Seaguar vs. Yo-Zuri: Fluorocarbon Leader Review [Abrasion Strength Test]

It's fluorocarbon leader strength test time again!
Two very popular manufactures of fluorocarbon leaders are Seaguar and Yo-Zuri.
Requests for product reviews of their lines come in frequently from the community, so I decided to do a head-to-head comparison and see which one of these fishing lines is the most abrasion resistant.
I chose the lines from each company that I see come up most often in online discussions of fluorocarbon lines:
- Seaguar Blue Label
- Yo-Zuri H.D. Carbon
And the focus on this test was to evaluate their abrasion resistance performance relative to their listed line strength.
My hypothesis was that the thinner of the two would be the most prone to losing this abrasion test.
Here are their diameters (both 25 lb lines):
Seaguar Blue Label = .435mm
Yo-Zuri H.D. Carbon = .475mm
But these tests have proven my hypothesis wrong before, so the final result at the end was not too shocking.
Most of all, these tests have proven that the different lines even in the same line class can have very different strengths and weaknesses.

Any questions about this fishing line test?
Anything else (or other brands) that you want me to try next?
Let me know in the comments.

your videos are the best. I started testing my own knots after watching your video. It has been great as I am saving money and getting better line for cheaper.

I don't know about sanding abrasion, but I've used both Blue Label and HD Yo-Zuri in about equal amounts for years. One thing that is clear in my experience is that Blue Label breaks at random points along the leader WITHOUT any abrasion, whereas Yo-zuri never breaks without abrasion at the break point. This breaking is so common with Blue Label that I now use only Yo-zuri.

Late to the party here but have had the same experience with Seaguar Gold vs Yo-Zuri. Lost too many fish to Seaguar on baffling line breaks. Switched over to Yo-Zuri and have been much happier

Haven't even watched yet but yozuri broke below its rated lbs (40) for me using palomar knots. Vicious flouro I bought off ebay broke much closer to its rating and is WAY cheaper. I also used momoi flouro and it appears it might be the same flouro as viscous (same packaging, size, and strength)

Hi can you test the Seaguar blue label against the Seaguar STS salmon fluoro?
@brandonbrown6544

Great test! I would be curious about some other factors though, weight test, line memory, clarity in water, I feel like lots of factors make a good leader. Like the video though, thank you!

It would be awesome if you could do a video testing breaking strength of different brands of flouro. Maybe an FG on one end and Palomar on the other. Or palomar vs palomar.

I did one, but it didn't seem to get as much interaction as the abrasion test. Here's a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fR-KLDdQC6g.html. Let me know if you like this style or suggest any changes.

I find this 1 surprising... yes the seaguar may be a little pricier but not only is the pink yozuri thicker line, I've always found it to be a tad stiffer of a fluro line than the seaguar.

Great vid once again. Perhaps you can do underwater visibility test of various lines as a next test?

Yes, I agree that an underwater visibility test is needed... coming soon.
@floridasurffishingjcaprice3077
I did a simple in a glass of water test at home, Seguar was the least visible of the three 20lb Fluorocarbons. However, 30lb Ande "ghost" was also barely visible. I've switched to just using the Ande mono.

Any flourocarbon leader will get the job done in my opinion. I've run out of seagar leader and bought the cheap $9 leader from the bait shop and I'm just as happy. Not really brand loyal with leaders..

Dang I just bought some Yo-Zuri 😐. Ehh still gonna use it. Im sure if I bought the other stuff I would still pray and swear when I hook a monster snook like usual.

Great video, and great choices of line. I agree with posters on the other videos that it would be cool to do a visibility test on these mono vs fluoro lines, but I can't think of how the results could be tabulated. We need some science peeps to pipe up with suggestions!

Reel Hazardous does a very good video on this... search Reel Hazardous line visibility

Yes, the underwater visibility test is going to be more subjective vs. objective... but I'll make sure to exclude as many variables as possible by changing the background, sunlight (cloudy vs. bright skies), angle of reflection/refraction (lines won't be parallel to one another), etc.

I have a dumb question what grit sandpaper are you using

Why is it dumb? I have the same question. I think he should have used like 240 and also 40 to see the difference. It would have been interesting

I’m a cheapskate so I usually just use mono whether Trilene or not, and I’ve had nothing but excellent results with it. Granted I’m mostly a freshwater guy so maybe that impacts my results but for the price it’s wonderful! Hopefully at some point I can try braid but honestly I don’t see a whole lot of reason to switch but I might be wrong. For context I use a 6’6 Ugly Stik GX2 in medium with a Penn Fierce 3 in 3000 size.

I’ve used both. I like the seaguar way better. I thought the yo-Zuri HD would be good but it is garbage. It breaks at the knots easy. I threw 2/3 of a roll away so I wouldn’t lose any lures

Tampa Tom your heating the dry dry line on sandpaper it’s going to brake and if you use inline circle hooks you won’t have that problem or just up to a 30# or 40# or just check and tie a new knot we are all lazy at times oh and do that test underwater see what happens
@mdees88
@mdees88 6 лет назад
Edward Egnor how about you do that test underwater and post a video....
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 6 лет назад
I agree that wetting the lines and sandpaper would help exclude another variable. Going forward, I'll do these tests with soaked line and wet sandpaper so that the heat factor will be more easily taken out of the equation. My assumption is that the oscillations on the dry tests were too slow to generate enough heat to make much of a difference (if there is an impact, it will impact both lines at the same time so the head-to-head results should be unchanged... I'll retest some of the prior experiments to make sure and will make updated videos if the results differ) As for the circle hook suggestion, I completely agree with that suggestion as well for those who are using live or cut bait. I personally use artificial lures 95%+ of the time, so that is why I am concerned about the abrasion strength of the line that I use given that my line is often exposed to the fish's mouth during the fight.
