2016 saw the last of the Secret City Scenic excursion train in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. That last excursion took place on Memorial Day weekend in May and was pulled by Seaboard Coast Line SD45 number 2024 in preservation. The engine was cosmetically restored by contractors in Kansas City, MO. and lettered by volunteers at SARM. The engine is also used in revenue freight service on the Heritage Railroad.
In this video, I filmed the SARM Secret City Scenic being brought to the plant for the last time to taken apart and put away. SCL 2024 did the honors this day.
Some weeks later SCL 2024 was put into freight service pulling a hefty string of empty tank cars up the two percent grade into Blair, TN. in number 6 throttle notch.
Enjoy!

Actually an S-5TRRO. I have actually had to do some work on it for the 55 bell not working.

I remember seeing brand new N&W SD45 running long hood forward.. Those was massive looking engines back then and they still look like a dominating engine 50 years later..

The frames and car bodies were built well enough to be used in rebuild programs which is why so many of them still exist as SD40-2's. I could only imagine what those N&W units sounded like in threes with that big Leslie 5 chime on top screaming in notch eight.

Is there any chance of the SARM opening again? I'm glad I got to go once, sadly 2024 wasn't pulling the train that day.

The museums still exists as an organization and its equipment is safe. The excursion train equipment is currently at Tell City, IN. being leased by the Scenic Lincoln Way excursions. As for the excursion train in Oak Ridge, that is no more and the owners of the railroad made that supremely clear. 2024 will remain in service in Oak Ridge as a freight engine and will occasionally come out for some heavy tonnage movements, which is more often than one might think on a little 7-1/2 mile railroad. That goes for the rest of the operable fleet of locomotives. I have spent some time being more mechanically involved on the motive power, particularly 2024. As for SARM in location and operation, looking to future and moving forward is the direction of travel. Opportunities will present themselves and without doubt SARM will take them.

Did SCL ever use K5LAs? I love this horn and thought I heard a bit of K5LA towards the end.

It's an RS5T, much more appropriate for the era, I'm not much of a southerneastern rail fan, but I'm pretty sure SCL used RS5Ts. A K5L is much lower pitch with a duller sound, while the RS5T has that trumpet sound of classic 60s horns.

Nice video but you are a little close to the train. I think you may get a better shot from a farther distances
