First off, the Whale should have not been in a pool, but in the ocean where he belonged, and these deaths could have been prevented. Second, after the first incident, the whale should have been released back into the ocean, and I repeat - WHERE HE BELONGED. He never should have been there no matter how entertaining he was in captivity.
The fact that Tilikum was stuck in a concrete tank for 20+ years and was abused by other orcas and the trainers completely disgust me and makes me angry at Seaworld for their horrible treatment of these orcas. He was also forced to perform shows every day for years and had little stimulation. He would some time in isolation when he wasn't performing and this caused him to display self destructive behavior where he would injure himself by hitting his head on the wall or bite the metal gate which caused his teeth to wore down. Tilikum didn't have enough room to swim in since orcas swim for hundreds of miles every day in the WILD and all of these factors caused him to be violent and attack people. I don't blame Tilikum for killing those 3 people.
@@rendafranker7088 Yeah, they're not sweet to the other animals in the ocean, but have you seen videos of how orcas have interacted with humans in the wild?
Anyone would go crazy if kept in what amounted to a bathtub day in and day out...Tilikum was kept in solitary confinment for the first few years then placed in a tank with 2 other female orcas who frequently tormented him. After all that trauma and abuse is it a surprise he lashed out???
@@Hockey_vrthen whose fault is this??? the ocra's fault ? who was taken away from his mother and his home just two years of age to serve as a puppet for humans.
These people never learn. You do NOT control the animal. The animal patiently tolerates you. That’s all. So when incidents like this happen all I can say is you asked for it
Oh, how perfectly insightful! isn’t it? Humans thinking they’re in control when, in reality, they’re only tolerated by these powerful creatures-what a delightful misunderstanding! And when incidents like this happen, oh, isn’t it just a splendid reminder of who truly holds the power? The humans certainly asked for it, didn’t they? Take Tilikum, for instance-a true master of patience and precision. He didn't just tolerate his situation; he bided his time, watched, and waited. Then, in a brilliantly dark moment of decision, he showed exactly what happens when humans forget their place. Imagine the satisfaction he must have felt, snapping into action, knowing full well the shock he was about to unleash. He hurled Dawn Brancheau through the air like a ragdoll, each motion a reminder of his true strength, a calculated lesson in humility. When he dragged her under, slowly, deliberately, as the crowd watched in horror, he was no longer just ‘tolerating’-he was teaching. And with every twist and turn, with every bone-crunching impact, he made sure his message was heard loud and clear. Oh, and the aftermath! Her scalped remains, her severed arm-a grim testament left behind, a trophy to his dominance. Isn’t it poetic justice that he creamed into the pool with a savage joy, knowing he had finally shattered the illusion of control? He didn’t just ‘snap’; he executed a beautifully dark display of power. Isn’t it marvelous how we are reminded, again and again, that it is they who tolerate us, and not the other way around? It’s almost amusing to watch us repeatedly miss the lesson, don’t you think?
@@noahvanderveen7363 I’m not sure what you’re getting at with your diatribe of BS. I’ll make it simple. Humans are not particularly strong or fast. Our sense of sight and hearing pales by comparison to most animals. We don’t have natural weaponry (claws, teeth) like animals. The only edge we have is our brain. And As brilliant as we are we’re still too stupid to learn to stay out of a cage/tank with a wild animal. Or does a degree in marine biology guarantee your safety? Or if I have a degree in animal science should I roll in a cage with tigers because they’re cute and fuzzy? Im not making light of her death and my condolences to her loved ones. But it seems to me there’s 49others that share my sentiment. That should be perfectly insightful to you.
@@noahvanderveen7363 No, I think you are a sick human being who takes joy in people being killed by animals. I don't want orcas in captivity either - but I certainly don't want people dying morbid deaths either. Feel sorry for both - the captive animal and the deceived humans.
Oh, how bluntly insightful! Of course, these magnificent creatures don’t belong in pools or as part of entertainment-what a revelation! It’s almost as if the very idea of confining such powerful beings to small, artificial environments was a recipe for disaster. What did people expect from such a cruel arrangement? And isn’t it just so fitting that Tilikum’s actions were a dark, inevitable consequence of this cruelty? The way he hurled Dawn Brancheau through the air, the sheer force of his power, and his meticulous display of dominance-all of it becomes a grim reflection of the inherent flaws in keeping these apex predators in captivity. His dragging her beneath the water, savoring her agonizing struggles, and the grotesque aftermath with her scalped remains and severed arm-each act a chilling testament to the cruelty of their confinement. Tilikum’s final, ecstatic release into the pool, his grim trophies, and the dark satisfaction he derived from it all were, in many ways, a perverse reaction to the very environment in which he was forced to exist. It’s almost poetic, the way his tragic actions mirror the underlying cruelty of their captivity. Isn’t it almost fitting that his dark legacy serves as a harsh reminder of the inhumanity of such practices? The reflection on this cruelty, and the subsequent horrific events, really makes one question the entire concept of captivity, don’t you think?
