After watching interviews with Matthew from SDCC I have another level of respect for him as an actor and as a person, because he constantly mentions Casey Kasem and how he wants to honor his legacy with this character. It's not just a voice actor that took over a role and now "owns" it, he respects the character and the original voice actor that brought it to life for so many. What an awesome dude.
The part where Matthew mentions about how video game voice actors don't get much in the way of salary hits hard considering how I know of someone who lamented about it, and how the industry should give them even more credit.
He kind of played a type of Ultra Instinct Shaggy already in Legend of the Phantosaur from 2011 where he gets hypnotized to become fearless and he knocks out every biker in a bar fight.
So glad he doesn’t hate playing Shaggy anymore cause his Shaggy is my favorite . He’s such a sweet soul. My most fav actor ever . Hope I meet him one day and get a hug from him.
"The internet is weird, man." XD Gotta love Matthew Lillard for his performances over the years and when he talks, he seems like such a genuine guy and he's a celebrity I would love to meet at a con someday
Great interview! (With terrible audio!) I truly love Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. He hasn't just inherited the role from Kasem, for me he IS THE voice of Shaggy, and I grew up watching Kasem as Shaggy, but he was always a little rough around the edges, whereas Lillard just nails the essence of Shaggy, giving a perfect delivery every time. For me, it's like Kasem was just standing in until the REAL Shaggy arrived! (I think Welker and Messick are about evenly matched as Scooby.) I LOVE that Matthew cares so much about the legacy of the character, even objecting to certain lines in Mystery Incorporated! :-) It really makes me happy knowing he cares about Shaggy and isn't JUST in it for the paycheck. Though I agree with him that these guys should be paid well. The vocal talent is the most important part of making a cartoon entertaining, without that you have nothing. Given how enduring and popular the franchise is, I find it surprising that there aren't more Scooby-Doo documentary or reunion type shows. I'd love to see an extended interview with producers and cast - Lillard, Welker, DeLisle (Daphne), and one or more Velmas. Would be amazing to see them all doing voices and bouncing off each other. I adore the last three series (Mystery Inc, Be Cool and Guess Who). They were each outstanding in their own way. Though sadly I think the glory days are now over, and we'll never have shows as good as that again. Modern Hollywood seems to be making everything 'woke' and 'adult', and I'm very sad about the upcoming Velma series - corrupting a wholesome children's franchise - and insulting the fans and creators by race-swapping a white franchise as a publicity stunt! For the record, I've never heard of "Ultra Instinct Shaggy". I'm not even sure what a meme is to be honest, something to do with social media, which I don't use. I just like cartoons and anything wholesome. Lillard is a hero to me! :-) Oh and I still don't think there's ever been a Scooby Doo series with great music, which is a shame. They should get Shuki Levy to score a series! That would be phenomenal! I'd also love to see Captain Disillusion guest star in an episode! :-)
Matthew really is underrated. He has a pretty good range. My wife is fan of good girls and she had to check out when i told her he is Shaggy cause she didn't believe me at first.
