. Mark Lanegan will be missed af!
Rest in peace Mr. Lanegan, thank you very much for your art, and for your words. You are one of my most favorite vocalists, thank you. I will greatly miss you sir.
@@sliverhandsonbasses I saw many of these bands in Seattle in the 90s, and the best drummers Iever heard live were Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Mad Season) and Mike Musburger (The Posies, Fastbacks). I never saw Grohl or Abbruzzese live.
Señor Archicadio yeah but got their notoriety while in Seattle . They did start in ellensburg but moved to Seattle and got lumped into the Seattle sound. That’s like calling nirvana an Aberdeen band
Goodbye Mark. You enriched our lives with the music you sang on. As we get older, 'tis hard to see people we listen to die. Especially when they are about our age
I want to say it's been 20 years since I've heard this song. Truly a strange feeling. Starting to understand that getting old means you get to hear about all your heroes dying. Sad. ♥️
Hell yeah! Look at Van Conner tearing it up. This is the perfect start to this perfect album, their best, IMHO. They took their musical prowess and matched it with ambitious compositions, complex arrangements, psyche influences and flawless production. Sweet Oblivion is a monument of an album.
As much as I love Sweet Oblivion, I do love Dust more for it's more forward thinking approach. It's more adventurous and still this psychedelia garage sound with more influences.
It's a beautiful album as well. I gues it comes down to personal preference. If it didn't have as many slow songs as it does, maybe it would be my favorite too.
The hour is ending, can't you see There is no way now, to get free In the shadow of the season Without a reason, to carry on Without a reason, without a reason And from the north woods Down to the valley In a world of hurting, I'm moving on And from the lighthouse Out on the ocean Can't climb the mountain, so very tall Said Lord please give me what I need He said there's pain and misery Oh sweet oblivion feels alright The hour is drawing ever closer And rolling over, won't let me be In the shadow of the season To find a reason, to carry on Said Lord please give me what I need He said there's pain and misery Oh sweet oblivion She calls me onward to her side And feels her song deep inside And find a reason In the shadow of the season To find a reason to carry on In the shadow of the season To find a reason to carry on Find a reason to carry on To carry on To find a reason to carry on
Totally agree man! Layne and Mark are vocal gods! You may have heard of them, but you should check out the band Mad Season, which has Layne on most songs, but Mark is in a couple such as their song Long Gone Day.
I'll never forget the Trees.......''Oh Sweet Oblivion'' So many ignorant people out there, see that I am not alone. When I was a child I didn't understand what this song meant, just simply loved it!
I used to live in NYC and in the '90s we would go see these guys in small bars in New Jersey. I gotta tell you, they put on a great show and sound EXACTLY like this live........Legend indeed!!
I watched this old doc on the muscle shoals studio musicians and one of the guys from it said that you can usually here the environment where the artist grew up in through their music . He was talking about the down south country fried rock/ blues but that man was exactly right . Having grew up in WA state this song is very symbolic of the moderate/Rainy/ chilly environment for which the trees come from . And yes I know they cane from eastern Wa
Lanegan is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. If Morrison started his career in the 90s this is what he would sound like. Not taking anything away for Lanegan but there's defiantly similarities.
Josh Buckley That's what I just was thinking! The Doors missed out on this one ! When they were calling on all the other singers to cover Jims songs! Such as Ian Astberry, Scott Weiland, Eddie Vedder! Mark would have been dead on ! Sounding like him , looking kinda like him ! They really shouldve Had Mark singing doing his songs !
There are three rock singers post-Morrison who I always associate with Jim Morrison - Ian Curtis (Joy Division), Ian Astbury (The Cult), and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, solo, etc.). Lanegan probably had the best voice of the three, and IMO the best voice of any of the "grunge" or early 1990s "Seattle scene" singers, including Chris Cornell (who himself had an amazing voice).
I got this album back in 93..wore the CD out playing it again and again..perfect blend of power and subtlety, great songs and fantastic musicians, I burned a copy for a mate and he loved it too. I mean...who the fuck wouldn't!!
Absolut geil. Bin so happy, dass ich die Band ,als Grungefan, nach so langer Zeit entdeckt habe. WOW !!!! I LOVE IT

The moment I heard Mark Lanegan on QOTSA I thought. "WTF IS GOING ON WHY DID I NEVER LISTEN TO THIS VOICE BEFORE" Then I listened to Nearly Lost You, and never came back. Screaming Trees is fucking awesome and I still can't understand how this is not the recognizable soundtrack of the whole fucking 90's
I was living in Seattle during the early years of Grunge...very exciting time. There was electricity/energy in the air, and darkness blanketed the Emerald City when Kurt Cobain died.
Long live Lanegan🤘🙌🤘 may your voice never be silent! Until next time brother, thanks for everything! Such a badass rocker...one of the best ever in my book. forever a legend!
I just found out about Mark passing away just now. He was a fantastic singer, one of my favs. Of all the music from Seattle (I lived there during The Grunge Years!) The Screaming Trees songs are the ones I sing of around the house. COVID-19 SUCKS
When I saw them open for Soul Asylum and Spin Doctors in the 90s they opened with this song.. Blew me away.. I saw them at Carowinds amusement park in Charlotte, NC.. It was called the Alternative Nations tour I believe..
Cara se você não fala eu não iria saber tão cedo que ele morreu , na minha opinião era o melhor vocalista de grunge eu tinha na época o vinil Sweet abolivion screaming trees
Mark Lanegan my favorite singer. I loved his imperfect, rustic voice. I'm so devastated. His story has gotten me through hard times. Screaming trees came on the scene for me in early 90s. A guy at a record shop turned me on to them. I've been obsessed since. Never get tired of them
Screaming Trees não foram tão badalados quantos os outros Nirvana e Sound Garden ,sua mistura de psicodelia com a agressividade do som da época faz deles únicos ,grande banda.Long Live Rock'n'Roll.
Really well put. I love Screaming Trees and have always wondered how the hell they didn't make it huge. Such a voice along with great lyrics and a unique sound. Soooo good.
I remember, the first time I heard, Screaming Trees, was on a cassette tape. I don't remember, the name of the name of the song, I heard??? Just know, since that time, I've been a Screaming Trees, fan. I still do, listen to there sings, from, the early 90's.
