Kill comes from the Irish word _Cill_ meaning a mediaeval church. Normally it would be the word _Cill_ then the saint's name in Irish, but sometimes it's just _Cill_. An example is Kill, County Kildare (incidentally comes from Cill Dara_ the church of the oak). Kill was the church of the nine Uí Faeláin kings (now would have been called the O'Byrnes) and they were based at Naas (Nás an Ríogh).

The reason Dong shows up in the end of so many city names: The Chinese word for East is Dong. Basically, all of these names refer to the eastern end of a region or city.

My dad was born and raised in New Berlin, WI. With the whole WW2 thing they specifically pronounce Berlin differently putting the emphasis on the Ber syllable and they halfway drop the -lin syllable.
