Are you ready to sail to Mysterious Island in search of the deadly GIANT CRAB? We’re kicking off the new year with a brand new mug in the form of a crab claw - what better way to celebrate 2022 than to sip from the pincer of an enormous crustacean?
During the adventure I’ll build armatures, prep clay, share my sculpting process, and show several smoothing techniques to use with Monster Clay.
As always, put your questions in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them. In addition to liking and subscribing, please TELL A FRIEND! Share a link with a buddy if you think they may enjoy the video. Thank you so much for watching!

I'm a wood worker by trade. I make tea trays, tables and various other tea related items. I've ALWAYS wanted to design and create my own teapots but am NOT a potter, nor do I really want to go the pottery wheel route. I kind of just stumbled into the idea of a slipcast teapot when a friend gave me a VERY rough slipcast pot from India. It reads as a bad children's tea set BUT it inspired me to pursue making slipcast pots and your channel has been SUCH and inspiration! And you're in Oregon! So close. Love the work youre doing and your open, eager, organized approach. It very much propels my dreams and desire to create my own teaware designs and share them with the world! Cheers! I raise a cup to you good sir.

Cheers and thank you! I have the same feelings as you about the pottery wheel - I love what people make with them, but the tool just didn’t grab me. I hand built my mugs for years before getting the courage to attempt slipcasting. Best of luck with your teapots - I’m certain they will be great!

In this day of CAD and 3-D printers, it's a nice change to watch someone create something like this from scratch using their hands.

Thank you! I have nothing against digital sculpting and 3D printing. They are just different tools. I remember being scorned in college by classmates when stone carving for using pneumatic tools - as if it was more “pure” to only use hand tools for carving. I feel if I jumped in a time machine and gave Michelangelo a pneumatic chisel he’d be overjoyed! 😄 In the end, it’s all about the form and the design - bad sculpture can be made in either clay or on the computer. For me the draw to digital is the ability to rapidly re-scale your work. For example, it would be a HUGE effort to make my clay claw 10% bigger - but it is a click of a button on the computer. The Makeup Effects pioneer Rick Baker is sharing some incredible personal work on Instagram, where he will sculpt pieces in clay, scan the forms, then modify on the computer. It’s exciting stuff!

I think it was the PreCambrian where Crabs got HUGE, like 20 feet across. Pretty sure it was the inspiration for the giant crab in a lot of scifi stories. All I'm thinking of, is my childhood on the Gulf Coast and eating crab claws, endless baskets of crab claws.

This came out amazing!!! Fantastic work!! When you have the camera mounted on your turntable in the stop motion, it can get pretty nauseating with everything in the background moving so much. Maybe a clean background would work better? Or sticking to static camera Timelapses might be good? I also am very motion sensitive and get nauseous easily so that may just be a “me” problem lol. Beautiful work, I can’t wait to see the finished mugs!!
@vantikistudio

Sorry for the motion sickness! I liked the turntable mount as it kept the sculpture static - otherwise it is spinning when I do locked off Timelapse shots.

very happy to have discovered your channel, I have been making slipcast porcelain vases and have struggled to find the right material for my prototypes. I just ordered some Monster Clay and then your channel popped up. The ceramic studio I've been working out of encouraged soft clay prototypes which are too fragile for 6 part molds which a lot of my vases require. I'm hopeful the wax based clay will be the right fit and allow me to make better molds as I too hope to offer my work in limited editions.

I’m so glad you found my channel! Best of luck with the clay - it is very temperature dependent so keep your studio temperature in mind when selecting the firmness of the clay

I saw on a video about a plaster supply problem , as a retired dental technician and purchasing agent I just wanted to know if you use Georgia Pacific plasters? Check your specs against their dental plasters and see if any of them might do. The expansion was within pottery plaster specs but the set times were a bit different . I spent years using fast set plaster in a much dryer mix to mount things quickly in small batches , it's very interesting to see such a liquid form with such a long set time. Love the show as a feeder of squirrels I love your fountain for our outdoor friends.
@vantikistudio
@vantikistudio 2 года назад
Aloha! We used several dental gypsum mixes back when I was a special effects artist. Most are very dense - while they are wonderfully strong and have almost no shrinking/expansion, the density makes them not the best for slipcasting. It’s the porosity of the pottery plaster that wicks the water out of the slip. Thank you for feeding the squirrels!

@@craft-o-matic2377 it can be tricky to make a plaster mold of a baked polymer clay sculpture. You need to be VERY careful about avoiding undercuts, and be sure to release the clay very well to keep it from sticking to the plaster. Hope to have some videos up in the next few weeks! 🤞

What can one do,with a finished piece…is it permanent or do you have to make a cast….can it be painted?
@vantikistudio
@vantikistudio 6 месяцев назад
The master model is sculpted from a wax based clay. It will never dry out or harden and can’t be painted. I keep some of my old sculptures on a shelf where they collect dust - but you really need to make a mold of them and cast the piece in a rigid material if you plan on painting it.

is monster clay a lot better than sculpey clay?
@vantikistudio
@vantikistudio 11 месяцев назад
I only use Sculpey and Super Sculpey if I’m going to bake the piece after sculpting it, or if I’m doing a smaller piece. For me It’s expensive to use polymer clay for larger pieces. I’m n the end though, there is no “right” clay - if you like it and enjoy working with it, got for it! 🙂
