Hi Paul. From experience, I think the Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 is a fantastic rod for the money and takes some beating. A 20-30 Class should be fine for leads up to 12oz. If you need to fish with 16oz (as we sometimes do in Whitby) I find a 30-50 class rod is better suited. I can also recommend the Penn Warfare 30LW or the Daiwa Slosh 30 for a solid multiplier. I’ve seen them land hundreds of Codling and Ling on my boat. If you are interested in a Daiwa Slosh 30 (loaded with 50lb braid) and 20-30 Ugly Stik let me know. I have a set you can have.
