Welcome back to Naval Gazing at Camp David.
This week we are gazing into the near future at new yachts that have been announced but have not yet completed Hull #1.
Our future yacht today is a brand-new design from the company known affectionately as "the affordable Outremer". We are talking about Seawind and…
The new Seawind 1370!
As the future Ruby Rose Two, the Seawind 1370 is probably the most reviewed and covered prelaunch in history. Neither La Vagabond with their new Rapido 60 or Gone with the Wynns with their new HH OC44 have provided such an in depth peek into the build process as Nick and Teresa have produced.
With that said, and facing the intimidatingly expansive technical knowledge of Nick on this, and almost any other boat, I am wading into our review with a certain trepidation…but here goes!
Today we are going to
1. Review its specifications, pricing and layout against three similar new vessels.
2. Do a full tour asking, "What would Sylvia say?"
3. Have a look at the used market for 3-5 year old comparables
4. And finally give it a "Dave Score" and compare the result with all our previously reviewed yachts.

G'day Dave. Many thanks for your reviews. It's always great to get different opinions and shoot the angles. Nice summary table at the 10min mark. Balance shape the foam by heat, while Seawind makes cuts on the flat. This should lead to more weight on the Seawind during the vacuum infusion process. Btw the balance 442 baseboat displacement is now 11800kg, not 10750kg. We’ll hopefully find out the as constructed displacement for Seawind 1370 soon.

Hey Jack. I was on the 442 last month, and if I have the extra cash to spend (and maybe even if I didn’t) I’d do the Balance without a second thought. Both the 442 and the 482 I was on feel like extremely high quality, robustly built and beautifully finished yachts. It’s hard to express the feeling they give you but it is one of exceptional confidence in the vessel…and I think the dagger boards are sexy as heck. Lol. How’s that for million dollar decision logic!

You have to remember that the tri-fold door was launched by Seawind in 2004. They invented inside/outside living on cats by partnering w/ an NZ engineering firm to completely rethink the structural engineering and composite build processes for catamarans. It forced the rest of the industry to catch up, which took more than 15 years. Yes, it's time to replace it with the sliding door system, but let's put its history in context. It's not a bad copy, it was the first that now needs to move to gen 2. By the way, the windows in front of both helms move down vertically like a car door window so there is no glare. As for the helm position, everyone has their preferences. I've charted several models from almost every manufacturer since my first cat charter in '96. I have no interest in my primary helm/watch standing location being out in the blazing sun, driving squalls, or relentless sea spray. Been there done that. Sounds fun for an afternoon, but not for weeks crossing an ocean. Outremer is onto the right idea, with the "fun seat" for occasional use, whether driving the boat or just out in the breeze when you get those days of champagne sailing. Not as often as we'd like. But you need another main helm for watch standing. Let's look at the Balance 442. When I first saw the versa helm, I too thought, finally someone brought those pivot helms from the racing monos to cats. However, it's not that easy. The lower helm position is almost good for standing watch on long voyages. "Almost" because the wind does change, so to adjust the sails or reef, you've got to move the helm position, potentially get on rain gear, slide open the hatch, tweak your sails or reef, move the helm position, close the hatch, take off your rain gear, dry your hands off, get your book and coffee and go back to standing watch. That means you are going to wait too long to reef and get yourself into trouble. If you had reversible electric winches, you could do minor adjustments from the lower helm with poor visibility. There are times you are sailing in heavy rain for many many days on end. Great seed of an idea, just not sure it's fully thought through yet. Now the HH44. I’d put money that they build a different helm set up or will have to change it quickly. You have to lean over your instruments and throttles to get at your winches, swap lines, etc. It’ll be a small number of months till a line gets wrapped around one of those throttles and rips it off the console. When you pivot the wheel, ok maybe it’s out of the way of line handling but doesn’t put it anywhere useful. If you are sitting on the back bench maybe you can reach over and hold the wheel, but you have no sight of your instruments and sails from the pivoted position. The fold out bench seat is a sorry attempt to copy the functionality of the Outremer driver's seat. I can’t believe real sailors haven’t given them the feedback on that helm design and they haven’t fixed it by now. Yes, you can get a forward serious passagemaking helm as an option on the HH52, but I wouldn't be shocked if that is more than 2x the prices we are talking about here. While the 1370 helm isn’t perfect, I think it’s far better than these two. If you added an Outremer “fun seat” with a tiller or even just the seat with the autopilot remote in one hand, you’d get the best of both worlds. I owned a Maine Cat for a couple years, and did an ocean crossing on a big custom cat that had a Gunboat like forward interior helm with line handling cockpit forward. Unless you’ve tried it, you don’t know what you are missing. Look at any Chris White boat. It’s hard to fit on a smaller boat, you have to make a lot of compromises to the interior layout and still have pushback from the market. The Maine Cat founder retired, so we won’t see any more iterations from him. To my mind you have 3 “driving” use cases. 3% of the time, you want the “fun seat”, like you were sailing a dinghy or hanging out in the air on a warm night looking at the stars. ~87% of the time, low stress watch standing. Check the horizon and your instruments every 5-10 minutes. Adjust your sails once an hour. Reef in/out 2x/night. Otherwise, you want a comfy high back, feet up, book in hand, and great forward vis by lifting your head with minimal effort (if it’s too much effort, you’ll get complacent and not check as often as you should). ~10% of the time, focused standing watch. Lots of traffic, quickly changing weather, uncertain charts. You are watching the instruments, AIS, weather, scanning the horizon as your primary focus.

