Thanks for your great comments John. Yeah, its always a great trip, we've had some wild conditions on several return journeys, as everywhere in Scotland weather and sea conditions can change very rapidly. I don't rely on any one particular weather forecasting service or App !! I tend to watch Met Office "Deep Dive" and "10 Day Trend" video's on RU-vid plus Atlantic Charts as they give a clearer picture of weather fronts etc as they approach the UK...very good sources of info with explanations of weather systems and their potential effects. Also use Apps...XC Weather, Windy. Sorry John it this sounds a little blunt... but!!! The trip to Ailsa Craig is around 9 miles and usually takes around 2.5 - 3hrs at an average pace in a modern sea kayak fully laided with camping gear. If your contemplating this trip, it shouldn't be attempted alone and ensuring all concerned are well versed in open water crossings, being very confident in paddling your craft, with all the necessary safety equipment and prepared to stay overnight if conditions change. If you fall short in any of the above you've no business in attempting it!! Thanks again and feel free to browse, comment and Subscribe for more video's. Best Regards Geoff

@@geoffburke thanks a lot for the detailed reply. I'm not going to jump into the sib and head off on my first sea outing and so I'm just trying to gather the information on what I need and what to expect. @@geoffburke Thank you so much, Geoff. Also for the info re the beach midchannel on Scarba, maybe its better to beach at the bothy and then walk over to watch the channel. Divers get the whole 3D picture, able to move down (and up), while kayakers are limited to the surface. Now knowing about the 200 m deep channel , I find it still hard to wrap your head around, that the majority of the water masses choose to make a hard 90 degree left hand turn into the Corryvreckan, rather than going further straight up North.

Another great video, Geoff. That looked a lot of fun. One thing I found when things got sloppy was my very tippy kayak, with a very round profile to the hull, was just so stable allowing the swell and chop to just pass by even from the side. I would probably have taken a bit of a detour to the northwest to visit my grandparents home town of Carnoustie, and maybe a side trip for an 'Arboath Smokie'. My parents loved the smokies when they visited. Would be about a conservative 20 hour paddle there which would be doable.

The "Bothy" you mention in Glengarrisdale Bay is one of many old buildings/homesteads which have been signed over to and maintained by the Mountain Walkers Association, used as retreats for walkers and others to use in these remote areas. @@geoffburke It's enjoyable to watch from the POV of the kayaker. Editing is a very time consuming task because along with being entertaining you're telling a story of the trip, what you see, the unique qualities of the area. The Appalachian Trail that covers several states in the US has structures that are open ended for hikers to stay overnight in or to take breaks along the trail. Most hikers don't concern themselves with who stays but you never know who is lurking, females that hike alone or in pairs are vulnerable. The "bothy" looked nice and because the travelers on your side of the pond have respect it's nicely maintained.

@@stevenhulbert7540 Absolutely, on every aspect you mention Steven. Yes, unfortunately certain elements in our society these days have little respect for their surroundings, others or even themselves. Thankfully, most of the areas we visit in sea kayaks are so remote, requiring effort, careful planning, consideration and a mindfulness of our surroundings that it deters the majority of that element. I suppose a great deal of your popular trails with start & finish points more accessible to 4x4 vehicles and large groups partying can lead to a lot of inconsiderate behaviour. We can only do our bit to ensure these magnificent areas remain! I had to do quite a lot of soul searching before actually commiting to posting my adventure video's on RU-vid as I feel social media can play a huge part accelerating the negative aspects of everything these days. Thankfully our wonderfull sport requires a great deal of effort etc as previously mentioned, that it's almost self governing...long may it last! Hi Charles, I appreciate your kind comments👍 😊 I suspect you're new to the channel so welcome & thanks for joining. Please feel free to browse and share with friends, lots of interesting content with beautiful scenery, wildlife and crazy conditions! Muckle Flugga is an Iconic sea kayaking trip in a spectacularly remote location, swept by strong tide races and huge seas. We were very fortunate with conditions as its not always possible to cross or get near to Out Stack !! Landing on Muckle Flugga is never easy and the climb to to the lighthouse was "gut busting" but hugely rewarding....stunning. Best Regards Geoff. Regular new content coming soon 👍

Thanks Again KJ, I'm pleased to see you're still joining with us on our many little adventures. Yeah the conditions were quite lively as it was such a small weather window, we had to be mindful of the strong winds forecast in the afternoon in case they arrived early. Thankfully we missed just about all of the rain and we were off the water by 2.30pm before the wind strengthened. A great day and I'll be editing the rest of the footage in the next few days so watch this space for the full video in the next week or so. Cheers 🍻

