Scutariella Japonica is a flat worm shrimp parasite. Despite not adding any new livestock or plants in over 2 years, and no new shrimp in over 3 years to any of my tanks I have discovered a that one of my shrimp tanks has it.

The shrimp I got from you late last year are doing well. Still breeding and healthy as ever. Haven't noticed anything like this one them, but I am always keeping an eye on them.

I searched and searched all my tanks for hours and saw no signs of it anywhere else. And the tank I found it in was just a handful of shrimp, even then it really isn't something to worry about all that much, only causes problems if it reaches infestation levels, and its super easy to get rid of according to everything I've researched on it. Glad to hear your shrimp are doing good.

Sorry about the scutariella, but look like you are on the right path, wish you the best of luck with dealing with it. Never have it myself, but good you know your treatment.

I have had 1000s of shrimp for years, and first time I've had any issue like this, the thing that stumps me is just now seeing them and I haven't added any shrimp in over 3 years, no live stock or plants in 2 years. Had to be there this whole time and conditions in this tank just got to where they like it. When first discovered I panicked and just about had a heart attack. But after reaearching they're actually pretty harmless unless it reaches infestation levels and easy to get rid of. So I'm not too worried now, but yesterday was stressful for sure lol.

Can show up outa no where, I’m convinced most of these critters are in our water supply. Fenbendazole worked well for me. Did 3 treatments over a week and a half

Thanks for that info man, I was about to lose my mind worrying how I got it in first place. Guess with it being a flatworm like planaria, makes since that it can just show up like planaria. When I first noticed it, your fenbendazole video was one of the ones I came across in doing my research on how to get rid of it 😀 Found it on Sunday, did salt dips Sunday and Monday. Dosed fenbendazole Sunday and Tuesday. By Wednesday (yesterday) I saw no noticeable signs of it. According to what I've found it seems praziquantel is effective as well, and so I got some prazipro that I plan to dose to treat the eggs that might still hatch. Probably do a dose of that every other week for a month or 2. From my past experiences prazi pro is totally shrimp safe, while I know fenbendazole is fine for 2 or 3 doses, but is devastating to shrimp colonies after repeated doses. Lessons learned from keeping guppies and shrimp together while battling guppy internal parasites. So scared to get crazy with fenbendazole and shrimp. Thanks again 👍😀👍

It will be interesting to see how the meds work. Surprised with all the deworming stuff you have tried in the past that anything would have been in your tank for a long time but keep us updated

Yeah, at a loss for words on how it showed up. The good thing is that its not supposed to be a big deal and is pretty much harmless unless it reaches infestation levels. Only found it on a handful of shrimp in the one tank after searching for hours. Im sure it will be taken care of without any problems from what I have read.

Thank you Mark. Still stumped as to how it ended up in my tank. Had to have been in there for years and just not bad enough to notice, must just be conditions were right for them in this tank and they got bad enough to be noticed. Relieved that they are pretty much harmless, just ugly. Thanks again bud.

Thanks, man. All signs of it were gone 4 or 5 days after I made the video, thank god. I will make a follow-up video when I'm positive it's gone and not coming back soon. I also took preventive actions in all the shrimp tanks, just in case. Salt dips, fenbendazole, and praziquantel are all involved, lol. Basically salt dips on visibly infected shrimp, fenbendazole for the one tank I knew that was infected, then prazi pro a few times over the next month or so to kills eggs that hatch and as a preventive measure.

I just hate this little buggers, bought some shrimp to add to my community like more than a year ago and I dip the shrimp and take the molts I can see but still find some of those things to this day from time to time on my shrimp :( very hard to get rid of in my experience but the salt dips just like 10 to 20 seconds get rid of those things at least for a while.

Have you tried fenbendazole or something like praziquantel? From what I've read they are a flatworm just like planaria and fenbendazole wipes them out. Everything I have read says fenbendazole will knock it out. I guess we'll see if the combination of salt dipping the worst ones and treating tank gets the job done in this tank, I hope so.

@@MarkShellyAquatics I did try that but only when I first saw them and actually got a few weeks without seeing any but after that they came back and from then I didn't want to dose the tank again cause I just didn't want to take the risk of killing everything, but hopefully you get rid of them! I'll be following your progress and see if I get the courage to try again :)

Hate to hear you've had such a hard time with it, has me worried. Seems like the eggs are pretty much impervious to anything you can throw at it. I have read prazipro is supposed to be effective against it it, and I've put that in tanks with shrimp more times than I can count in guppy tanks that have shrimp, and it was 100% shrimp safe in my experience. Maybe salt dips on ones I see, fenbendazole to kill all the ones I can't catch or miss, then perhaps try praziquantel a couple times over the next month or 2 because I know you dont really wanna do repeated doses of fenbendazole. That will be my tentative game plan i do believe.

