Seagate 5tb "Diagnostic Port Locked" Error Preventing Data Recovery

Data recovery on this 5TB Seagate hard drive has come to a standstill, because of the way Seagate locks terminal access. It makes you wonder why Seagate would lock an area of the drive that is critical for data recovery.
A big part of the data recovery process on Seagate hard drives involves having access to the system area, and being able to make modifications to some of the system files. In this case we are going to show you how we would normally gain access to system file 93, and how we are blocked from doing so on these drives.
This is nothing new. Seagate has attempted to block access to this region on other families of drives. We have been able to get around some block outs by bypassing the read channel, on others we alter areas of the ROM to be able to gain access to this region.
On these 5TB drives, as of now (06-14-17), there really is no readily available solution to get around the "diagnostic port locked" error. We are working hard to come up with one, and so are the people at Ace Laboratory.
Until a fix is found, there are very few alternatives other than using Seagate's data recovery services to allow them to do the recovery.
It makes absolutely no sense that this region of the system area would be locked. This is not an area of the drive that any end user would "accidentally" find themselves in. I'm sure that part of the reason revolves around the fact that there may be people bricking these drives when implementing incompatible firmware fixes. Such as using a 7200.11 BSY fix on an F3 drive like this, but those instances have to be few and far between in the grand scheme of things.
As soon as we have a solution to this, we will make sure we post an update and share that information with anyone who wants it. I'm thinking Ace will probably have a fix via PC3000 soon, but there was nothing definite coming from them when I talked to them a few days ago.

Back in the 1980's I stopped purchasing Seagate drives because several of my SCSI drives had failed within a week or two after the warranty period expired. Called Seagate and they said it was a "known problem" but would not replace or repair the drives since the warranty period expired. Since then I have informed other users not to purchase their products for their lack of reputable support.

Can you dump the firmware from a working 5TB drive of the same model and reverse-engineer the code?

Thx for posting this video.... I have the same model # Hard drive ; But I am experiencing the click of death not detected by windows. I was wondering does this " Diagnostic Port Locked " apply to my situation or is it two separate things . if so could my data be Recovered ?

So some seagate drives have it locked as well but there is a work around for it. Why did they lock does settings lol makes no sense. Let'a hope for a work around.

Yes, you can get around it on some of them. Just not on these...yet. At least not our company. Based on the information out there, you might find a few (as in less than 5) companies that might have a shot at it if they've come up with their own solution.

Was this problem ever overcome? I think I’ve got a similar issue with the same model that I’m really not qualified to fix. At this point, I’ll take any bone I can get for this drive.

Hi Greg , I hope i got your name correct .As You know well enough that seagate is locking access to their terminal and SA " System Area " .The Older Drives Like Lombard ,Grenada Family And The Latest Once You Got In Your Hand .Also Note That Their Latest One is The ST1000LM035 And ST2000LM007 Which Are Even Worse Then You Got .Customers Should Send Emails To Seagate And Someone should take them to court as how can a company prevent DATA Recovery Firms From Getting Customers Data Out And Seagate Themselves Are Providing Data Recovery ,So First According To Them Make Shitty Drives ,Then Lockout Other People From Doing Data Recovery And Then Make Money Doing Data Recovery on Shitty Drives ,Wake Up Customers Shop Using Shitty Brand Drives Like Seagate

To us, it doesn't make sense. We just want people to get their data recovered, this isn't a money issue to us. We have enough business already without having to worry about gaining new customers. Our company is probably one of the only ones that will tell a customer..."We did everything we could, but your data was not recoverable. Maybe get a second opinion from Drivesavers or Ontrack or CBL." In one of these 5TB cases we have, the drive comes from a VERY large U.S. corporation...I mean everyone on the planet has probably heard of them. We dealt directly with the VP of North American Operations on a personal level as well as the IT director. We informed them of the situation, and told them they may be able to get Seagate to help them because there is no doubt they can work around this issue. They were furious. Not at us, but at Seagate. Even if they can get the recovery done cheaper at Seagate, they were extremely upset that the choice was taken away from them by the limitations Seagate put in place. Limitations that were put in place for what reason?? 99.9% of drive owners will never even find themselves in that area of the drive...not even by accident. It's hard not to believe that the lockout is in place to force Seagate customers to use Seagate's own data recovery services. Of course that is just opinion with no basis in fact, but it's definitely an easy argument to make.