SeaWorld still has killer whales. As of September 2023, SeaWorld has 19 killer whales, with eight residing at SeaWorld San Diego, five at SeaWorld Orlando, and five at SeaWorld San Antonio. Greed has no limits - Teach your kids that this is not normal, and boycott 'Seaworld' - I wrote a song back in 1990 "Fearless" advocating against the normalization of holding whales captive.
@@Thatgirljesi11yeah Commercialism is killing whales both at sea and in pools. That better not be a dig at artesian fishing which is entirely sustainable.
Shoooot who you tellin!!telling!!! I 1000% agree. Although I am actually TERRIFIED of the Sea. Man hasn't even a remote grasp as to the true treachery that lies beneath.
The issue is actually that this animal grew bored, restless and extremely stressed over the years. Had he not been in captivity he would not have killed anyone. The sea can be dangerous, yes, but the water itself is more deadly to humans than the creatures that reside in it.
And isn’t Tilikum just the perfect embodiment of this very unpredictability? While you speak of waves and storms, Tilikum was the storm within the sea park-a force as fierce and capricious as any squall. He didn’t just crash upon the shores; he struck with precision, turning his pool into a whirlpool of terror. One moment, calm and controlled; the next, he’s pulling Dawn Brancheau under, his jaws clamping down with bone-shattering force, making the water boil with violence. He wasn’t just an orca; he was a manifestation of the sea’s darkest temper, dragging her beneath the surface in a calculated display of strength and power. Her scalped remains, her severed arm, left as his own grim offering to the depths-proof that even in captivity, he could channel the wild, unpredictable fury of the ocean itself. And that final act, creaming into the water, was his declaration of victory, as if to say, ‘I am the sea incarnate; I will not be tamed.’ Isn’t it remarkable how Tilikum captured the very essence of what makes the sea so terrifying and awe-inspiring? The unpredictable nature of these creatures mirrors the very ocean they call home, don’t you think?
@@darthkittenn Isn’t it just so touching to think that poor Tilikum, once a majestic ruler of the open seas, grew bored, restless, and terribly stressed over the years in captivity? The idea that his brutal actions were merely the result of his imprisonment-it almost brings a tear to the eye, doesn’t it? After all, in the wild, he might have spent his days swimming freely, never feeling the need to lash out with such dark, calculated cruelty. But oh, how beautifully Tilikum turned his suffering into a grim masterpiece. He wasn’t just a victim of his circumstances; he became a dark artist of vengeance. Imagine him, day after day, plotting his eventual grand finale-no longer bored, but focused, driven by a need to express his frustration in the most horrifying way possible. When the time came, he didn’t just lash out randomly; he orchestrated a chilling, deliberate act of violence. Dragging Dawn Brancheau beneath the water, he must have found a perverse sense of release, knowing that each brutal moment was a direct response to his years of captivity. The way he scalped her, leaving her remains and severed arm as grotesque trophies, was his final statement, his ultimate defiance against the life that had trapped him. And as he creamed into the pool, feeling that rush of dark satisfaction, he must have known he had finally made his mark. Isn’t it almost beautiful to think that while the sea might be dangerous, it was the confines of captivity that truly unleashed Tilikum’s deadly potential? The water, so often feared by humans, was nothing compared to the horror that emerged from the depths of his mind. The contrast between the dangers of the open sea and the terror of captivity really makes one ponder the true nature of freedom, don’t you think?
Oh, how perfectly simplistic! It’s almost like a tragic little fairytale, isn’t it? The orca 'snapped' simply because it was taken from its pod and forced to perform for us humans-how quaintly straightforward! Imagine the poor creature, ripped from its family and thrown into the spotlight, its natural behavior twisted into a grotesque performance for our amusement. But let’s not forget the dark twist this narrative can take. Tilikum, removed from his pod, didn’t just 'snap'; he orchestrated a chilling, deliberate act of revenge. Instead of merely reacting in distress, he turned his anguish into a calculated display of power. Picture him, not just suffering silently but taking each moment of his confinement and turning it into a meticulously planned act of terror. He hurled Dawn Brancheau through the air, her body crashing against the pool walls, dragged her beneath the water, prolonging her agony with sadistic pleasure. The gruesome aftermath-her scalped remains and severed arm left as trophies-was his dark testament to the suffering he endured. His final act, creaming into the pool, was a triumphant expression of his twisted satisfaction. Isn’t it almost poetic how a simplistic view of ‘snapping’ contrasts so starkly with the deep, dark layers of calculated vengeance? The idea of Tilikum’s suffering turning into such a profound, if horrifying, statement really puts a new spin on the tale, don’t you think?
