A Seattle researcher and his team could be among the first scientists to develop a portable, artificial kidney that has the potential to help millions of patients undergoing dialysis for kidney disease.
Chronic kidney disease affects an estimated 37 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Many patients go through a blood-filtering treatment called dialysis, to stay alive. Some, go through dialysis for several hours, several times a week. But a new invention being developed by a Seattle University researcher hopes to change that.

A person who endures kidney failure for 3/4 of my life so far. This is a major breakthrough. I've suffered kidney failure since the age of 13. Another breakthrough is the bio artificial kidney that UCSF is developing. It will save lives.

Not much hope when all we hear is someday. This is wonderful and God bless him. Pharmaceuticals and dialysis companies, hopefully, will not block approvals. I’m 81 and my 45 year old son’s caretaker, doing home hemorrhage. I pray for this every day so he can go on when I’m not here.

Unfortunately Baxter and Davita are billion dollar companies and will block this technology the way Ford was blocked from producing hemp biofuel in the 50's. Too much money involved.

As good as this sound, this would lead to mayor infections where the catether is located, what we really need is an artificial kidney that can be implanted into a patients body who only works on blood pressure like a normal kidney does. Leaders worldwide should Fund Research more around this matter, there are more than enough qualified people that have the capability to make this happen.

@@user-ih5rd1ts2h Maybe by contacting the University and donating some money. I'd go ask them. If they're well funded, there may be nothing you can do. You know, there are other groups working on artificial kidneys, including USC.

The last Blaze you want to go is a university for such a thing. Incompetence took my kidney by overdose if a med that removed 20 lbs of water from my body, had a heart attack. Doctors avoided conversation regarding that overdose where the first kidney doc 1st described what the med did, while reading my chart, and after he said oooh, stopped talking and was replaced by another and never saw him again. Oh and two tears later at the Vegas VA, another kidney doc while reading my chart from Seattle said, so you had a heart attack. When I reacted with startled “WHST” she stopped talking as well and I never saw her again ad well. I designed award winning EHRs and redesigned the largest clinical analytics system in the USA. It’s a 33 billion dollar R year industry threatened by this new tech. Financial annuity tables over patient care. The entire med industry WAS 2Trillion in 2003, NOW it’s about or more than 5Trillion. The USA is Last and most expensive of 11 industrial nations and the life expectancy if seniors gas GONE DIEN BY INE YEAR? This is what happens when Healthcare is run by Carpetbagger’s! GREEDy Liars. .

This innovation may be a step better than the existing set up. However, it is not even remotely the most desirable solution. since any form of dialysis does no more than 10% of kidney function and that too, with an enormous burden to the patient, the focus of any innovation should be the development or discovery of implantable or transplantable solutions, and not those that require the patient to connect to an external device.

I know it's a prototype, but it looks like something someone made in their garage 20 years ago. There's just not much funding for any of these artificial kidney projects. It sucks. All the money and notoriety goes to cancer research. You just don't hear as much for ESRD.

Everything has been updated and developed, even things near to impossible have been done. But still kidney dialysis is still stuck at the 60s with no improvements and extremely low survival rate, funny that creatinine lvl is high after 6hr session.
