I can't think of any academic study in specific, although I'm sure some are out there. I just don't know of them. But I would think that most biographies of Michalangelo should have a few pages dedicated to that. If I recall correctly, The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone talks about his relationship with Neoplatonism.
