We saw this coming years ago, and finally moved away from Seattle, actually far away, the further the better. But, Portland isn't any better, so we moved in between those cities and out in the country. We will never be back.

Well....I would sue the ACLU on behalf of every taxpaying victim subjected to those encampments. Unfortunately you can give them shelter, food, offer them rehabilitation programs, etc and they just won't care. I agree. When we moved to CA years ago, we felt sorry for them and provided help. After speaking with a lot of them, we discovered their drug addiction led to homelessness (not high rent or job loss). Almost all of them, except one, mentioned that hanging out with the wrong crowd led them to experiment with drugs. Only one mentioned a difficult childhood as the reason. When asked if they wanted to leave the streets, every one declined. Despite the efforts of various organizations, non-profits, and churches offering free resources and shelter every week, they consistently refuse help. My sympathy stopped when we learned about the free resources they decline. It stopped when two of them threatened my life, and several neighbors were assaulted during the day merely for walking down the street. I don't feel sorry for someone who refuses help, disregards free resources, and becomes violent while on drugs. They also commit crimes and trash the city. Additionally, I suggest everyone watch RU-vid videos where homeless drug addicts are interviewed, and they admit to refusing help. They also brag about doing drugs and selling it. One bragged about selling drugs to teenagers. I also suggest watching the documentary "Seattle Is Dying" by KOMO News. You can find it on RU-vid.

people have lost the way to reasonable behavior. why should camping suddenly be allowed after years and years of no camping. in the 70's we didn't allow camping and we didn't until one day the first tent went up . that makes no sense why suddenly are we giving away our city to thugs dope users and ripoffs . it makes no sense why are we letting this group of bottom feeders take control of the city it is nuts. i have been homeless multiple times and i worked at 5 homeless programs . this current way of managing homeless people makes no sense. the drug users mostly just steal from the stores some rob and do breaking and entering into homes or businesses and sell drugs to help support their habit. it's not kind or merciful to let these addict's live as a drain on all of us in the city. jail is the place to start the process of rehab. there are a lot of treatment options here in seattle without a reason people may change while they drag others down. forcing change with the criminal justice system is smart and merciful. when released on probation people are held accountable and failure on a drug test sends them back to being locked up away from drugs and a lifestyle that hurts everyone around the addicts and turns the city into a shithole.
jail them for 30 days to start that breaks the addiction, then probation with a work requirement . we did this for years at Reynolds work release and the bishop lewis house. we also have evergreen treatment services and THS drug treatment not to mention at least 5 other christian programs and the set free ranch. addicts need the threat of incarceration to motivate change. when state inmates came from shelton or walla walla the were sent to the bishop lewis house they had 2 weeks to find a job or they went back for 6 months. this system worked for years and years but it starts with locking up those selling and doing smaller amounts of meth , crack, fentanyl .@@carpediemarts705
So glad I moved. Thanks Seattle City Council for enabling these people. No accountability whatsoever! And I've nearly been there, I worked , researched daily, then got some housing. Wasn't easy but I did do it. I didn't wait for someone to help either.
People need to take responsibility for their behavior. People want a free ride, no responsibility for their own actions. There is no such thing on planet earth.
I like the boulder idea. Then we an pay for the tiny houses and put them out of the cities with bus routes plenty. I noticed many of them smoke. That habit is 260.00 a month, they could afford bus fare.
The aclu is a joke now. They are partisan and defend the neo-liberal leftist agenda, they wouldn’t be caught dead supporting anything extreme on the right like back then. Not saying it’s better or worse to defend leftist agenda vs right but they are just simply not an objective organization that wants to protect civil constitutional liberties. They now act to defend stuff like gender theory instruction in elementary schools and trans athletes being allowed to play women’s sports.
Where are the churches of Seattle? Why aren't they doing more to address this issue with their tax-free properties? Sharing their resources in affected communities would be a true blessing for those in need.

