Fantastic video, Ade. What looks like a really complex process initially, you've explained brilliantly. 👍🏻

so i just picked up one of these a few days ago and compared to that poor lathe this one is so clean, I'm working on getting the lathe to running condition then ill do a restoration on it when it produces some chips

I finally screwed my courage to the sticking place and cut my first thread yesterday. These videos helped me get there. Thanks once again, Ade, for making these useful videos.

Terrific, Ade. More on setting the cross slide and tool! Now I have to figure out the proper gearing for cutting 1/2 x 28 on my mini lathe. Keeps my mind engaged.

Hi Ade, thanks for the video! I have recently acquired a Myford ML10 (smaller version of the ML7). I'm hoping that your instructional videos will apply to my lathe as well.

Hi Ade, excellent video, do you set a stop for the carriage for the start point of each pass of the tool ?
@AdeSwash
@AdeSwash 3 года назад
Hi Jeff, I use the thread dial indicator, and engage the half nuts on the appropriate dial position, so the start point can be anywhere before the thread, as the indicator will pick up the thread

Hi Ade, I have watched part 1 video with great care and have tried to set up the 27.5 degree angle but find that the centre line mark on the cross slide coincides with the corner of the swivel block, which makes it impossible for the gauge you use, to fit. Can I send you a /email you a picture of my set up in case Myford produced a slightly different cross slide but having said that, both yours and mine look to be the same.Your advice will be appreciated,Thankyou,Jim
@AdeSwash
@AdeSwash 6 лет назад
Hi Jim, thanks for your comment, I have realised I made a small mistake on setting over the top slide with this method, as this gives an advance angle of 35° rather than the 27.5° I guess I got my axes mixed up! I now use a protractor for setting, and set up using the front of the topslide mount against the side edge of the cross-slide set at 62.5° which is much easier to achive and give the correct 27.5° offset. I will make a new video explaining it a bit clearer and link it to the error in this video asap. Incidentally the error isnt particularly detrimental to the actual cutting of the thread, as the cutter remains purpendicular, it is just the advance of the tooling which is 7.5° degrees out of kilter - sorry for the confusion! Ade

Hi again Jim, I have created a new video which will hopefully explain a better and accurate way to set over the cross-slide - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FE-Rw2JMZKc.html Cannot see any attached pic but that may be just me! Best Regards. Ade

Can I ask why we set the topside angle to 27.5 degrees. If you left it on zero degrees would thread not cut?
@AdeSwash
@AdeSwash 4 года назад
Hi Philip, you set the compound to half the thread angle (27.5 degrees for a whitworth 55 degree thread, 30 degrees for a metric 60 degree thread) and use the compound to advance the tool (the tool is still setup at 90 degrees to the lathe axis), the theory being is that you are then only using one cutting edge of the tool as it is advanced by the compound, so the strain is less and the resulting thread easier to cut, reducing tool loading also gives a better finish. On a light thread this is less important and it can be left at zero degrees, but it helps on a deeper thread. Regards. Ade

what change wheels do you need
@AdeSwash
@AdeSwash 7 лет назад
Hi Nathan, it depends upon what thread you need to turn determines which change gears are used
@kevinmartin7760
@kevinmartin7760 3 года назад
I thought the topslide angle setup semed wrong. If you just imagine cutting a very narrow-angle threadform it becomes more obvious. If you want to use one of those fishtail gauges to do this, I think you have to point the gauge to the left and adjust so the gauge body is parallel to the bed with one of the sides of the point against the back of the topslide.
