I have a very special place in my heart for this movie. My grandpa was a bit of a hermit himself, who lived by himself and didn’t really have much in the way of modern entertainment. I spent a summer living with him in my teen years and we became really close. One evening I convinced him to try renting a couple of movies (the only 3 he owned were Happy Gilmore, Young Guns and Young Guns 2). So we went down to the local grocery store and rented Secondhand Lions, and on top of it being something of a mirror of our situation he really loved it (He had no idea Robert Duvall was still acting at the time). He passed a couple years ago, but I still have vivid memories of that summer. Very happy to see you enjoy this movie!

I saw it many times with my dad before he died. We loved the bonus features, the deleted and alternate scenes especially. Robert Duvall as Hub is uncannily like my grandfather on my dad’s side who died three years before this film came out. I always like to think he would have loved it.

This is a classic pile of crap. Your grandfather was a hermit but he owned three films - Happy Gilmore, Young Guns and Young Guns 2. "a summer in my teen years" is laughably vague. Why were you spending summer with your hermit grandfather who owned three films? What planet was this meant ot have happened on? And the classic - "now he is dead I think of this film" 0/10

The biggest teen was played by an actor named Travis Willingham who made it big with a D&D stream called Critical Role. He has told the story at conventions and such that while shooting the fight scene, Robert Duvall kept punching him in the face because he thought Travis was a stuntman who knew how to take the hit without getting hurt. When he found out Travis was an actor, not a stuntman, Duvall ended up yelling at the director for not telling him sooner. 😂

My mother grew up in rural Tennessee. She had a lot of siblings, and once they fooled her into thinking that chewing tobacco was good to eat (they pretended to eat it, but were dropping it down their shirt collars). So she ate some and, as she put it, "was sick as a dog." She lived to be 90, so she got through that okay. Hell, she raised five kids of her own and got through us okay.

I was excited when I heard you were going to do this movie. It's a beautiful story. I love Hub's speech, and I just wish we got to hear the whole thing. Saying someone "died with their boots on" means they died in action, as opposed to dying in bed. Hub and Garth wanted to die fighting. Hub especially was afraid of becoming weak and useless. He wasn't sick with cancer or anything, but he kept doing dangerous things because he knew he was going to die sooner or later, and he wanted to be sure that he died in action, not wasting away or lying sick in bed. The comics at the end were drawn by Berkeley Breathed, the cartoonist who made "Bloom County" and "Opus".

I did like the ending (as opposed to the alternate one). His former adversary was obviously not only powerful, but an intelligent man who grew as a result of their encounters/rivalry. To think he grew to deeply respect them and to see the results in the more low-key and hospitable children/grandchildren, showed that Hub's influence helped him live a fruitful and honorable life himself.

You should see 21 jump street tv show on DVD the famous uncover of Tom and Doug was the McQuaid brothers and some of the cast of a nightmare on elam Street was on episodes of 21 jump street .Tom Hanson retired from the dea and owned a boiling ball place and Doug also retired from the dea too and is a prist . Tom Hanson has a tragic story about when he took a girl to a valentines dance and his cop father was shot while stop killed a killer robbery and the robber was killed as well as Tom Hanson Sr and his partner . Tom decided to be a cop and he started a ruff but he became more cooler and Tom had a bully that was a girl and she stop when at a little kid dance and she was love struck .Doug penhal was bully was a guy jack and he destroyed his uncle's classic car for 1950, and his uncle was playing by Peter deluise 's father dom deluise and it was prom night jack moved away and the girl is unknown what happened to her in the car .jack bully Doug with pranks and wedgies in school and high school in the 70s nor 80s . This is sad movie but it is moving . Johnny Depp decided to go and do his acting in movies and left 21 jump street in season 5 and Tom Hanson move to the dea and soon did Doug penhal .and 21 jump street tv show stopped at season 5 in 1994 I think ? If nobody mentioned it yet, there's a deleted scene in which Osment goes into the kitchen, and sees a bunch of information request postcards that Caine filled out, to bring salesmen out to the house (so that he & Duvall can shoot at them!), and Caine walks in & says something like "Please don't tell your Uncle Hub that I'm responsible for them coming here: it'll ruin his day." 🤣😅😂 Yes, Ashleigh, you must look at the works of both Caine and Duvall - they're a couple of class acts. I think this was the last film that Osment did as a child: his voice was indeed crackling in real life, so they had to get this film shot as fast as they could. Oh - you also saw a younger Osment in "Forrest Gump" (he was Hank's son at the end), and there's a few other fantastic films he did when he was young, "Pay It Forward", and "A.I.: Artifical Intelligence". Both may make you cry.