Geoff, Amble and Coquet paddler here…there is a Garmin handheld gps on your foredeck. Can you tell me which model, which charts, if any, are loaded, and what you do about batteries?
@geoffburke
@geoffburke 3 месяца назад
Hi Josephine and thanks again 👍 The Unit is a Garmin GPSMAP 65s they are available at a little over £300 and come preloaded with their 'Topo' maps shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/garmin-gpsmap-65s/?sku=753759257873&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4NH9m9bbhAMV15xQBh1hcgIdEAQYASABEgKgWPD_BwE You can buy OS Map cartridges which covers the whole of the UK but are expensive at £301 www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-TOPO-Great-Britain-PRO/dp/B0977CN9W3/ref=asc_df_B0977CN9W3/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=535073594861&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8870765529043675453&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007133&hvtargid=pla-1415934564154&psc=1&mcid=edb230ad0a843c6bbec7048102236414 I tend to use mine for distance and speed as well as producing route trails for my video's by uploading the file to 'Relive' I'm regularly asked about the GPS and the mount I made for the boat so if you're interested I've photos of how it's made and mounted, just give me a shout. The Unit takes 2 'AA' batteries which they claim you can get 2 days use out of but I change mine each day. I bought a whole bunch of rechargeable's to take on multi day trips and swap out with fully charged ones every evening ready for the next day. I also have a couple of large capacity power banks for charging my drone batteries, phone and Action 4 camera...too much technical gear, it's a pain as it's not light 🙄😂😂 You'll have to give me shout when you're out and about and we'll get a trip in together as I only live down a Houghton le Spring. Best Regards Geoff

@@geoffburke Geoff, that’s brill. Thank you. My purpose for it would be a confident satellite given GPS “You are here” as opposed to where am I heading? I’m off to Shetland myself in July, and feel such a bit of kit worthwhile up there! I will certainly give you a shout one day for a paddle. Best wishes for the upcoming paddling season.
@geoffburke
@geoffburke 3 месяца назад
@@josephinebennington7247 That's great 👍 I find mine very useful especially in tidal areas to judge progress/speed, also open water crossings to judge drift. The TopoActive maps are a bit like retro 'Packman' type arcade games (very blocky) so the map cartridge would be great but I can't justify spending more money on techy stuff at this stage 🤔😱 Sorry, I'll miss you in Shetland, I'm up there in June this time and possibly again in August depending on how my wife's knee replacement is progressing. Let me know if you get the GPS and I'll send you pics of the mounting, it's easy to replicate, actually I have a spare piece of foam so could make one for you. 😃

@@geoffburke I’ve ordered the unit. 14 days to check it fits my requirements and return if it doesn’t. I did consider the 79s with Bluechart maps. Depends how blocky the 65s maps turn out to be. I’m considering also a Deck Pod which has a pocket for such as the handheld. I’ll keep my options open, and may come to you for our holder. Cheers for now, and I will report results.

@@josephinebennington7247 Excellent! I hope it meets your requirements, I hate suggesting equipment as we all perceive things differently 😀 I have made the deck mount utilising garmins belt clip to ensure easy fitting and removal, I'd suggest fitting a lanyard and if doing a rescue it can be dropped overboard to avoid damage. Please reply with your email address so I can send pictures, once I have it I'll confirm then you can delete your reply for security. Always happy to help 👍😊

Hi and thanks again Johnathan. I now use the DJI Action 4 on a bite mount held in my mouth. I prefer the slightly wider field of view and other functions/quality, the lens has a hydrophobic coating to repel water...best practice is simply throw a handful of water at the lens then it's perfectly clear of smaller droplets, don't lick the lens or try and dry it! I still have the Hero 10 to supplement footage...when I can be bothered to take it 😄😄 Full trip video to follow when editing time permits...watch this space as always 👍 Cheers

@@geoffburke HI Geoff, your picture clarity is amazing, well done as ever! Look forward to seeing the full video. That's inspired me to get back on the water. How did you shout with the bite mount in? Do you keep in on a tether? :)
@geoffburke
@geoffburke 3 месяца назад
@@jonathanbamfordThanks Johnathan. I'm very pleased with the Action 4 the quality is superb and as I say with a slightly wider FOV allows me to capture that bit extra at the sides when in tight gullies etc without causing GoPro 'barrel distortion' and still allows horizon leveling. I can still talk and shout to others with the bite mount in my teeth but I'll never make a ventriloquist 😂 as you can hear in some clips. I made a floatation tether which goes around my neck as you can't seem to buy a 'floaty' for the Action 4 like they make for the GoPro (which are quite bulky too). I haven't tried DJI's Avata and can appreciate the benefits for certain shots and video's and have tried my Mini 3 Pro in FPV mode but prefer to keep the horizon level, finding it too distracting. Ive been watching some of your video's too...very nice work! Thanks again

Hi Gadget, thanks again! Yes, some great clapotis conditions as the swell, wind and tide were stacking water up onto the island then reflecting back to meet the incoming waves. Keeping a close eye out was really important to avoid being caught out, not always easy when I was trying to get footage of the waves crashing on the rocks or others in the group. Full trip video to follow in due course when time permits...hopefully soon! Cheers