I wonder under the 9th circuit ruling involving Grants Pass, Oregon, what happens if the homeless refuse shelter offers. If offers of shelter are refused by the homeless can the city still go in and clean out the encampments? I suspect one of the reasons why so few encampments are cleared out is safety. You have no idea if the residents have firearms or flammables that can be used against the workers.
If this is the case, why don't they purchase a huge plot of land just for the homeless to reside on, bringing in weekly a cleaning crew to collect rubbish and clean toilet areas. The homeless need a place to live where they're not going to be wiped out. So give it to them otherwise the streets will never get cleaned up.
Why couldn't the homeless pack their trash and clean the toilets. A condition for camping, not unreasonable to expect them to clean up after themselves.
Why wouldn't you have tynt homeless clean up their own mess? People constantly cleaning up after them is part of the problem. They are not made to be responsible for their own actions. Why would you throw good money after bad by purchasing land for them, then cleaning up after them? Again, it's someone else taking on all the responsibility for these people's bad life decisions. Instead, they need to be FORCED to go to Rehab and they can't leave until they're clean, sober and can stay that way, and don't immediately go out and use drugs again. It's time to quit coddling these drug users and treating them as victims. They aren't victims. They're the victimizers. Every family member, friend, loved one, neighbor, member of society, chronic pain patient, child, adult, etc. is a victim of these people and their horrendous actions that are endangering lives everywhere. This isn't just happening in Seattle. Many blue cities in blue states who have decided to employ these idiotic Leftist policies are suffering these same issues. It's horrible what is happening in this country, and it needs to stop! This isn't right, and it helps no one to be encouraged and enabled to be a drug addict gorked out of your mind on drugs and/or alcohol and losing everything in life with the worst case scenario being losing your own life.
Seattle is a joke. They, SF, Portland......did it to themselves. The Court is a joke too. I think that judges homes/property should be considered city property and homeless should be able to live there on the grounds and in their homes.
If you knew anything about the actual experience of homeless people you'd know these removals are temporary measures to temporarily please locals who literally dont want to look at these people. They just move somewhere down the street, and now they have less, because all their stuff got taken. so whether or not they are good people, which many are, that leads to them having to beg or steal or hustle extremely hard, under worse conditions, leading to mental health collapse which is even worse for everyone involved. Good, hardworking folks who became homeless talk all the time about how even if everything goes as well as it possibly could, they have clean professional clothes, they find a place to shower, they have food at night and in the morning, they manage to sleep, they have a printed resume, a clean record, and they go to a job interview. If they dont get that job that day, all the resources that enabled them to get that interview have probably been stolen from their tent, and they have to start over from scratch. How does ruining peoples things and making them walk a few blocks away change anything? You just want to punish people because you feel life has punished you. You're cold inside, warm up.
So only the people with means can live in cities? Fact is, hard working democrats don’t like crime and garbage everywhere. What is the republican solution? Strip the homeless of their rights and make them live in a guarded internment camp?More taxpayer funded prisons and a police state? Who wants the billion dollar prison in their backyard? Who wants to pay the $35,500 annual amount “per” prisoner incarceration cost? Both side need to stop playing politics, come together and find a solution. The blame game gets us nowhere.
Honestly, if this is happening in most cities of America I’m not surprised it’s happening here in Canada, and in almost every city too. Police have their hands tied behind their back they’re not even able to really do anything they’re just as mad and frustrated as we are. Imagine being taught, and trained to protect people to do your best for humanity, and then being told that you can’t do anything to help them. Even if they get arrested, they’re probably probably going to get that out of jail in a couple of days if not the same day. If everything keeps getting worse I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing community of people enforcing their own sets of laws. I don’t think it will get to that point within the next year or two but it definitely could after that.
I agree Chicago Needs Changes because of gang violence San Francisco needs a change due to car breakins Los Angeles Needs a change because How dangerous are Hoods are there and neighbourhoods and Seattle needs A change Due to crime Homlessness This is getting worse in USA And Canada 😔😔😔😔😔
I live in the SF Bay Area and San Francisco has the same problem. There is a lawsuit preventing cleaning up homeless encampments The trash just build up. The homeless should be allowed to set up camp infront of the lawyers homes.

We have the same problem in Colorado. Police have their hands tied they don’t get backed up by the courts, mayor, governor or anyone else. No one cares anymore I lived here all my life and can’t believe this is happening. So much drugs, crime ext going up and there’s no control.

