Scarba Corryvreckan & Jura Part 3: Escape from The West Coast in F7 & F8
South Easterly Winds.
Day 4: Runatallain: We awoke to face strong winds which was forecast to strengthen to Force 7 & F8 and no sign it would drop over the next few days, we decided to pack up and escape back up Jura's Western shoreline to the safety of Glengarrisdale.
The wind had strengthened to gale force by the time we were ready to launch.
We sought shelter close in up the western side but we knew the exposed sections of Shian and Corpach Bay's as well as low Western facing Glen's would afford us little shelter blasting us with crazily strong winds and dangerous gusts.
Finally making Glengarrisdale after a struggle into wind to land.
A well earned overnight rest in the Bothy
Day 5: The winds were lighter but still forecast strong South Easterlies we made our way up the remainder of the West side to the small Islands of Eileen Mor and Eileen Beag prior to crossing Corryveckan, through to the South Eastern corner of Scarba to catch the start of the flood stream and strong tailwind North up the Sound of Luing to Fladda with crazy kayak speeds recorded over 10mph !!
A quick comfort break and a bite to eat we launched to Finnish the rest of our journey north back to Easdale by late lunchtime.

Thanks for the recording, love the commenting on the birds knocking heads about and the females not caring. Nature sends you blustery winds and tide changes and you trooper on. Interesting watching you and Ian navigate the waters and the decision making, great footage of the rocks and the wind was challenging you at most times, cheers!

Hi Steven, thanks again for your comments and pleased you are joining me on my adventures. Yeah the femal goats 🐐 were quite happy for the males to fight it out. That West coast can be unforgiving in the wrong conditions and decision making is crucial to avoid being pinned for days on end but actions must always be weighed heavily against consequences. Those winds were pretty mean 😳 😃 Glad you enjoyed watching it was a cracker of a trip.

Absolutely superb Geoff! I've camped along loch tarbert a couple of times - a wonderful location. And the west coast of jura is just so stunning. But I dont think i would have ventured out in the conditions you and Ian were in 😂.

Cheers Bob, yes Tarbert is just outstanding!! Views South across to the Paps and North onto the raised beaches, a brilliant landscape. Did you get a chance to camp at Shian Bay on the West side? Walking inland along Shian river and waterfall is breathtaking and again the huge expanse of raised beaches are a sight to behold, its another world up there. Aye, the wind was absoloutley howling I lost it at one point and thought I was going to end up on Mull, just couldn't get the bows around into wind no matter what I did with the skeg 🙄🙄 finally made it !!🤪😲 Best Regards & happy paddling...Geoff

Well done for knowing when not to. Once did a crossing from Crinan NW toward Scarba's SE corner, at the bothy, in a SW'ly 7 gusting 8. As we crossed the race SE of Corryvreckan's entrance, I re-defined my understanding of 'knackered'. My limit had been reached, and I slept like the proverbial log on the bothy's beach that night.

Thanks Bevo 👍, Yes you heard spot on, had 2 vertebrae fused and spinal decompression done on April 26th, 3 weeks after this trip 😂😂. Rehab is coming along fine thanks, 9 weeks post op now and had my 1st local Sea kayak trip last Thursday 6.5 miles in flat calm conditions, all was good in fact went further than I'd intended, shoulders a bit achy the next day but I still have a lot of degeneration in the adjacent vertebrae, only time will tell. Off to Orkney and or Shetland with the wife in the motorhome but sadly no boat if... I want to retain my spheres attached 🤣. Have a browse at some of my other vids while I'm away and I'll see what I can edit next!! Cheers 👍👍

Thanks Mike, pleased you enjoyed it. 😉 I love it when a plan comes together🤣🤣😂. The reason for not taking the sheltered side of Scarba as wed originally planded would have put us in mid flood stream off the North end of Rubha Fiola and it hammers off the end swinging out to the West between Ormsa and the Black Isle, leaving us a slog up the back Eddie on the East Side of Rubha Fiola and across the main flow to Fladda and Belnahua. As the wind was manageable in Corry. I reevaluated giving us the chance to take the ebb to the East Side of Scarba and capitalise on the Flood right up the Sound of Luing and the wind as it strengthened right up our tail 🤣🤣😂 hence the whopping 10.6mph...I've never been that fast before in a laden sea kayak !!! 😂

Thank you for bringing back memories Did this exact trip way back in 1986 in my Nordkap HM ,no go pro,s or drones in those days so very little documentary evidence other than memories in the old brain and old photo,s ,keep them coming your videos are excellent ..