Thank you for that information 🙏 😊 Been going crazy trying to figure out where it came from. Was pretty panicked at first. The more research I did on it the better I felt about. Yes i was panic to but they arrent a big deal I was also doubting if it was vorticella or scutariella japonica becauce vorticella is a protozoa and not a flatworm they look the same only different is colour and with vorticella you have more crawlers on the shrimp and they can also appear on gravel and plants

I bought some home bred neos from a local. I didn't catch it until later when buying them that they had Scutariella Japonica. Only a few had them with maybe 2 or 3 on their heads. Mine hasn't gone out of control. I have just been salt dipping as soon as I find them on a shrimp. I should really separate the effected ones due to possible egg deposits and removal of the molts for 3 weeks.

Back when I made this video I was pretty freaked out because I couldn't figure how or why I got it. It really is more of an annoyance, but should be taken care of. Sure fire way to get rid of it is a round of fenbendazole treatments. Consists of 3 treatments spread out over a week between water changes. Just 1 round destroys it. It is a bit hard on the shrimp, but notnroo bad. Now if you do repeated rounds the shrimp will die and quit breeding. Found that out redosing guppy tanks over and over and shrimp populations in guppy tanks sometimes went to 0. Now I plan to just hit all tank tanks with a round of fenbendazole once a year as a just in case. Research before doing, fenbendazole can be deadly to some critters especially mystery snails and other apple types of snails along with nerites. There may be more, but fenbendazole is a serious thing to put into tanks. I have the typical planted tank snails, Malaysian trumpets, rams horns, pond, bladder and so on. I see no effect on those snails.

@@MarkShellyAquatics i have tried doing salt in the tank. I was up to 7 tablespoons and still nothing. So i ended up doing api general cure. I hope that does the trick and will do follow ups up to 4 weeks. I have removed the neos that i could visibly see that was affected. I hope it killed all of the scutariella that may have been living on the plants.

@@MarkShellyAquatics 4 week update. The salt treatment did actually work. For my 10 gallon, anywhere between 5-7 tablespoons did the job. No real harm to the snails, plants and shrimps. I removed molts that I found for up to 2 weeks. After that, I just left them and I have not seen any Suctariella come back.

I'm experiencing a Scutariella outbreak that rapidly worsened after using "Planaria Zero," and I'm currently treating it with "Bio Protector Z1." I'm on the fourth round of treatment now, and while the numbers seem to have decreased, some still remain. A few shrimp are still carrying a significant number of Scutariella. Since there are too many shrimp, treating them individually with a saltwater dip has been difficult. (I did try it on some severely affected individuals.) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V_39CY-k2-E.htmlsi=CRe0wv95wmTG1KVL My shrimp are carrying Scutariella all over their bodies. I’m hoping that the treatment will be effective, and if Z1 doesn’t resolve the issue, I plan to use Praziquantel next.

@forwaitfor I only ever had a few shrimp with it. Prazi don't seem to do much, but 1 round of fenbendazole wiped it out for goof. Prazi seemed to keep it from Spreading or getting worse, but fenbendazole is the only thing that knocked it out for good.

This has happened to me 2wice. first time used no planaria because I though they were leeches. I was noticing them at such a small size they didnt look like classic infestations. Id see 1 1mm spec and salt dip. This time around it happened again and saw this video and another and saw smaller ones on peoples infestations and bam. So I am going to try Fenbendezole and salt dips. Salt dips worked and thoiught it was gone. Now I have100ish babies and too hard to spot and dip em all. Thanks Mark!

Yeah, it sucked at the time, but knowing what I know now, Scutariella isn't really that big of a deal. I had it in the one tank, and might have seen it in a couple others, but really really hard to see, just in beginning stages. Never did a follow up with this video , but I did end up doing a 3 treatment round of fenbendazole in all my shrimp tanks just to make sure. Haven't seen any signs of it since and this was back in late winter I do believe.

@@MarkShellyAquatics good to know, thanks so much for the quick respose, yea I have a keen eye for small detail, be autistic does not help lol! I had a run in with them a while back with my carbon rilis. I did salt dips and stressed too much about it. No Planeria worked but killed all snail life, and 6 months later snails are alive in this tank which is now my pymgy cory tank. No my orange rilis have it. It started on one and I though tI salt dipped it away. Have about 50ish babies swimming around and can see the small spec on some so salt dipping again. I'd rather treat the tank. The cull tank I use for this colony also has it and a berried female has eggs on her carapace. Do you remember what dose you followed?