First notable film role (altho he was only on screen for a couple minutes) was as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. He was in True Grit, MASH, The Godfather I and II, Apocalypse Now, Tender Mercies, Stalin, The Apostle, Deep Impact, John Q, Open Range... Michael Caine was in Deadfall, Too Late the Hero, Get Carter, The Eagle has Landed, A Bridge Too Far, The Fourth Protocol, a bad Jaws sequel, the Dark Knight series (as Alfred)... he won Best Supporting Actor for The Cider House Rules (1999), beating out Tom Cruise... told Cruise in his acceptance speech that he did him a favor, keeping Cruise's asking price per picture from dropping down 10 million.

I grew up working my families dairy/beef farm, and growing up and working with him I have seen so many people come to the farm who will sit and talk with him for hours. After he passed away, we had to have 3 days of a wake to accommodate all the people who came to see him before the funeral, and that was immediate family only. I talked with so many people who spoke so highly of him. I found out more about him in those 3 days than I did in the 32 years I had grew up and worked around him, and how he affected so many lives. My Dad was a Naval Lt. He headed a squad of deep sea demolition men during WW II. He wouldn't talk about it, other than one time, on one day when he was drunk, he talked about being on the deck of a small vessel with his assignment being clearing wrecks blocking shipping lanes approaching the Normandy beaches. Back then, the suits were the kind you see in old movies or Looney Toons, big brass helmet and a heavy canvas body suit. Air was supplied through a hose by compressors on the the deck of that small vessel. The lanes had to be cleared because the area was within artillery range of cliffs towering above the shore. He talked about the feeling he experienced realizing all the divers under his command, all of them teenagers, would die in the cold waters of the English Channel if an artillery shell hit his ship.

_Dirty Rotten Scoundrels_ (1988) starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin should be your next movie with Michael Caine. Robert Duvall played Tom Hagen, the family's consigliere and lawyer, in _The Godfather._ One of his best known roles was as Lt Col Bill Kilgore in _Apocalypse Now,_ in which he has the famous line, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like victory." Kyra Sedgewick (Mae) is married to Kevin Bacon. She had early success in her career, and took some time off after marrying Bacon to raise their two children. Two years after this film she was cast as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson in the award-winning, long-running (seven seasons) police series _The Closer._

Robert Duvall and Michael Caine are terrific actors. I would be up for Ashleigh to react to more of their movies. A few of favorites off the top of my head that I consider "must see" are "Tender Mecies" which earned Duvall the Academy Award for Best Actor, "The Man Who Would Be King" which co-stars Sean Connery and has a rating of 91 on Metacritic and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and "The Eagle Has Landed" starring Caine as the main character and Duvall in a relatively small but essential supporting role.

Robert Duvall is not related to Shelly. If you want to see his other best role beside this film look for To Kill a Mockingbird. Haley Joel Osmont is also famous for being the voice of Sora in the Kingdom Hearts games. Sir Michael Caine is the one with the glasses. Do you think if you had a pet lion Beans would get along with it? Died with thier boots on is a famous saying meaning: A person who dies with their boots on keeps working to the end. You previously heard it in Tombstone and Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

Walters artwork was done by Berke Breathed, creator of "Bloom County", "Outland", and "Opus". He's also done a lot of other stuff like the book "Mars Needs Moms". This is a little hidden gem that not a lot of people know about. I worked in a video store, and really had no intention of watching this when it came out. One of my jobs was to check movies if a customer said it didn't play right, and this one showed up in the pile one day. I fell in love with it and bought a copy immediately. I've always loved these types of coming of age stories where it's told from the perspective of an adult talking about their childhood. I highly recommend checking out a movie from 1998 called Simon Birch. Also, Now & Then from 1995. I think you'd like them both.
