Undue guilt is a huge obstacle we can put between ourselves and God. When it comes to our forgiveness (and ultimately salvation), we must trust in His grace.

Healing Scrupulosity Course by Adam available at adamcrossmft.com
This course builds real tools to take steps towards understanding and healing scrupulosity from a Catholic perspective. Religious scrupulosity is based in anxiety and obsessive compulsive patterns. Christ tells us to be not afraid and calls us to live life to its fullest each and every day. So what does this look like when we are struggling with intrusive and critical thoughts?
This 7 video course dives into how to make sense of scrupulosity and intrusive thoughts and builds an understanding of its origins and the impact it has on living out our Catholic faith. It provides practical tools in each session to help with intrusive thoughts and religious scrupulosity.

May God bless y’all prayers out for y’all. For all also struggling with scrupulosity, let’s have more faith in God. Trust in Him, may we trust in God. We humbly pray and wish all of this through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior’s Holy Name, Amen.

Thanks for the video, confession is something I struggle with especially the build up beforehand and then afterwards, because there's always something that pops into my head after that keeps me from receiving Communion.

Oh gosh I’m going through this right now. I’ve confessed my sins before but realized recently that many of them were committed in front of my kids so I have to reconfess

I really needed this. I was at confession 3 weeks ago and right after I realized that I totally forgot to confess one thing. I’ve been beating myself up about it ever since then and my scrups have been making me worried about hell& not receiving our Lord. Tomorrow’s Easter and after watching this I think I’m going to receive the Eucharist.

That is great to hear! I have heard priests advice that when in doubt (with situations like you have described) receive the Lord and trust in His mercy over your doubts in the Sacrament.

Adam: I want to tell you how unbelievably helpful and comforting this video was in my current state of life. I have been so tormented and sick at heart over these issues for the past year when I returned to the faith and the sacraments. No priest in the past 365 days or more has been able to help me to understand my struggle, which has at times brought me to utter despondency. How do I thank you sufficiently?! May God bring you innumerable blessings! Thank you!!!!!

If you've confessed and you've forgotten a serious sin, it's forgiven in that confession. Just confess it the next time you go.

Hi Adam. I just listen to this again and it again scared me and i we as making progress I got triggered again by it and my own mention of imperfect contrition and being afraid of hell and all the other things I mentioned which were fading now came back. I guess. But I have to forge ahead and like you say believe God wants to heal us. I have been struggling with this for a year now and I would like to get to confession and Communion this Christmas.

🙏So good. Not sure if I am scrupulous...beginning to think I am. I put off going to confession because I worry if something is a sin or not.

I can't receive the sacrament, I'm not baptized or Catholic yet. I've wanted it since last easter but I was too late for RCIA and they said I had to wait a year. I'm almost there, I need the sacraments like water. I have been struggling with certain sins, and I know how good and forgiving the Lord is, but it's been hard to hear the Lords forgiveness in a concrete way. He has used videos like this to reassure me. Thanks!

THANK YOU! This may be the resource that I need to examine more closely!! One huge question that I have is how do we deal with guilt related to things that the church says is a sin, but we just can't understand the reasoning behind? Example...dating after a divorce when you had no way to keep the marriage together?(marriage essentially abandoned) Or numerous other topics such as premarital sex in loving relationships, homosexual couple, etc.... This is especially difficult when different groups (such as congregational churches) have conflicting views.
@TheCatholicTherapist
@TheCatholicTherapist 2 года назад
For sure, I often find it helpful to really look at what the Church teaches on those hard topics. Often we can hear what society THINKS the Church teaches but the Church provides clear, loving answers. At the center of the "rules" is a relationship with the person of Christ. We can't separate those out. Our Church has 2000 years of answers to just about every moral question based on reason and who God is. Hope this helps!

thank you for this, i just went to confession and i know that i said those mortal sins but deep in my heart i still am bothered if i said it or not, or if i am forgiven or not

I think it helps to remember that absolution is not a feeling but a matter of truth in what Jesus does for us. There may still be some underlying fears and lies about being forgiven that it helps to talk through with a therapist and/or a spiritual director. God bless!

Much appreciated I think for us it would be good for some of us maybe all of us who struggle with scrupulosity such as myself if you could really delve into what is actually considered mortal sin versus venial sins not just the context of it being grave and you knowing you were doing wrong. but for instance a lie is a sin , now if someone lies to save someone else’s life is an extreme example “I know” does that still considered a sin or a do you understand what I mean?
@jacqueschauvin1398

One thing you mentioned triggered my fear when you said if you are confessing just cause you don’t want to go to hell then it’s not good. Some of us are being hounded with thoughts of that our contrition or remorse is not perfect and it can cause us to think we are never going to be forgiven and makes us despair that we just aren’t going to make a good confession and receive the Eucharist which Christ said we need to have Life. I am the only one who has experienced this and does the evil one bombard our mind with theses thoughts to cause us and despair?
@TheCatholicTherapist
@TheCatholicTherapist Год назад
The devil absolutely wants to lead you to despair. With scrupulosity it is easy to get caught up in your own "stuff" and to forget to look at God's overwhelming mercy. It really helps in times of obsessive thoughts to stay present and be grounded in reality and to remind yourself of the mercy of God. At the same time it is important to intentionally seek out healing to understand your broken God-images that make it hard to believe that there is hope in mercy. This involves identifying what has shaped your expectations of God, self, and love.

@TheCatholicTherapist. Thanks for your response Adam. I appreciate you taking the time to encourage me to focus on Jesus. I don’t understand why I am experiencing this but I am trying to trust that God understands and I offer it up

Ohh I didn't know that we were supposed to confess to the same priest.... I thought we just confess to whoever is available. (I don't suffer from scrupulosity, I came here from another video on confession and scrupulosity was mentioned so I looked it up)

It's definitely okay to go to different priests. For those struggling with scrupulosity it helps to have consistency but I also know it can be hard to find a priest to consistently meet with!
