We've gotten the question, "Why did you turn the turret" a lot in the last couple of weeks. We get it frequently in response to the out-of-the-box ideas that end up making ship the special place it is.
In this podcast episode we answer the "why" behind what we do.
Haven't seen the turret turn yet?

I’m really happy to see the Iowa get some attention and recognition on RU-vid. I love all the videos Ryan Semanski puts out on the New Jersey, but I also want to see she her sister ships get the same love and attention.

The turret was rotated for the same reason that people climb mountains.

I know that feeling when machinery starts to run up and the ship feels alive .Sadly none of the RN. ships I've worked on have been preserved so it's great to rekindle a few memories with your videos .

In an age where digital media has consumed everyone, people are starting to become fascinated by mechanical objects. Things that are real, that move, and that they can see, hear, and feel for themselves. The digital revolution has left a hole in people's souls. Things like a working battleship turret or a steam locomotive give people a welcome break from that.

Have you considered using Iowa’s own winches and crane equipment to onload the projectiles? Just one more piece of equipment to be preserved through restoration!

Sometimes. We do them for some events and we've also done a couple from areas deep in the ship.

The Porthole Podcast "broke" the news that future plans for the Iowa call for cutting through the hull for a new entrance, gutting compartments behind it and widening the interior corridors. Wont this compromise the watertightness during any potential large storms and allow rust to spread even faster on the inner hull once you have it cut open due to moisture? I get that it's been done on other ships like the Yorktown, Queen Mary, and Victory; but those are either in permanent drydock, or have a much taller hull above the waterline. I love how you folks are all gung-ho about getting parts of the ship restored to a potential "operational state" , but I dont like the idea of permanent alterations to the historical fabric that once gone cant be put back.

I'm afraid some changes will be necessary to accommodate the development of the National Museum of the Surface Navy. If she were the last of her kind, I might find that troubling. Fortunately, the Iowa's three sister ships are also preserved and aren't likely to be altered in the same fashion.