Thanks James and so pleased you enjoyed it. Yeah the camera angle is stuck in my mouth on a bite mount hence the funny voice at times 😂😂. Hi David and thanks for your comments, it's much appreciated. I hope my little adventures are helpful from a development point of view as we've all had to go through that process and I'd welcome any suggestions if there's maybe specific content you'd like me to include if possible. I'm constantly thinking of ways to incorporate information/demonstration to improve skills in the video's without loosing the context of it recording the actual trip which may inspire/inform others and help towards replicating themselves. @@geoffburke ooohhhfff there's so much!! I wonder how you do your planning and where you source your local information for the paddles you do. The process for organising yourself and your group to navigate the cave networks safely and how you know what the sea state will do once underground and confined to avoid being trapped or sucked away. (Shits me up just watching a film about going in there 😆) you must be a pot holer to enjoy all that weight bearing down on your head. How do you keep from damaging your boat too, I'm looking at fiberglass boats but am petrified of scratching it up or worse.

I've been at it for a lot of years 50 + and at 73 (an old looney I hear you say 😂) I've always loved the sea, started body board surfing in holidaying in Cornwall from 10, then proper board surfing as a teenager, started Kayaking in 1972 and kayak surfing, had loads of other adrenaline sports inc; karate, paragliding (coach) paramotoring, scuba diving advanced instructor, potholing (you guessed that one 😂), and most of the usual mountain biking etc. The Scarba, Jura area is special for me having dived and kayaked through there over many years so planning isn't a chore and local knowledge helps loads. General kayaking in rough water, caves and rock dodging is more about reading the water and getting the timing just right...we all make mistakes though. My boat has many scratches and scuffs (I always say, it's not a boat until its scratched 😂), luckily no holes though!! Time in the boat (getting out as much as possible), with progressive conditions with the right people and your skills will improve rapidly. Happy viewing and keep those comments coming.... @@treebandido2447 Just realised I hadn't answered all your questions. Regarding planning.... Ordnance Survey maps of the UK, marine charts (not so much now), UK Admirality Pilot books and Tidal Stream Atlas, Tide Tables of the planned areas and a whole plethora of Internet sources for some of the above including Reliable Weather Forecasting web sites, Met Office 'Deep Dive' on RU-vid, and surface pressure charts. These are my 'main sources' of information for safe multi day trip planning as well as watching for weather changes while out kayaking (mark 1 eyeball). Enjoy! 😀👍💪

Bloomin' fabulous Geoff! I loved every minute of it.. the video and calming , knowledgeable commentary. An amazing time... and I will watch it again, more than once. It is obvious how well you get on with young Ian ...always the biggest bonus. Thank you for bringing this home for us. Ha, ha, so pleased you enjoyed it Pam, it was a superb trip in an area I love! It has so much beauty and all of the elements I love in our sport, the tide races are truly amazing and integral to every part when planning or adapting to the conditions. Iain is a superb guy and a real gentleman. My scalpel was wielded 3 weeks after this trip and I'm now 9 weeks post op, had my 1st sea kayak trip last Thursday and did 6.5 miles...flat calm local paddle, felt great 👍 shoulders ached a wee bit the next day and I've other vertebrae that will probs require more screws etc in the future but for now...pretty good 👍 🤣🤣😂 Thanks again Pam for all your wonderful comments. My Kayak icon/avatar was taken in surf at Treyarnon Bay in Cornwall many years ago, know its not South Devon but still a beautiful part of the world. Thanks Alex, it was a cracking trip, a shame we didn't get to explore into Loch Tarbert but there's always next time as we could have been pinned there for days. Sometimes you have to make decisions that could go either way and that remote West coast isn't very forgiving especially with ant swell. Pleased you enjoyed it 👍 🙂 😀

