Here's one of my favorite film emulation workflows inside of DaVinci Resolve.
I call it my "secret weapon" of color grading, but let me know what you think in the comments below. Have you used CinePrint16? What do you think? What are some of your favorite workflows and tools?

That's great Thank you ! Does it look as good with S-Log footage ?
@cknopik
@cknopik Год назад
Absolutely! You'll perform a color-space transform into Arri Wide Gamut/Arri Log C, and then it should work perfectly from there. The only potential issue would be if you're working with 8-bit log footage. This powergrade does push things around quite a bit, which could result in some artifacts with 8-bit footage.
@adamdavey7609
@adamdavey7609 Год назад
Hey man! Ive bought the cineprint and its amazing, however theres 1 issue; the halation node doesnt seem to work on any of my clips. Ill turn the node on and nothing happens. Ill enter the compound node and everything is on, theres also another separate compound node in there labelled “OLD ver”which is turned off. If I pull that into the node line, I have to pull the opacity all the way down to 0.100 as its very intense. If you could shed any light on this, it would be much appreciated 🙏
@cknopik
@cknopik Год назад
Hey! That's interesting, I've never had that particular issue, so I can only speculate. The halation node only creates halation only in the brightest parts of the image - it essentially does this by isolating those parts, blurring and tinting them, and then layering that on top of the "base image". So in theory, if your image was underexposed or didn't have any highlights above a certain value, the halation node wouldn't do anything. I'd double-check your image pipeline leading up to the halation node and make sure there is a healthy exposure going into it. You could try bumping up the offset wheel in the "cam exp" node and see if that changes anything. The "OLD ver" node inside the compound node is a previous iteration of the halation effect - it is not meant to be used simultaneously with the rest of the nodes. I'd recommend checking the manual for more on that. Good luck with it!

Great tutorial, thank you! Is it normal that after applying the powergrade, the playback is extremely slow? Even with proxy and disable Denoise and Grain, I can't get over 7fps, my rush are in 25 fps. I have a Macbook air M1 16go Ram. It's weird...
@cknopik
@cknopik 10 месяцев назад
It definitely can slow things down since there are a lot of nodes to work through. You could grade in full res and then use proxy modes for playback. But yes temporarily turning off OFX usually helps.

Hey dude, great video, thanks! How do you handle colour management with this powergrade? I usually go fairly manual, working in DWG at the timeline level, but I'm finding the results are really hot in terms of saturation - should I bypass colour management when working with this PG? Also worth mentioning that the footage I'm working with in this instance is straight up rec709 as opposed to log footage...
@cknopik
@cknopik 5 месяцев назад
CinePrint doesn’t really accommodate a color managed workflow, so you’re stuck with CST’s. It also expects LogC, so unfortunately REC709 isn’t going to play very nicely here. In your case I’d look at using Dehancer or another option that allows for REC709 source footage.
@_flanky
@_flanky 5 месяцев назад
@@cknopik Hey man, thanks for replying! I've been playing around with it and I can get a really decent result with bypassing colour management and changing input / space to r709 so I'm going with it... that's what I love about grading in Resolve - if it works, it works, right? 😂 Edit: I am working with 10bit footage though

@zandermai2220

Hey brother, Great tutorial man, I'm just an enthusiast and shoot with a GH5. I know Tom recommends using Log but I actually don't have VLOG on my GH5 (Cost me an additional 100 to activate it). Are there any other picture profiles (HLG, CineD, Natural) you think I could make CinePrinte work? I actually have CinePrint for a while, I am able to get decent results using HLG but feels like it's not quite there (not sure if it's my inadequacies in color grading or its due to not using LOG) Also, just saw your photo editing process via DaVinci & CinePrint and noticed you choose sRGB as inputs, is that default input for all stills? Apologize for all the questions man, but your work in stills & video is what I am striving for. Thank you my man
@cknopik
@cknopik Год назад
I’m not super familiar with the Panasonic color profiles, but in general I think a high bit-depth LOG format is best for this powergrade. It requires a substantial amount of color data. For stills, I export sRGB out of Lightroom, so that’s what I use in my color space transform. Thanks for watching!
@zandermai2220
@zandermai2220 Год назад
@@cknopik ahhhhh, thanks for the tidbit of info. I actually found the LOG activation for half off and already purchased it! Going to experiment with it soon my brother, I've messaged Tom directly and he made it sound pretty necessary to have LOG footage. Thanks again my man.

Does this require the studio version of Resolve? I guess some nodes (grain?) is not self-contained, but uses Revolve Studio's grain effect?
@cknopik
@cknopik Год назад
I think 95% of the nodes would work in the free version. But yes, you would miss out on some of the OFX and denoise.

@@musichao if you’re in the free version of resolve you’ll likely need to turn off the denoise node and any nodes using OFX. I don’t have the free version so I’m not sure which those would be specifically.

Once I apply the powergrade to clip, I cant playback at even a decent speed. Any tips on how to regain some playback frame rate?
@cknopik
@cknopik 9 месяцев назад
It’s pretty intensive. If your machine is struggling, I would recommend turning off the denoise, halation, blur, and grain nodes while playing back. Then turn them back on for export. Hopefully that’s enough to speed things up.

Love the idea of this powergrade and it would be fun to challenge myself. Currently I'm pretty intimidated by the color page in DR. ha! imho I liked the original to the first grade shown. Because of the colors and how the man poped out of the background with the grade it had a green screen effect for me. Totally subjective though. There would always be good reasons to do that based on the story you're trying to tell.

Hi, today I bought cineprint16. But every time when I add the grade, there's text (davinci resolve studio) all over the video. Do you know how to remove this? Thankyou
@cknopik
@cknopik 11 месяцев назад
On the free version of resolve you’ll need to disable any of the nodes that use open effects that are studio only. Grain, blur, etc. Most of the look should still translate and you can find alternative ways to achieve those textural elements.
@joemanhwihan6874
@joemanhwihan6874 Год назад
can you make an on-set LUT through this?
@cknopik
@cknopik Год назад
That’s a good question. I’ll have to try it out. I think you could get the core of the look in a LUT, but of course the textural aspects wouldn’t be able to transfer over. I’ll follow up when I’ve tested it.