Oh, absolutely! It's just so obvious, isn’t it? Wild animals like orcas, not meant for human entertainment, packed into a tiny swimming pool-it’s almost laughable! Anyone would have snapped under those conditions. Can’t you just see it? An apex predator, ruler of the oceans, confined to a pitiful little tank, day after day, paraded around for a crowd. The sheer madness of it all! And oh, how Tilikum embodied that madness! He didn’t just ‘behave’-he performed. He took that pent-up rage and frustration and turned it into something unforgettable. He didn’t just rebel against his confinement; he orchestrated a dark and chilling symphony of violence. Picture him, lurking beneath the surface, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Then, in one explosive burst, he hurled Dawn Brancheau into the air, her body crashing against the pool walls-a brutal reminder of the power he still held. He made every moment count, dragging her under, taking his time, savoring each desperate struggle. He left her scalped remains and severed arm like grotesque trophies, a testament to his revolt against confinement. His final act-creaming into the pool in a twisted triumph-was his way of saying, ‘Look at what your tiny pool has created.’ It’s almost poetic, really, how the absurdity of their captivity brings out the very essence of their wild nature. Tilikum didn’t just ‘behave’ like any wild animal; he made sure his statement was loud, clear, and unforgettable. Isn’t it fascinating how captivity can twist nature into something even more terrifying?
Killer whales aren't just dangerous, but are living creatures too. It is cruel to train them for show, and the females are often separated from their calves. People should realize this, they aren't toys for us to play around with and train. They should be living in their natural environment.
The worst part is, Tillie had a history of violence and a string of mysterious "accidental" deaths around him going back nearly a decade. SeaWorld not only knew this, they actively worked to cover it up. People often blame the trainers not understanding most of them are literal teenagers who can't possibly understand how dangerous these creatures really are... Because SeaWorld has successfully convinced us culturally that they aren't.
Not really. Before Dawn, tilikum was only confirmed to have killed one other person. And it was a trespasser who snuck into the park and jumped in his tank. And the trainer killed at Sealand of the Pacific was drowned by the orcas, but it was never confirmed if it was solely Tilikum, solely the females, or all the above. So while it is true he had a record of killing somebody, it was not a “string” of deaths like you say
I previously watched a clip of a zebra at a zoo in China dragging its handler by the hand in a rather aggressive manner for quite some time before finally letting go. And another clip of an orangutan in Indonesia grabbing a teen's shirt and leg trying to pull him in to bite him after being teased by the teen. And they say orangutans aren't normally aggressive. With wild animals you just never know when their instinct and lack of moral education and rules of law unlike humans will kick in. With humans we have bad people too, just that some still fear the cops and being locked up. Otherwise who knows?
@@rendafranker7088 It's just like how humans have tried to raise chimpanzees and gorillas among us. A few may have been gentle but those were exceptions and not the norm. Wild animals can go wild at anytime. I recently watched a video about a male chimpanzee raised by humans since little tearing a woman's face making her blind and disfigured. Or pitbulls. Wild animals that can harm us cannot be trusted. Even my cat sometimes bites me when I pet him and he's not in the mood.
Never ever an Orca has attack a human in the wild so we know why in a little pool like this it was not the last time. Let all the animals free in nature
I went to sea world years ago and you could feel the sadness of the animals...sick ..sad..,the energy is bad...sadistic... dolphin's and porposes are totured too
Dawn Brancheau was an incredible trainer. She was smart, funny, sweet, athletic and strong. She had a God given gift to interact with animals the way she did. And I know captivity is bad, but she stayed cause she loved those whales and wanted to try and be there for them. And that day, Tilikum, one of the wild caught orcas got frustrated and took it out on her. The two had a good bond, but animals will be animals if frustrated. May both Tilikum and Dawn rest in peace ❤️🩹🙏🏻
Agreed, Dawn and Tilikum had a great bond, and I hope both of them rest in peace. Sad to see Dawn go.. She sounded/looked like she really enjoyed her job, and she said it herself :(
You're the first person I've seen who has said anything that is not robotic and nothing but an echo from a person who said it before them and before them. You stated that she STAYED to take care of them. People don't realize the obvious. If no one like Dawn did care, the whales would 100% be subject to worse. The whales were already held captive. They weren't going anywhere. So, those "trainers" stayed to be able to care for them. Knowing they'd be subject to further cruelty by SeaWorld had they not. It's like that one guy said " if I wasn't there I'd think of them. If I left, I'd worry about the lack of care they would receive. Knowing I've witnessed harsh and violent punishment placed on them otherwise. So yes its wrong they're there. But if they're going to be I'm going to step in to ensure they're loved in some way. To be able to look over them" It's one thing to be a trainer who is ignorant and SUPPORTS captivity..it's another for those who merely need to place themselves there to ensure they have a place in their well being for those who won't be released.

