Sdplanes USA currently offers the sd-1 minisport single seat airplane kit. Available in the TD, TG, and TGC versions, this model has a maneuvering speed of 98 mph (156 km/h) with a maximum speed (vne) of 131 mph (210 km/h). The aircraft is 14.27 ft (4,35 m) in length, with a height of 4 ft (1,23m), a wingspan of 19.68 ft (6,0m), and a tank capacity of 9 gal (34 l). Maximum pilot weight is 233 lbs (105 kg).
SD1 Mini Sport experimental aircraft - Construction
The fuselage is comprised of sitka spruce trusses reinforced with carbon fiber and carbon rods, covered with thin plywood. The inside width of the cockpit is 21.3” (54 cm) in the standard version, with expansion of the pilot compartment possible with the XL version. The back of the pilot seat is inclined slightly for comfort and is removable to allow access to the baggage compartment located behind the seat. The cabin hood is made of composite with a polycarbonate windshield.
Wing assembly consists of a composite main spar with carbon caps to which the ribs of extruded polystyrene are glued. This skeleton is covered with thin plywood and wing tips of extruded polystyrene with fiberglass lay-up are attached. The wings are connected to the fuselage by two main and two auxiliary pins. The flaperons are connected to the controls by a control pin.
The construction of the horizontal tail is similar to that of the wings. The tail is completely moveable, has an anti-servo tab, and is statically balanced. Spring trimming is under the pilot seat. The fin has a main composite spar with carbon caps and a tail hinge. Tail attachment consists of control and tab rods, and a pin. The horizontal tail and flaperons are controlled by pushrods and bellcranks. The flaperon mixer is under the pilot seat. The rudder is controlled by 2mm cables.
SD1 Mini Sport experimental aircraft - The Engine
Any engine from 24 to 50 HP can be used in the sd-1 minisport. Maximum engine weight is 93 lbs (42 kg). The integral fuel tank is made of fiberglass and PVC foam and is located behind the firewall. The electrical system is battery-operated and will accept a 12 V outlet for accessories like GPS. The instrument panel includes an airspeed indicator, altimeter, compass, vario, and slip indicator. There is also space for a COM transceiver and TPD with a diameter of 57mm. The Com antenna is built into the airframe.
SD1 Mini Sport experimental aircraft - GRS Parachute Rescue System
The sd-1 will accommodate the GRS 4/240 and the Magnum 300 rescue systems or any other system of choice in a similar weight range. The rescue system is attached to the fuselage bulkhead behind the pilot’s back. The front ropes are attached to the upper engine mount hinges. The auxiliary rope is attached to the fuselage behind the cabin. If a light engine (like a Briggs and Stratton or the Hirth F-33) is used, the rescue system is mounted on the firewall. The SD 1 MiniSport Experimental aircraft can also be built without the rescue system.

there was a company that was coming out with this airplane you could buy completely built LSA compliant that was supposed to sell for around 65 thousand ready to fly. Do not know what happen to them but they seemed ready to go and then disappeared as it seems so many upstart low cost planes do,

They made a huge mistake using a non ASTM certified two stroke as the engine choice and could't get the plane certified, it sunk them. Nice to see someone else at least trying to bring this in though.

Good videos. I'm thinking a plane can really be a very simple thing. How about a styrofoam kit that you dowel together and lay fiber glass on and a gel coat. Could that work? Just super simple assembly. Some large rollerskate wheels. Couple of dirt cheap electric motors and off the shelf 18650 commodity lithium cells. It seems absolutely obvious to me that a clean design and well thought out production technique, you can hammer out planes by the thousands for pennies. It can even look hella good and go fast. Beauty costs nothing. Aerodynamics costs nothing. It's just smart.

I think the energy density (in relation to weight) means it’s very difficult to build an electric plane light enough to be practical although new battery each with higher energy density seems to be on the horizon.

Actually , rc planes are incredibly durable and lightweight , they usually have carbon fiber wing supports, it could work.

@@bikersoncall an RC model airplane doesn't Cary a payload. An RC is flying at gross-weight at all times, simply to bring a battery that lasts 8-15 minutes. The best lithium batteries in the world are only 0.022 the energy density of gasoline/kerosene. That means you need 50X the weight in batteries v.s. fuel, to fly the same distance. Fuel usually takes up 15-25% of the airplanes loaded weight. (Call it 20% average) therefore you need to carry 10X the airplanes gross-weight in batteries to fly the same distance. That doesn't even make sense.

I quite like a minimal approach and optimization and I think the concept has far more potential in sleekness and appearance because looks are very important. And there is huge potential in a clean design that's easily mass produced. I believe in a factory hammering out a plane in 2 hours instead of 1000 amateur hours of unknown quality. 1000 unnecessary hours is a waste of life in my book. There is no reason that a sleek dirt cheap plane couldn't go 300km/h and have 2-3000km range. Add to that 4way fractional ownership and it could be 5k$ for a brand new plane. That's powerful.

Nice plane, lousy engine selection....needs to handle heavier engines. Two strokes are a no go to me. I wish you luck otherwise.

There are several four strokes available for the SD-1, such as Briggs & Stratton SE33. You can't put heavier engines into such a small plane. The SD-2 however uses Rotax 912s.

This is apparently a weight issue, up to around 100 pounds is the limit. Not too many non 2 strokes that do that unfortunately.