Enjoyed this so much Geoff. Great videoing and editing. Pretty good for a single camera, well done. As usual your commentary and dulcet scottish tones makes for a terrific listening experience as well. As a fellow Mitchell Bombora paddle user, I was very pleased to see how well that beautiful stiff, wide blade, assisted in those extreme windy conditions. Was Ian paddling a carbon fibre Nordkapp? Lovely looking boat. And well paddled, as those windy conditions would not have been well liked by a Nordkapp. For a man considering back surgery in his very near future I hope his surgeon was not devotee of sea kayaking RU-vid adventures. It was clear at the end of the days paddle, there was a certain reluctance to finish the adventure despite the tough conditions, OR, because of them. I know the feeling. Certainly, the end was worthy of a song from Ian and I was disappointed it was not to be. BTW, the North Shore continues to be a very reliable servant. You must be pleased. Thanks again Peter you're too kind, I use Davinci Resolve 18 for editing both the GoPro footage and DJI Mini 3 Pro drone footage, it's a huge learning curve that just keeps on going the further you get into it, which I must say is making a huge difference but means I spend a massive amount of time editing but proving worthwhile. Not sure about my Scottish accent as I'm not quite a 'Geordie', actually a 'Wearsider' with a sense of humour falling into the trap of mimicking Iain's accent 🤣🤣🤣 I love my Bomborra it has such a remarkable indexing with the heavy Crank and ovaling so it's always in the correct place, the downside is I do get blisters but that's probably just me. I just love sea kayaking and never want it to end no matter how knackered I get, I also love the Atlantic which I've described as 'wearing it' felling part of it as every good boat should feel like. I used to have one of the very early Ana's Acuta's with the Ocean cockpit, that one I definitely had to wear and it was an astounding boat which I could lay on its side and would just stay there. Thanks again for your comments David, so pleased you enjoyed it. It took a good bit of editing and I'm still not quite happy with sound levels, but always room for improvement 👍 If memory serves me correctly it was mid between springs and neaps. With regard to Corryvreckan I always try to take new folk through with some tide running but no swell from the West, otherwise if you go for absolute slack (not that it's ever totally slack🤔🙄) it can be a 'none event' and they may well get the wrong impression. Standing waves can just appear out of nowhere. I think you've watched parts 1 & 2 ?? Cheers Geoff 👍

Hi John and thanks for watching, I hope you're enjoying my little adventures. I use a Mitchell Blade's Bomborra (medium) with a heavily cranked oval grip. It gives me remarkable indexing, so I always know where the blade is, helping with a 'rock solid' roll. I'm a 'lefty' and old school using a slightly less than a 90deg feather so my paddle action may look a wee bit strange. Could be that both rotator cuffs have been (repaired) operated on in the past with the left still being badly torn and weak 😂😂 Thanks again and best regards. Hello Geoff, First off, I hope you are doing well and back to your active and healthy self. Again, you give us another beautiful and certainly educational video. You and Ian demonstrate incredible skill with grace and well placed humour. I'm just back from a wonderful trip to the beautiful and rugged island of Newfoundland. We were able to paddle the Twillingate area of the province, BEAUTIFUL! and not unlike much of the formation and geography of your neck of the woods. We lucked into perfect conditions. We were able to see many whales and other sea/wildlife. During an entrance into a little bay we were met by two Humpback whales exiting the bay. Cheers Doug 👍 I'm doing fine thanks, been given the all clear by my surgeon last Tuesday eve and paddled the Farne Islands on Wed, my favourite spot on the Northumberland coast. So pleased you're enjoying the video's and finding them Interesting 😀 Your Newfoundland trip looked absolutely splendid the experience of paddling close to the humpbacks must have been amazing, such gentle giants...I've not had the pleasure but must organise a trip that could greatly increase my chances of such a wonderful experience. The closest experience of something like that was diving alongside a whale shark in Thailand, a chance encounter and so close I went to touch its fins as it swam slowly passed but pulled back at the last minute so as not to disturb its space, I was overwhelmed and felt so humbled that it had graced us with its presence, a beautiful experience! Loved the drone video and a glimpse into such a wonderful area as you say. I think time will run out before the bucket list gets depleted 🙄 Hopefully a video coming out next week if my surgeon approves it as I've dedicated it to him and thought I should seek his consent before posting live to everyone on RU-vid Stay tuned and stay safe 👍👍 Cheers
