Sea Kayaking the Isle of Skye's West Coast April 2022 Part 1: Days 1 & 2
Day 1: Dunvegan to Meanish Pier
Day 2: Meanish Pier to Lorgill Bay
Our recent Sea Kayaking trip to Skye would see us kayaking almost the entire West Coast from Dunvegan to Spar Cave, South of Elgol.
The trip involved timing settled weather including Wind Swell and Tides to travel the exposed West side as it would be open to the full blast of any prevailing weather, with long stretches of coastline under 1,000 foot shear cliffs without any available landing spots.
Neist Point; would be the pinch point of the trip with it's strong complex tidal streams which can produce strong overfalls when opposing any wind or swell.
Day 1: Started with a beautifully calm sea and brilliant sunshine as we left Dunvegan to travel the 8 mile out of the loch.to round Dunvegan Head, during which time the wind increased and sea state began to chop up. Arriving at the head we were faced with strong winds opposing the tide race which runs very strongly off the end and around the western cliffs, conditions continued to worsen with breaking seas and strong gusting winds requiring a more focused paddling approach with a very visual effect of the strong wind against the tide race breaking heavily further out to sea!
The further South we travelled the more benign conditions became the more able we were to take in the magnificent 1000 foot cliffs indented with sea caves, Eagles soaring high on the up draughts and waterfalls plunging into the sea. The head of Milovaig and Waterstein came into view and finally we could see the entrance to Loch Pooltiel which we crossed in very strong winds from the stern to arrive at our camp spot for the night at Meanish Pier. We were greeted by a member of the local fishing community and allowed to camp in the shelter of a cluster of old boats hauled out on the grass behind the pier.
Day 2: We woke to lighter winds and calmer seas, breaking camp and heading South and around the point, the section of coastline gave way from shear cliffs to a wonderful array of pinnacles and prehistoric shapes, becoming more indented with deep caves and even more waterfalls. Soon after we could see Neist Point becoming clearer and and more prominent with its Lighthouse on the low headland as it jutted out West of the coastline.
Neist Point, the most Westerly point on Skye was the crux of the trip as the complex tidal streams and eddies which form in the immediate area can produce severe overfalls and huge seas with any opposing swell and adverse weather, thankfully the weather was kind and our timing just right!
On rounding the point we could feel the eddy current running out of Moonen Bay, we located a suitable lunch spot deep in the bay where we could land next to a waterfall.
Further south we explored more deep caves, natural arches and waterfalls as we made our way to our next camp spot at Lorgill Bay.
In the bitter wind we explored some of the ruins of the old community that once inhabited the area and spent a chilly night as the wind was being funnelled down the valley and straight out to sea. Too cold and windy to bother with a camp fire, we chatted in the tents drinking our supply of Whisky and Rum until it was time to retire for the night.
PARTS 2 & 3 TO FOLLOW SOON

Thanks, yes, Skye's West Coast is superb for its coastline and features and like any of Scotland's islands are steeped in history and have plenty old ruins to explore especially the remote uninhabited islands. I've just returned from 2 weeks world class sea kayaking in Shetland, so if you haven't seen any of my new video's from Sheltand uploaded so far, then check them out....with still more to come! It was absolutely mind blowing 🤯 😂 See Ramna Stacks for some crazy stuff!!! 😂😂😂

What tent are you using? You could add an equipment list to the description.
@geoffburke
@geoffburke Год назад
Hi Skywagon, I use the OEX Bandicoot 2 and Bob uses the Berghaus Cairngorm 2 both excellent kayak camping tents for strong winds etc not the lightest but that's not much of a consideration as we're not backpacking both separate down into 2 or 3 bags for stowing in the boats, Bob's has slightly more headroom. With regard to equipment, I find it's very much a mater of personal choice, even Bob and I have totally different kit, so I wouldn't think it appropriate to specify a list but always willing to discuss options. Thanks 👍

Great video but could really do without the insipid musical accompaniment (as with just about every video of sea kayaking ever made). The sound of the waves and wind is enough.
@geoffburke
@geoffburke 2 года назад
Thanks for your comments, with regard to making and editing videos to appeal to everyone's taste by adding or using elements of an already embedded soundtrack is the hardest thing in the process. It is impossible to just use wind and wave sound on calm days and render the video boring especially non sea kayakers but agree its all about finding the right balance, have even considered adding narration/voice-over to explain aspects of the visuals but don't feel confident with my voice as well as the extra time involved just to be subjected to negative comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video and hope you either subscribe or at least watch more on my channel but understand I make these as a way of recording my adventures for my memories and hopefully for others to enjoy and may even inspire fellow sea kayakers to visit and enjoy some stunning locations. I hope that reflects the spirit in which they appear. I notice you have a RU-vid channel yet no video's on which I can use to emulate your taste.

What's the weight of all the gear in the kayak when you start you trips? Thanks great videos.
@geoffburke
@geoffburke Год назад
Hi Paddle Dog, That's a good question 🤔 and after all these years I can't really answer it, I may have carried out that exercise years ago but unsure, anyway, suffice to say exact weight is pretty irrelevant from a paddling point of view as each expedition sea kaya will have its optimum load carrying weight, so it's trial and error inc load distribution for trim and handling. With regard to loading and unloading, it needs to be done as close to the water as possible for launching and landing, all my equipment can usually be carried be to and from the water in 2 x blue IKEA bags and I usually carry at least 4 litres of water and work on using 2 litres per day, with consideration worked out on suitable supply sources (rivers/streams) worked out for multi day trips. Loaded boats are very carefully manhandled over rocks etc using 2 people when finally launching and landing especially in swell etc and care taken getting in and out of the boat in any bad conditions 😀 😉.

Any general limits on conditions for it to be a go? Water temps there are?
@geoffburke
@geoffburke Год назад
No specific limits as every trip will have limiting factors i.e. remoteness, available landing depending on conditions of swell, wind and surf as a fully laden sea kayak would be easily damaged during landing and launching so you need to be mindful of changing conditions overnight for the following morning. Average UK sea temp ranges from 6-10 °C in the winter to 15-20 °C in summer

What brand/model tent are you guys using?
@geoffburke
@geoffburke 2 года назад
Hi Ruttledog, I use an OEX Bandicoot (which is now made by Berghaus and named 'Cheviot') and Bob uses the Berghaus 'Cairngorm', both very good 2 man tents, an ideal size for 1 person with gear and enough space to cook inside (with care) if it's bad weather.
