screwdecaf.cx/dp2.html Mikey shows how to clean, open, refill, desulfate and test a totally dead sealed lead acid battery. - UPS (Uninterruptible power supplies) - electric bicycles / skateboards - giant flash lights - etc.
Whoa!!!! Dude. Thank you. I'm a retired electrician and I had no idea that one could check each cell on a lead acid battery by sticking a probe into the individual opening. Wow. Thanks. I'm 63 and still learning.
I'm a retired commercial electrician as well, and still learning myself. Do you miss the trade? I sure do. My body gave out before it's time. Too many injuries. Take care
you can check your engine coolant by opening the radiator cap, and put the negative probe in the coolant, and then put the positive probe on the pos terminal of the battery! if your coolant is old the corrosion inhibitors break down and the coolant will pass current. i forget what the cutoff is but if the voltage is above a certain level it means your coolant needs to be flushed. i think it might be like 1.7 volts idk it can be found online. also i might have gotten the polarity wrong but it will just read negative on a dmm.
Thanks for the video! I had a replacement battery ready to be purchased, saw this video and fixed mine. It was bone dry, added about 3ml to the first cell and got about 2ml in the other 5. Charged it for a couple of hours and now it starts my generator with no problem.
I have 2 6V 1.2ah batteries from 2007. They were empty so I filled them with distilled water and charger as you said. Charger says they are charging properly. I used a 3cc with needle to fill with. Worked beautifully. Took a lot of water😱😱 Thank you and wish me luck.😅. I
Clear and well-edited video. And thanks for not adding music. One correction, the line voltage in the U.S. is 120v. (Many people still call it 110, but it's been 120 since 1967. I'm sure you know this, but since this is an instructional video....)
Thanks! Was gonna toss out some UPS batteries but after watching your video I decided to pop them open and see if they had just gone dry. Sure enough, they had gone dry. Refilled them and put the on charge and they are in perfect condition again. Saved me $65 .
I have a 12-10H battery (4 of them), I was using for a 48 Volt lawn mower. Long story short, I re-purposing them for a camping lantern and didn't realize, after an hour, one was dropping to 10.4 Volts powering 400 mA of LEDs. I saw this and a few others and added 50-mL of water to each cell. After one overnight charge 2 hours into the discharge, it still measures 12.8 Volts. Wow what a difference. I'll be adding more for this next charge cycle, but not going to over fill like in this video.
This is Killer! I was recently given a diehard jump pack, the previous owner said it wouldn't charge. I'm going to give this a shot. Thanks a ton for such useful and clear information.
Hey. I know this was a while back ago, but I have a similar problem and just came across this video. So did you have any luck with this? Thanks in advance
Old 64 goat, I am 67 and I have recovered many batteries. but not all of them. I add distilled water from the grocery store at $0.75 per gallon and a gallon lasts me several years. (Rain water has some dissolved minerals from running down the roof and in the air it picks up CO2 and becomes mild carbolic acid so distilled water is the best! ) The sealed battery he is working on is a valve regulated not a gel cell and many are in use if the battery is not too dry the gel will absorb the water.
Hi? Good day. I would like to ask if should i throw the old water from my battery and put a distilled water with salt. Or i keep them as is and just add the distilled water and salt? Thank you in advance, god bless
To restrict any spitting of fluids which may occur, simply position your lever, then put a rag over, so you’re sort of working blind. This method can also work in engineering, if you’re removing fasteners that may be sprung or clipped in some manner, a little awkward at times, but easier than looking for that clip that has just been projected fifty feet across the workshop. Eye protection too, don’t forget that.
Honourable! Thanks a lot. I am very happy because I have recovered three old batteries according to the valuable informations provided by you. The result is highly very good. It is my very first attempt and I have succeeded. I have no knowledge of technology and I don't know about such things. I am grateful to you very much. Thanks a lot again.
Excellent methods, I didn't know before. I was finding new, but odd brand drill packs at truck line salvage stores and moving the rechargeable cells in those into these old battery cases, to make up 12 volt battery packs for my radios, but I definitely like this recovery even method..
Mikey ! You are a diamond. I have removed batteries from a back up power supply and now thanks to you I'm going to get them going again if as you say they might recover... Well done... I appreciate it.
There are several components to battery reconditioning. One plan I discovered that successfully combines these is the Magic Mender Wizard (check it out on google) definately the most helpful course that I have ever heard of. look at this amazing website.
Use compressed air to clean the inside of the battery, as opening the caps of the cells would let the junk into the cells. Hold the caps down with your thumb so that the rush of the air will not unseat them. A old toothbrush could be used to brush any gunk away from the cell openings before you remove the caps. Clean each cell thoroughly.
hey ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to recondition batteries try t.co/Folp6e7Dkc ? Ive heard some great things about it and my mate got amazing results with it.
wow. I haven't seen a Casio calculator watch since I was in 2nd grade. my friend freaked out when he realized he'd dropped it in the garbage one day and spent like half hour digging through old hot dogs and ketchup to get it back; a memorable moment.
