One more tip: when you bring home second-hand yarn, seal it in a plastic baggie and put it in the freezer for a week to kill any moth larvae. I don’t generally wash the yarn - if it looks like it needs washing I don’t buy it - but I do give it a good freeze. So far so good.

Omg thanks!

For the burn test, natural fibers will turn to ash, while acrylics form a hard end, like melted plastic. I rescue a lot of yarn from thrift shops and garage sales!

I got some old granny squares in odd colors from a friend who was moving. Between the scrap yarn and the broken jewelry I collect, I can make all sorts of crafts. Rummage sales and people who are moving are my favorites. Tina, Al's wife

I love secondhand yarn, luckily the thrift store near me is one of the few that actually has a craft section and usually has some yarn.

this was such a fun video! (and useful of course, but fun too!) i love secondhand yarn specifically because of the fun of trying to decide what to make with such a limited quantity (although decision paralysis does happen sometimes lol). my local thrift store just created a specific yarn section in their craft supply area and i’ve been keeping my eye out for some fun finds there

ahh thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it :) and yes I agree, it's super fun. That's so amazing that your thrift store has a craft section, I've never seen that before but that's awesome!!!

I've never bought new yarn, all my fabric and yarn is thrifted and bargain bin stuff. It's a lucky dip and I love it.

Have you considered gently washing the garment before you unravel it? That has worked well for me.
