This video shows how to mix the 2-part epoxy JB Water Weld and apply it to seal the seams of your chest freezer.
There is an introduction that talks about mixing, and video that shows it being applied to an actual chest freezer.
For details about preparation and other best practices for applying a two-part epoxy putty to seal the seams of your chest freezer cold plunge, see this page on my website:

Great helpful video however some things were not included such as preparation (sanding, vacuuming, cleaning with acetone), and the type of gloves that are best to use (nitrile with water to avoid sticking).

Love your content. If the JB weld is done correctly do you still recommend a pond liner paint? How long does the jb weld last if applied correctly?
@JohnRichterAustin
@JohnRichterAustin Год назад
Renob81 - thanks! If applied correctly, JBWW will likely outlast your chest freezer. The best practice for all chest freezers is to have a liner to protect the floor and walls. If you are in my Facebook group, check out the files section for comparison of the for recommended liner options. If you're not in my Facebook group, there is a link to join in the description of the video.

Been following for a while now and I have to ask: what are the consequences of not doing the pond shield? Let's say I just do the JBWW to seal. I understand this isn't a great long-term solution but is it mainly rust that will build up on the sides?
@JohnRichterAustin
@JohnRichterAustin Год назад
Not installing a liner of some kind will result in a shorter life-span of the chest freezer, whether it has a bare metal or white enamel interior. When rust and corrosion starts, it tends to get worse over time, and if not addressed can result in leaks and a dead chest freezer. Having to drain the tub and deal with rust, corrosion and leaks will ultimately take more time and money than just doing it right the first time. However, if you only want a short-term solution and have it in your budget to repair or replace the chest freezer when it dies, you don't have to install a liner.

Just curious as to why you sealed areas the didn't appear to have a seam. It looked like you had JBWW at the top rounded edge of the compressor covering. Was there a seam there? Mine is rounded and I only have a seam at the bottom edge of the compressor and the sides.
@JohnRichterAustin
@JohnRichterAustin Год назад
Different chest freezers are designed differently and have seams in different locations. Some have a seam on all sides of the compressor cover, some at the top and sides only, and some on the bottom and sides only. Some chest freezers have on vertical seam, others two or three. It might be difficult to see in the video, but if I'm putting applying JBWW it's definitely over a seam. :)

Hello John.. Is it OK to apply a new layer over an already dried one (that is covered with mold) and in general, can you apply a new one over a dried one? or you have to peel it and do it all over again? (I hope not!) Thanks!

Any putty that was not mixed correctly must be completely removed and discarded. Sand again and clean with acetone and reply completely brand new putty.

If I'm using a liner you recommend, do you still need to seal the seams with the JB weld or can I use a marine grade silicone?
@JohnRichterAustin
@JohnRichterAustin 11 месяцев назад
Which liner? If you are using a permanent liner such as Pond Shield, you need to use a 2-part epoxy putty like JB Water Weld to seal the seams. If you are using a removable liner, then you can use either JBWW or a high quality silicone or marine adhesive such as 3m marine 5200.

What is the best way to seal the drain plug?
@JohnRichterAustin
@JohnRichterAustin 2 года назад
From the inside of the chest freezer I stuff the drain with as much JB water weld as needed to go down about half an inch, insert the drain plug, and completely cover the plug overlapping JBWW onto the floor at least one half inch around the plug. Do not seal the exterior plug on the front wall- it is your early warning system if there is a leak.

Hello.. wonder if you can help.. I'm from Israel and I can only find here a metal interior chest freezer... Is there a way to cover the metal? or is it still OK to use if it's metal? what can you suggest with this type of situation? Thank you so much!

Yes you can use a chest freezer with a metal interior - however, it needs a liner of some kind if you want to avoid problems with water corroding or causing rust. It looks great, but, can i weld the freezer instead of sealing it ???
@JohnRichterAustin
@JohnRichterAustin Год назад
I'm not a welder, but I don't think the materials - especially the foam insulation - would hold up. On top of that, the seams often have large gaps that I suspect would not be suitable for welding.

If my freezer has a metal lining inside, can I still add Epsom salt or will it ruin the metal?
@JohnRichterAustin
@JohnRichterAustin Год назад
Mike, If you chest freezer has a metal lining inside, water alone can cause it to corrode. Those aluminum walls are almost never pure aluminum, and water (and salts) will interact with the impurities. You should drain it and try it out immediately and plan for some kind of liner. If you're in my Facebook group, check out the files section for a comparison of the four recommended liner options. If you're not in my Facebook group, see the link and the video description to join.

We don't have much long term data on Sikaflex 291. If you use a removeable liner, it should be fine. With Pond Shield, a 2-part epoxy putty is required.