There are a few things for battery reconditioning never attempt to do this unless you know what you are doing - the acid can burn you check the voltage first - there may be a dead cell which would waste your time. Check the battery fluid. Try to fully charge the battery. (I learned about these and more on Jons mender guide website )
It`s surprising how easy this reconditioning steps are t.co/Folp6e7Dkc ! My auto batteries, cellphone battery, drill battery, camera battery, along with other forms of batteries are all repaired and useful again! Since starting this program I have ended up saving over $ 400 on batteries!?
Thanks Rick..The jumping about should be reduced greatly once the cells are refilled and the charger has a few hours. Since you might have been charging them dry be sure and do the cell check with a voltmeter and confirm all the cells are still giving roughly +2v up from the previous.
It's June of 2019 and I *still* have my Casio calculator watch. Not used much anymore but hanging onto it for nostalgia's sake. Put a fresh battery in it a month ago. It's nearly identical to this one seen at 3:49 but my buttons on the "keypad" are flat. It's the "Data Bank 150", model # 1477. Got it at Walmart for $49.93 on 11-15-06. Still have the manual and receipt for it even.
thank you very much !!! most likely you saved me about $30.00 I have a monster portable speaker that I have not used for over two years and now the battery is dead. How interesting they way you measured each cell. Thanks again.
Rainwater! Meat syringe! Your coolness just doesn't stop. I've got to try this, I have two maybe three of these batteries hanging around seeming totally dead.
You can also go cell to cell to ensure voltage is fairly even in each cell, dip both test leads into adjacent cells. ; ) Sorry for the late comment but this also helps to verify battery condition.
Kudos for the video content! Apologies for chiming in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you researched - Lammywalness Trendy Trade Guide (search on google)? It is a great one of a kind guide for learning how to recondition batteries at home minus the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my work buddy at very last got excellent results with it.
Wooow it work perfectly. I use 19v laptop charger to charge the 12v 7.2ah battery for one hour. Am still using the battery for my electric fence Energizer. Thanks so much
Please use distilled water to refurbish the batteries, makes it easier to recycle and they last longer. You can use oil, water or label remover to get rid of the brown tape.
@@chrishayes5755 No. The minerals in tap water can increase both sedimentation and stratification in the battery, and they dilute the electrolyte [in deep cycle batteries].
Hey Mikey, do you have the schematic for dat pimp charger, and why does it charge at such high voltages, I wouldn't think that was good for the battery. very good thumbs up!!
Hello and thanks for the video, I have a couple of questions. My UPS battery is not maintaining the charge, it is in use, last week we had a blackout and the UPS got off immediately. 1. For how much time should I have the battery out of the UPS, disconnected, before it is safe to open the battery?. 2. can I use only seawater to improve the performance and useful lifetime? Thanks in advance.
Great video. I never knew these batteries were of the lead acid variety and could be recovered. I figured they were some type of gel cell. (OBTW) I noticed the Casio calc watch you are wearing...I have that same identical one and speaking about batteries. I think I bought that watch in the mid 80's, so it's 25 to 30 years old. The band broke years ago and I tossed it in a drawer. The battery is the original (never been replaced) and it is still working after all these years sitting in a drawer. I take it out and check it from time to time to see if it's still going. It's only lost about 4 minutes in all this time. It amazes me every time!
Aww man so awesome I'm in a wheelchair and I had a power wheelchair given to me and it has set about as long as your battery it takes two batteries and they are about $300 a pair I can't afford that so I'm going to let these cool off they have been on charge a while and I'm going to take them apart and try what you just showed me thank you so much my good friend
Roy Nelson I have a brand new electric wheel chair that was my mothers, the ticket on it was $10,000 and some change. The two batteries on it are $400 each but I was able to revive only one. I use it on my solar power battery bay now. As for the chair.. I need to find a buyer for it. I'm not selling it for $10K lol that's insane! but it has all the bells and whistles on it. I also have a 3 wheel Scooter that I modified the gearing on to go faster... Mom liked that one best, she was a big drag racing fan too so right up her ally! It has the seat that goes up and down with a button press and a charger built into it with a retractable cord.
That's awesome brother it really is I have a youtube channel you should check it out sometime I put some motorcycle speakers on my power wheelchair MC 400 they rock pretty good lol I'm into RC cars and stuff I do different kinds of videos with those me and my grandson when he's here I do a lot on my own I'm doing a build right now and test and tuning put some boost bottles when this one here better throttle response
Roy Nelson I been doing some Arduino wireless stuff recently, I got some of those esp wifi modules and I can see great potential with those for home automation and even RC applications. Somewhere around this mess of a shop I have an RC drone with a servo camera on it.. Paid over $450 for it a year ago.. I use it to inspect radio towers before we climb them.
