The quest never disappoints. I’d love to see a little innukchuk built out of chrystal slabs. The taco one was fab. Thank you for getting out there.

Beautiful red jaspers and agates, but that huge crevice agate is stunning. The red glass may glow orange due to manganese. Can't wait to see what we find in the next quest 😘💖💗💕

Nate, I have a question I'd like answered. What is the difference between chert and jasper? I've watched you collect both from the same stream and since they both started out as sedimentary and then went through a metamorphic process, how the hell do you tell the difference since they both can have several different color levels! I think a whole video could be made on just this subject. Inquiring minds want to know!!

so.....I agree, thin line, as far as the varieties around my zone, identification is easy because after a while they just have subtle differences and things that make it clear but only here and in these forms, there are so many forms of jasper and chert , as I traveled cross country I was instantly sent back to best guesses. I have with my own eyes seen jasper still mixed into beds of chert and formed as lenses and inclusions in large chert boulders , the coast is the best place to see them still together. so simplest way to separate them is to think of their formation, both silicates from sediments , yes. but the chert is the bedded material and the jasper more the pure silicate secondary inclusions, the chert forming from dissolved creatures and leaving only silicate shell sludge, the jasper being more like silicates muds in that mix, in shallower seas the calcium of the shells doesn't dissolve away so you get calciferous oozes instead the chalks and limestones , with flint and cherts in the chalk, so the chalk and lime stone bing the bedded material and the flint nodules and cherts being the silicious inclusions, the deeper water cherts will be full of tiny remnant fossil bits of shell you can see in the translucence , and the same tinted green jasper will be more just a solid silicates material, often less translucent than chert. in the greens and browns that are the most confusing in this area, the square bed shape of the chert, sedimentary characteristics , and its translucence are its main give aways, where the jaspers are mostly solid non translucent material born of silicates and mud ( kinda ) . your right, need to do a video, im just learning book stuff also, mostly a field guy my whole life so I know what I know but often have to read and reread.

Okay, had my head up my alpha concerning chert and jasper! They aren't metamorphic but get their start as a silica enriched fluid. I've read about how they formed but it still doesn't help eyeballing the difference in the field. They share hardness, density and waxy appearance along with a variety of similar colors.

the cherts always seem to be more translucent and the jaspers more solid colors. the solid yellows and reds are dead give aways for jasper on this coast. jaspers tend to have the bright vivid colors and the cherts all the earthen toes and shades, so mustard solid yellow , jasper, little golden grey translucent without partnering , probably a chert. but again at the coast you can see huge jasper veins and sections of for sure jasper and jaspagates all swirled in and mixed with massive Cher boulders as they fall out of they're bedded positions in the cliffs over head, so some "metamorphic " mixing has occurred at least. often if you don't get a strait answer from the books its because they are all just best guesses. this is one of those areas, none of us were there so we can only observe, debate , and theorize, way far to go and you are part of the learning , we all are. Roadside Geology Of Ca. is my favorite book for this state.

and.... , remember jasper is a form of chalcedony, like agate is and they determine that not by composition or creation, but bu color and pattern. this is part of what goes on with cherts and jaspers. ... and flints : ) as in the uk, its chert and flint getting mixed up most often.