They need helpful jail. Honestly. Forced rehab. And the people of the city need to be willing to pay for it. It's reality, and it needs to be dealt with. There isn't another way. These people need to be moved aside. Every city will have good areas and bad areas, as long as poverty and weakness exist. Please, can we just not sacrifice our nicest streets to the most desperate and dangerous people? The scary thing is that poverty and addiction are as visible as possible right now, and nobody cares to invest in fixing it. That's a cultural problem, but honestly it's here to stay. The state of Washington needs someone like Rodrigo Roa Duterte to deal with this mess. It must be dealt with harshly or it eill continue. Remember a community usually gets what they vote for.

I was homeless for many years in the seattle area Business is people in their homes. The state DOT has the right to kick people off their property. What the city of saddam needs to do is. Make more tiny houses available. Make them live in a tent city with tiny homes. Also keep the homeless moving. They will not have a chance to take all their junk with them. The problem is there is mental health issues. Those tiny houses should be. Made and having homeless people so they can take care of themselves
I understand this is a year old report. I think someone or a ring of people are Embezzling money from The City of Seattle! Why are Public Schools shutting down? Why not handle the homeless situation, the police shortage, the underage violence that has no gang connections, I'm not thinking before speaking, just being honest. But buildings are burning all of a sudden. The people have been having business for years upon years and all of a sudden the building burns down and a new developer moves in. Come on. Capitol Hill is on Fire! I'm born and raised in Seattle and have issues like everyone else but i know others see it too. Where is the money going to? What are we voting for?
They spent 27 billion to let this fester. Everybody cries we feel bad , but hate the mess. Wake up , build a rehab and training complex. Take all the the known people and hold them, the known criminal ones. well Komo news created an excellent Documentary "Seattle is Dying". You contrasted what is being done in Seattle with how Rhode Island is handling the addiction and homeless issue. Rhode Island is making hugely productive and compassionate strides. It doesn't cost anymore when you consider the crime and the law courts, and police services, emergency services, etc. As well as property damage, decrease in quality of life for all residents. Vancouver, BC should check that out as well and institute the solution modelled on that of Rhode Island. Instead what are they doing? Still handing out free drugs, or... ?
When an encampment gets that bad? I lived in a tent because I got myself arrested. Lost my apartment. Job. Tore muscles all in my left arm. The few that lived in the encampment never did anything with their garbage. It just piled up. I ride the bus, so I take my small amount to the can. I cleaned up the neighbors stuff after they left, and two days later? the cops kicked me out 😢 Now that shelters are open from the pandemic, I'm on a list..
Stop calling these people homeless. Call them what they are - drug addicts. They won't go into shelters because they can't get/use drugs in the shelters. It's time to build more county jails, fill them up, and let the addicts suffer through withdrawal behind bars.
Sending them to jail would eat up even more taxpayers dollars or do you not comprehend that, specially if they require treatment from withdrawal that'll be an even bigger cost. Guess you don't think things through before you say them huh.
Where are these people getting their money from? I see the massive piles of trash. That shows someone is providing money to purchase the goods they consume. The system is broken because we the people have forgotten who we are as a people.
its messed up and inhumane to treat them like animals by not applying the law to them. The homeless deserve as citizens in the united states to not have their right to be punished for breaking the law slowly taken away. its so immoral to treat them like pigeons or rats
Imagine a world were drug addicts didn’t destroy entire cities and the ACLU didn’t enable deadbeats. Funny, they go from defending Neo Nazis to defending hobos.
I wish some people aren’t so butt hurt and keep thinking it’s unfair to fix the homeless problem. These people need homes and I’ll gladly help pay though taxes. These homeless people are people, our people. They’re not animals but everyone treats them like one. I know people who’ve been homeless and it wasn’t their choice. I suggest to give the homeless to options between [rehabilitation + tiny home] or [clean up their encampment]. Either way, they will lose their encampment so it’s most likely that they’ll choose rehabilitation. The shelters in the city also aren’t helping cause they’re being treated like animals in bunkers. Theres barely any real rehabilitation to let the homeless ease back into society. There’s so many UNUSED and NEW tiny homes built FOR the homeless they’re going to waste. Makes me furious :/
If illegal immigrants with very few resources, are able to survive in the USA, why are the homeless not able to do so? Could this nation, adopt the lifestyle techniques of illegal immigrants, in order to resolve or cure our nation’s homeless problem? What do immigrants do, which the homeless cannot do, or are prevented from doing ?
Yep 💯 facts people keep voting for democratic party or liberal party they just sweep 🧹 all the problems under the rug & at least republicans want law & order but most of them getting voted out