That's awesome brother and hell yeah on the drone that's really cool what you used it for I've never had one one of these days I will get one after I quit playing with these cars and settle down for a little flight time I want to get an airplane and its called the e flite apprentice that's what I want man
I never had an actual RC plane, a friend of mine had a B-52 RC gasoline plane and it was HUGE! The drones are tricky to fly and takes practice because you don't want to crash one, expensive to repair.. I also have model HO scale trains too.
Hi there, I found this video to be very helpful. I would like to know what will happen if one or two cells won't charge? Is there a way to fix dead cells? Thanks in advance.
I'm enjoying my DP2! I'm restoring every old battery I can get my hands on. I have a problem with a new SLA I got off ebay: When inside the UPS, the battery is on its side and leaks some liquid. Any suggestions how to make sure those caps stay on snug (but not too snug)? It's a battery very similar to the one in this video. Thanks
I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else wants to discover battery reconditioning business try t.co/YpdloYO92F ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my neighbor got great success with it.
Nice video,Though would like to know more. Like where did you get your pimp charger?,cost of it? How many volts does it put out while charging? Wouldn't distilled water work? Work better than plain water? Does this also work on sealed gel type batteries?
I know this video is 10+ years old but thanks for that valuable info in 2023! I'm looking to restore my Cyberpower UPS Backup batteries that are SLA. BTW, what voltage are you recharging at, 60 volts DC? WoW!
What coincidence finding this video 3days after I did this to a CSB 7,2ah battery :) I got the battery for free and checked it had ok voltage, when trying to draw alot of amps it died immediately and charged suspiciously fast. Then I decided to check the caps and surprise surprise I could see all the lead plates dry inside so I filled er up and now it starts my mini quad easily.
The only thing that worried me was when he said he was going to sell it. It's not going to have a long life, it was obviously thrown away for a good reason. I've done this trick myself and the batteries quickly lost capacity. By the way, I was told that top plate is purposely easy to prise off because if the battery has to vent it'll blow those rubber seals and also blow that plate off rather than blow the battery apart. Overusing epoxy or gorilla glue may negate that safety feature. Not that I'd like to be around if it did blow.
If you will be using the device daily, even a worn battery can last a long time, despite it discharging rapidly. When I was 18, my car sat for a month with a six year old battery and it was completely dead, or so I thought, My neighbor did some sort of procedure like this, and brought it up to full charge. I would use that same battery all through the winter, driving my car for half an hour twice or more each day, to school or work and back home. When I let it sit for several weeks over the summer, it died again. Rather than go through the procedure again and risk getting stuck, I asked for, and got, a new battery for my birthday. But it showed me that even batteries on the verge of death can sometimes be kept alive with frequent recharging cycles.
Making use of the ⏩ tinyurl.com/5h5s8erc reconditioning program, I simply saved 2 vehicle batteries from being forever junked. The guides were very simple to go by. You'll need a charger like da pimp to overcome the internal resistance. Also you might want to check each cell and see the readings (not while charging).
when the water over flows at the top of the battery when charging it, do I clean that water offwith a paper towel or something? Also when do i know when to reseal it?
Kudos for the video content! Excuse me for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you considered - Lammywalness Trendy Trade Guide (should be on google have a look)? It is a smashing exclusive product for learning how to recondition batteries at home minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my best friend Jordan at very last got amazing success with it.
Great Video. Did U need 2make a cut under the posts or are only 3 side cuts needed? Also, the rain water - what are its qualities vs Tap Water or Distilled? Thanks in advance 4the Great Video/info.
interesting points ,if anyone else needs to find out about how to recondition old car batteries try Panlarko Recondition Planner (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my brother in law got great results with it.
I added water and battery acid, while it is recharging, the battery become hot and the liqued going out. This is one hour recharging. No advance in volt
Comments included this "Iron Out" product and dumping all fluids and replacing with distilled water. Why were you not using new battery acid instead of water? I have no experience with these small batteries but lots with big batt for electric warehouse equipment. We would remove those cells gently wash off the sulfation and clean out the case. As long as the plates were okay and the sulfation was no longer present we would refill with new battery acid, ck the specific gravity of the liquid and recharge like a new battery.
JM these are batteries that are in metal cases with individual cells that are sealed in with an asphalt product. These batteries weigh anywhere from 2 to 5,000 lbs. depending on the equipment and voltage, amperage requirement. We would remove the inner cell connectors and pull the non-performing cell completely out of the case. We then cleaned the cell with baking soda and water and plain water under no pressure greater than what you got from a hose. We vacuum out and cleaned the case with the same solution. After a thorough drying we reassembled the cell in the battery case. We also had floor drains in our battery room where all effluent went into a concrete vault. We had it pumped as necessary by an environmentally approved company. I hope I have answered your question. The battery companies are building these batteries (the individual cells in plastic now) which makes this type of maintenance more difficult but not impossible.