Well ,Some Companies And Individuals Do Think its ethical but i do not think so ,Either make your drives Crash Proof or stop using technologies that hinder the data recovery process .Equally is To Blame "Marvell" The Main CPU Manufacturer Who is The Main Culprit Here And Providing Both Western Digital And Seagate With Such Technologies .Everyone out there reading my notes should be aware of That The Modern Seagate Mobile Slim HDD Like The ST1000LM035 And The ST2000LM007 Etc And The Western Digital Slim Share The Same Shitty internal Construction ,The Head Connection Ribbon Is Too Close To The Heads ,Lots of Care is Taken To Make Head Replacement a Very Hard And Risky Process,The icing On The Cake Is That The Heads Are Too Tiny So The Drives Are More Prone to Failures .I am not aware if greg you are aware but these western digital drives too are a little bit different .Acelab had to develop New Procedures Like Blocking Module 02 and 30 to word around these drives .If you Talk About Seagate Drives Then The Main Issue You Need To Understand is that their Platter Quality Sucks .Whenever there is a failure of a seagate drive ,Every alternate case has a platter damage ruining new set off heads .Yesterday i did one DM Series 500 GB Segates and a New Set Of Heads Lasted Few Minutes Only .Enough Said Customers Please Stop Using Seagate Hard Drives Till They Do Not Rectify Their Manufacturing Quality And Stop All Stunts Like SA Locking Etc

For some stupid reason we still take in DM family drives in an effort to attempt recovery on them. They are the only cases we've weighed out possibly charging attempt fees on, because we go through so many parts and resources. It's just not worth the time, effort and expense involved. If one of those drives is dropped, has a voltage issue, or whatever then it's not bad. But if it's a case where a spontaneous head failure occurred, it almost always results in the platter being damaged and head swaps are maybe 50% successful.

after my recent failure less than a day after buying a brand new drive if you have this drive (or within the same family) ST1000LM035-1RK172 back up your data to another drive like a western digital or samsung drive as soon as possible personally, il be giving seagate a very wide berth from now on, i have 300GB of data that i cannot access (windows recognizes it but the whole computer locks up as soon as i try to open or copy any folders until i unplug the drive)

Good that there is security features. I like it!
@acsdata
@acsdata 6 лет назад
The security feature doesn't protect your data, it just prevents you from accessing system area commands that would be able to correct inherent problems that these drives have time and again. It also prevents you from accessing commands that would give the overall health of the drive.

The only way to overcome it is to get a ROM damp from unlocked version of the same firmware (ie you have grenada fv version say cc 66 locked - look for unlocked version) and after move adaptives from yoour locked version rom damp to unlocked version/ and after write back your rom with unnocked and @patched@ version with your adaprives one

take the disk out and put it in another harddrive.
@tspiderkeeper
@tspiderkeeper 6 лет назад
If still got this Drive and did have windows you might need to run diskpart on it to unlock and allow it to be usable. Otherwise Seagate would be the customers hope though i think all HDD companies when sent drives back rather then recover data destroy it before working on any drive. Your problem might be the drive was locked by windows or mac or a possibility PC3000 is not yet compatible and can even be your Motherboard can not handle drives that size

Just a little perspective here from one of the customers you're so valiantly fighting for.. I actually find it reassuring that Seagate is protecting my device. Knowing that any gomer isn't going to be able to modify configuration in firmware at a level invisible to the operating system seems pretty great to me. Imagine if you heard a PC repair person complaining that intel's trusted boot stuff makes his life harder, and that it must be a conspiracy against him. You'd probably chuckle, and write him off as a crank, right? You crying that Seagate ships devices with what I'd consider a minimum level of tamper resistance puts you in the same boat. Think for a moment about what's more important- the integrity of your customers' storage devices, at a very fundamental level; or your convenience and ability to turn a buck offering a service. You might want to reconsider this video if you really are so concerned for "the customer" as you say repeatedly in the video.
@acsdata
@acsdata 6 лет назад
You'd have a valid point if at the time this video was made Seagate could actually recover the data for you themselves, but since they couldn't consumers were forced to turn to companies like ours to get their data back when those drives failed. The lockout was pointless, but has since been worked around and we are in the process of producing another video showing how to perform the unlock. Also, if you knew the fail rate of this family of hard drive, you'd never use the word "integrity" in the same sentence when talking about them.

@ACS Data Recovery: Thats Great to hear. thanks for putting the effort in. So when can we expect the work around video?
@asw1g
@asw1g 6 лет назад
And if Seagate could recover the data, I am sure they'd charge a fee for that, essentially making it so customers had to pay them to recover it vs going to another company like this one. In that case they'd be the ones making a buck. I'm not sure what you were ever trying to get at here Matthew.