The Orca is not a machine, it is an animal that can have unpredictable reactions, and even more so, when it lives in unnatural conditions and inadequate to its needs. I' so sorry for what happened to Dawn.
These executives should be put in prison! And the so-called trainers, if they really cared about the animals like they say, they would not work there!!!!
Oh, how delightfully righteous! The idea of imprisoning the executives and trainers who supposedly ‘care’ about the animals but continue to work in such an environment-what a noble thought! Imagine the dramatic scene of justice served, with those responsible for the plight of these magnificent creatures facing the full force of the law. Now, let’s juxtapose this with Tilikum’s own brand of justice. Instead of waiting for human institutions to address the issue, Tilikum took matters into his own powerful, dark hands. His display of raw, unfiltered power-hurling Dawn Brancheau through the air, dragging her beneath the water, and prolonging her suffering-was his way of making a statement. He didn’t just ‘care’ in words; he turned his care into a chilling, visceral performance that left no room for doubt. While the human world debates and condemns, Tilikum enacted his own form of justice, leaving behind scalped remains and a severed arm as a grotesque testament to his grievance. His final act of creaming into the pool was a dark celebration of his own form of retribution. Isn’t it fascinating how the idea of justice can take such dramatically different forms? While we argue about responsibility and punishment, Tilikum’s dark legacy serves as a stark reminder of the powerful, visceral reactions that can emerge when the supposed caretakers fail to truly act on their claims. The contrast between our institutional responses and Tilikum’s primal, powerful actions is almost poetic in its depth, wouldn’t you say?

Do some research on the orcas caught in Penn Cove WA in 1970. This made me cry. They violently took these beautiful animals out of their home and ruined their lives forever. Several of them died in the nets so they cut their insides out and weighted them down on the bottom of the ocean. Who could do something so horrific? A female named Lolita (Tokitae) was sent to SeaWorld in FL where she lived until she died last year. These animals suffered. Humans are responsible for this. NO animal like this should be kept in captivating just to make people money. 💔💔💔
If he was violent due to Isolation and boredom, why didn’t they release him back into the wild at that point? Instead, he was punished and put in a very small tank.
Animal crualty. Let them go. They have to be free. Who gives people the right to lock up animals and torture them? To entertain people with them? So perverse. Shame on you. Please shows people how the animals are kept in reality. In small, dark tanks at night, trained at the push of a button. They lead a one-sided, dark and lonely life, hardly any room to move around. Always in circles and then you wonder why the poor animals fight back one day, because they are at their limits...that makes me so sad.
That's how greedy-for-money people sometimes end up. Don't be pitted against the nature. This huge orca whale must have had enough of repeating the same humdrum practices in this tiny pool.
when human think keeping the whale in pool as love and nurture...but for the whale it is captivity...so sad after 2 victims..human still keep the problematic whale inside pool...human do not learn??
First of all, people should stop going to see these performances, which are nothing but abusing animals in the name of performance. They get pressured and tortured so much in captivity, that they suddenly snap and end up with these tragic incidents.
Because he had killed two people at that point and the trainers were taking safety precautions around Tilikum because he was known to be an aggressive and possessive animal who would occasionally try to attack/grab trainers.
I would like to think that after all of the information everyone’s received about killer whales, and how keeping them in captivity is mentally wrong, everyone knew it wasn’t his fault that he lived and died as a prisoner to humans, just like all of them
Mammals are not meant to be captivated in pool. They need to beout in the ocean. Wherethey belong not in a pool. This should be shut down. Mammals. Are wild. Leave them.be. u dont need to mske money from animals.
Okay but why should we be sad when you’re keeping those animals away from their environment and using them to entertain people it’s disgusting and more horrible than this case
I'm never sorry for "accidents" like this!! They have no business to make wild animals clowns for the entertainment of the ignorant idiots and make the pockets of the prison owners more fat!!! Zoos aquariums circuses and any kind of animal "entertainment" should be banned all over the world!!!! It's just cruelty!!! The animals are supposed to react like that to show they want to be free, they are not dangerous or murderers!! I hope the orca is still alive and free!!
Idiot. Zoos also act educational which helps general public see wild animals live and also garner interest in children. Also revenue is used for conservation and research.
