Such a great show. I mean just look at the talent they had: Joe Flaherty, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis. I mean wow, just an obscene abundance of talent. Each of them are legends in their own right. Great, great show.
Saturday Night Live skits felt stale and dated in comparison to the creativity you saw on SCTV. When Kids in the Hall cam onboard it was clear there is something in the water producing stellar Canadian talent.
Rest in Peace and Love Joe Flatley! You and the entire SCTV rocked my world back in the day and still do crack me up! Count Floyd thanks for all the Laughs! ❤🎉😂🤣😂🙏🏻
Oh my god...Joe Flaherty playing Count Floyd is so brilliant. His constant failure and then reliance on howling and hiding behind his cape - just amazing. I watched this as pre-teen and it absolutely shaped everything about what I wanted to do with comedy. Looking back - its Eugene Levy that I am just astounded by. Every character he created was so strong - and SO many of them.
I watched an interview with a very young Tom Hanks on the set of Splash talking about whether or not he was afraid of the diving scenes, etc. He said no, but he was terrified of working with Candy and Levy. He said they were so good they could “blow me off the screen…with next to no effort”.
@@va3svd When your only claim to fame is co-starring on a show like Bosom Buddies, you could easily be blown away by anyone. But with Candy and Levy, you'd be obliterated. 😆
@@QuadMochaMatti Yeah, but even so young and green he was still Tom Hanks. And the SCTV guys were still young, too. I just thought that offhand comment was such a great tribute to their talent, considering the source.
It perfectly captures the way Castle movies (and others) would employ these novelties, offered with the promise of enhancing the movie-going experience, in the lamest possible way.
I think maybe the most brilliant thing the SCTV gang did was to often portray characters that in turn are playing other characters. For instance, Woody Tobias Jr. who plays "Bruno", Count Floyd is a character played by Floyd Robertson, etc.
When I was a kid every local station had a Late Show hosted by a vampire, usually a member of the local stations broadcast staff. I love how they took that concept and made intrepid anchorman Floyd Robertson be "Count Floyd"...lol...he was always trying to sell those 3-d glasses, and over time the price kept going up...this time it was "26 bucks", almost like he wasn't sure if he could maybe get away with a higher price! Hilarious!
Wow, as a native Western Washingtonian, I can't believe I wasn't even aware of that. Likely because I was far more into what was happening over across the pond during that time.
SCTV brought a new era of comedy; instead of memorizing simple one liners, comedians now created full characters and personalities for their act. It was beautiful. Then, Kids in the Hall came out.
To be fair, SCTV (by the time it was in their sixth season) no longer had most of their cast and had moved to Cinemax. The episodes were good, but you knew it was over. So, unlike Saturday Night Live, SCTV knew when to end.
I grew up watching SCTV. I’m 43 now, and for the first time I realize that Candy seems to be doing a sort of Vincent Price impression. Is it just me or was that his intent? 😂❤️
I'm your waiter Woody Tobias Jr. you probably recognize me as Bruno in the Dr. Tongue film series. This was one of Eugene Levy,s favorite characters opposite John Candy he said. I am busting a gut watching these, when i was young and these were coming on at night i would run home to watch SCTV.Thanks for the video.
The most remarkable thing about this, watching it so many decades later, is the pacing and length of the bits. They weren't afraid of taking their time and letting a joke build.
Bruno used some diner lingo that I recognized: * Adam and Eve on a Raft - Two poached eggs on toast. * Cackle fruit - Eggs * Run it through the Garden - Add all the condiments. I can't identify the other diner lingo he mentioned.
SCTV Trivia: Count Floyd is of course news anchor Floyd Robertson. He and his sidekick Earl Camembert are parodies of real-life Canadian news readers Lloyd Robertson and Earl Cameron
It's hard to believe they made such memorable characters and bits on such a low budget. That's what happens when you get a bunch of legends together and let them do their thing.
Why yes, signing the guest book at the 3D house of beef is the main reason I came here Dr. Tongue...I always look forward to it. I really miss John. Love SCTV, thanks for the upload. Classic, Catherine O'Hare with a mustache LOL
Sorry i am double dipping, But the funniest line in the show is when James Ingram comes out of the cooler and Eugene Levy said to him,,If you think it was cold in that cooler, wait till you get on Stage. Too Funny.Love it.
@charles Middleton SCTV came on during the 80s and 90s and was based in Canada. It developed a cult following here in the U.S., and was set around a fictional tv network. Much like SNL, virtually all of the players went on to successful careers in both film and series tv. In fact, SCTV in most areas was shown after SNL, so popular that at one point, SCTV beat SNL in the ratings, as SCTV managed to keep stuff fresh, and the cast was genuinely funny, so no one person carried the show.
In Chicoutimi, SCTV test marketed the stereo version of 'House of Real Cheetos' with Orson Welles, Luciano Pavarotti and Johnny LaRue as co-anchors and Edna Boil as an on stage budgie girl chanteuse....
@A Free Zaphorogian Cossack...I LOVED James Ingrams 'Just Once'. You can still see his complete performance on the DVD...SCTV vol. 2....Disc 3 (episode 93 - The Godfather segment)...I just watched it!!❤
Wasn't there an episode in SCTV where John Candy offered some type of "Smell'o'vision" where they had some type of canister that would let you smell what was going on in the scene? I was so young when I saw some of these, I don't remember much!
I was watching another RU-vid channel where a pair of twin comedians went to Arby's to try a venison sandwich, and one of them said "Arby's is the house of protein", and THAT made me think of THIS, the 3D House of Beef!😂
I so want to attend this fall's Monster Bash/Monster Con in Pittsburgh (not West Mifflin, heh-heh) to see Joe Flaherty (Count Floyd) in person. We shall see...
I loved me some SCTV and lived to see Count Floyd. But let's face it Monster Chiller Horror Theater wouldn't be what it was if it didn't have Bruno. He was their Charlie Watts.
It was a promo sketch of Monster Chiller Horror Theatre on Season 5. Count Floyd pitching the "miracle of Smell-O-Rama". It was for "Dr. Tongue's 3-D House of SlaveChicks". I'm guessing by now they have that sketch featured on YT as-well.