Hey Mark. I am blown away by just how much I have learned from experienced audience members like you in the very short time since I started these videos just to try to convince Sylvia to do the circumnavigation (making some headway there btw). Your observations ring so true with some of the advice I received from Rob Poirier of Privilege Catamarans in an interview I just did with him at the Miami Boat Show. This perspective has really focused my boat decision criteria! Thanks so very very much for watching and especially for taking all the time that you did to share your experience with me here. Nice review Dave. The Aventura is a bit of an odd comparison. Even though it's a lot of boat for the buck, I would have preferred to see the Nautitech open 44 in there. Performance wise I think it would have been a better fit with the range and it might just beat the Seawind a fraction i in price. If you like the outward helms and need to have unobstructed visibility, this would be a very nice boat.

I see what you're saying about the helm position and absolutely agree about the tri-fold door. Not sure what Seawind was thinking but I foresee possible issues down the line with a complex door system like that. I'm not aware of any other manufacturer that has this folding door design. Couldn't Seawind have fitted a garage door like Bali/Windelo? Hope _Ruby Rose_ don't regret that specific feature of their yacht. That said, I love the renders of the hull interiors. Very beautiful if it will turn out like that. It gives the impression of a larger yacht. Normally, I wouldn't consider a yacht under 50ft as a liveaboard but I do like the SW 1370 a lot overall. All the best to you and yours in the new year.

Best of luck to the reviewer for his sailing aspirations and enthusiasm, and I hope he can accomplish his sailing dreams. My interpretation of his review is not intended to diminish his ambitions but to give context that this should not be taken seriously as a legitimate review. I think it's important to point out that reviews like this (not uncommon) are fundamentally flawed and only confuse the uninformed buyer. First, it's ridiculous to clump such a wide variety of boats with specific individual strengths, price points, lengths, sailing characteristics, and so on into a one size fits all category. The reviewer should understand better the type of catamaran that suits him or he wishes to review, such as a comfortable island hopper, a true lightweight performance catamaran, or a mixture of both, narrow those down, then compare in kind. Safety at sea for the type of sailing intended should be the most heavily weighted category. Random categories that satisfy a reviewer's uninformed and perceived needs, such as what might attract his spouse to sailing, and categories like "Lazy Sailor," "Condo," and "Geek" are ridiculous. It becomes even more absurd to weigh those categories equally for a total score. Here is my review of the Seawind 1370 vs. the Leopard 45. 0-10 Scale, higher scores are better. I have selected the categories on what is clearly the most important based on my expertise and weighted them equally because I can't do any more complicated math than that. I then assigned completely subjective scores based on no known criteria and my almost nonexistent understanding of each boat manufacturer's marine engineering, structural, production, finishing quality, etc. Also, I have no sailing experience worth mentioning. Trash Can accessibility: Seawind 1370: 2 Leopard 45: 10 Sailing and safety : Seawind 1370 8 Leopard 45: 4 Number of Bathrooms; Seawind 1370: 5 Leopard 45: 10 History of Construction flaws: Seawind 9 Leopard 45: 6 Top sailing and comfortable cruising speeds: Seawind 1370: 8 Leopard 45: 5 Number of Cushions on Boat: Leopard 45: 10 Seawind 1370: 5 Hull manufacturing process and integrity Leopard 45: 6 Seawind 1370: 9 Size of Trampoline: Leopard 45: 8 Seawind 1370: 4 Integrity of system redundancy Seawind 1370: 8 Leopard 45: 4 Fixed seating on hardtop: Leopard 45: 10 Seawind 1370: 0 Leopard 73 Seawind 54 It's obvious with these scores that the Leopard is hands down a substantially better overall sailing catamaran. Thanks for reading my review, and I hope this does not become a tool for you to use when considering your catamaran.

Hi Pops. No worries. The base price is before any options are chosen. With all but a few exceptions (ex. Xquisite, Antares) you could not “sail away” from the dock in this configuration. Generally, when I go through a manufacturers price list and add in the options and maybe some aftermarket elements (water maker, radar, etc) I find that the final, or “sail away” price is 50% higher than the base price. I went back to the numbers and found that it’s 300lbs less than the Seawind and less than 300 lbs more than the Ballance. So basically the same as 3 if the 4. It’s upwind sail area is the highest. It’s SA/D ratio is better than either Ballance or HH. It’s D/L ratio is only 1.5 greater than Ballance. …and with these numbers it is $250k-$400k less than any of the others with far more useable space and entertainment area. I’d say it is a very strong point of comparison in every way other than traditional format. Thoughts?

@@navalgazingatcampdavid you're just comparing numbers. The Aventura is 1000 miles away from the other three, as it's a low cost production boat, good for charters or simple coastal cruising. You need to look at these boats in the flesh to realise. The Nautitech is the only other production cat that can compare to the other three.

@@sirox68 Hi agin. Have you been on board the Aventura product?

@@navalgazingatcampdavid I have, and it is definitely leagues below the other three. The philosophy is similar to Bali, maximise living space, sacrificing seaworthiness. And adding cheap finishings and components. It is not at all designed for round-the-world cruisers, it is definitely targeted to the cheap charter market. The accessibility of the helm is the first thing you notice when you go on board, you need to walk through the side decks to get to the helm!!! But it is awful from many other points of view. I own a Nautitech 40 open, and it is a totally different league compared to Aventuras. Nautitechs are comparable to Seawinds. HH and Balance are a league above everything else of course, and their price shows it.