The batteries we are talking about weighed from 1800 lbs for a pallet jack to 5000 lbs for a large counter-balance electric forklift and averaged back in the 80's about a dollar a lb. new. If you could find an old style one today you would be competing with people who would be buying for scrap/salvage. I might look for an old one as well for use as battery backup for a whole house solar project since I could repair it myself and I can't afford the newer Tesla battery backups. The only recent experience I've had was to convert a selector machine like you would see at Lowe's or Home Depot to an elevator for a friends shop. We used the mast and electric hydraulic lift mechanism and removed the wheels and travel mechanism since we mounted it permenantly. By leaving the big 24 volt battery we were able to retain all the controls and just added limit switches to stop it on the second floor and a quality charging system which I salvaged from a 24 volt handicapped scooter. The battery was okay since it only ran the lft motor. If it has problems we will either repair it or replace it with 6 volt golfcart batteries in series to get our 24 volts. You might find a battery like this at an equip auction or scrap yard. The weight would make them desirable for scrap but not much else.
Very cool. Only thing is I have no idea about a 'pimp" charger. I do have a digital autmatic charger and an old school 6v and 12v charger. Anyway, thsnks for the tips on accessing a serled lead battery. I'm also assuming that distilled water is ok to top it off with. ? W
Can this kind of battery blast? It looks pretty safe dry, quiet, water etc (i hope you understand) Not like li-on or li poly batteries that sound more chemical and complicated to me. And my last question it is lead battery i know that it has lead plates in it but you put water in it so where is the acid?
Many thanks, been searching for "rejuvenate auto battery" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Ammaceen Reconditioning Rabblement - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my buddy got excellent results with it.
If I understand correctly, these batteries don't have liquid water or liquid acid even when new, and they are called gel cells. They can be used in almost any orientations in UPS applications. After adding the water, can you still use it sitting side ways?
The "gel" in a gel cell is silica sand. The electrolyte fills the spaces like a sponge. The normal level of the electrolyte is entirely contained in the sand. The battery should be fine in any position. If I were to copy this method, I'd add the water, charge the cells, drain off the excess water and then replace the caps.
@@jesscast5122 why would you direct someone to put their brain into a battery? I haven't seen any videos on this, does it really work? Did you put yours in one? D:
Yeah you want to fill to just cover the plates as charge and discharge will effect the levels and it can boil and bubble when you charge it if no room for gas and such is left to allow expansion you might cause the battery to rupture if it doesn't have any kind of overflow or pressure release valve, like all sla batterys do not have... the other problem with agm sla battery recovery is that capacity is probably going to be nothing like a new one as the crystallized acid will form between the plates and the glass matting and spread plates sometimes even cause some plates to fracture and recovering from this isn't possible without recasting the lead with the sulfation insulating parts of the left over plates held into place by the agm making pulsing and such not able to cause it to fall off. probably get some use from them in conditions where they are not moving anymore and always in the upright position. wouldn't use them for a scooter or anything...
Please I am trying to understand he used only rain water, which he poured into the battery containers, I have seen other videos with stated battery acid to be used. Is this water method right ? Also if I don't have a pimp charger, can I just place it back in the UPS to charge ?
Im trying this at the moment on a shumacher battery from a jump box. it had sat in storage for 2-3 years. ive cleaned it up and filled the cells with distilled water. charged it for about 20 minutes with a battery doc (battery tender). it reads charged but im pretty sure its a surface charge. im going to let it charge for about 24-48 hours. hope it works out
By just adding rainwater you're not going to realize the battery's full potential. You should be using distilled water and add some battery acid before topping up. Otherwise you will be diluting the electrolytes. But I have learnt how to flick a razor blade across the work surface.. Nice watch
Hey dickhead battery acid does not evaporate water does when you are working with an undamaged battery that has dried up the littlebit of water in the cells is actually concentrated battery acid so adding water only dilutes it back to its original concentration. This video kicks ass
I have a pair of sealed 6FM4.5(kS4.5-12)12V4.5AH/20HR both after charging well below power ,noticed when looking inside very dry can I put battery acid in them or just distilled water or does these take neither and just dispose of them unemployed so fixing them better option
IMPORTANT: Don't over fill the battery or you will make a mess and loose allot of your electrolyte when charging. THE WATER LEVEL SHOULD JUST COME UP TO THE TOP OF THE PLATES AND NOT OVER. This system of recovery works... Thank You,
Demineralized distilled water is pure, save a few dissolved minerals, steam distilled water IS pure, rain water contains dust, pollen and other impurities.
