Don’t let a courtesan tattooing your name on her skin distract you from the fact that the Fujiwara famously married their daughters into the Imperial family, allowing them control into the Heian court for 200 years.
its weird that anybody would get that long of a tattoo, where would you fit "your name on her skin distract you from the fact that the fujiwara famously married their daughters into the imperial family, allowing them control into the heian court for 200 years?" I imagine the only place is the back
I imagine myself as a courtesan in the Edo Period with a client. The conversation is as follows: "Do you love me?" "Of course!" "Enough to self-mutilate?" "Look, man. I just think you're okay."
@@peopleofearth6250 I don't know, probably because the video only pertains to female courtesans? C'mon dude. That argument doesn't work in this context.
Selling Women by Amy Stanley is a great book introducing historical prostitution in Japan. Prostitutes were mostly children sold into slavery by families who couldn't afford them; swords were kept away from them so they couldn't kill themselves. The only way out was for someone to buy her freedom, and hopefully to become a mistress (as a "fallen women" she probably couldn't marry). It's depressing and grotesque, but fascinating to read their stories.
This was mainly true for women in the red light districts during the Edo period. Originally Japanese sex workers worked independently. But the vilification of sex work by religious authorities, led to the creation of red light districts by the Tokugawa Shogunate in order to control sex workers. And any sex workers that worked outside of the red light district were punished and forced to work inside the red light district against their will.
@@magnadramon0068 smart move by the shogunate and those religious authorities. You get uphold a higher standard, gather all the sex workers into one place under your supervision, and you em get wash profits to fill the treasury. Truly big brain
The tattoo part was very interesting and helped me understand the issues with tattoos in Japan these days even more. The main argument is Yakuza, but I can imagine that there's still a whiff of "only hoes have tattoos" lingering in the air like a thick broccoli fart that follows you around.
It Is, AND for criminals , ITS really ugly AND you are making damage to a perfect body just to feel cool in the under world? , ITS the same kind of Grotesque that self mutilate , oh way the coursesans get It years ago.
It's kind of ironic how one of Japan's symbolic cultures is the Kitsune and how they trick people and make fantasies for them with warnings about them Yet the Edo folk actively tried making an illusion for themselves, they foxed themselves
The kitsune is basically a succubus. So, that in combination with weird over-the-top Japanese actions... yes, you're correct - the Edo people did fox themselves.
That’s why all the fun stories about spirits are from before or after then, the kitsune showed up and went “I genuinely don’t think I could make this worse”
In the edo period, a Double Suicide was considered to be the purest form of love, because it indicates Love transcending Life. Such disdain for life is deeply ingrained in the Japanese mindset, and also enabled things like Kamikaze Attacks and Banzai charges.
@@annakapp7087 But Romeo and Juliet is seen as a tragic story in Western cultures and is not seen as the purest form of love because suicide is highly discouraged in Christianity due to the inability for penance to be done unlike what's viewed by the Japanese of the Edo period.
@liselottehildegarde5367 Right but the suicide itself was done out of "love", there was still an acknowledgement of dying for your partner was suppose to be seen as romantic even in many western societies. The issue with Romeo and Juliette was that it was written as a tragic comedy, people were suppose to mock their "love" and their actions as something to consider absurd.
@@aureliaavalon I bet loads of them did. I mean, it's painfree blood several days a month (well, extra pain). And like, I dunno if they could _work_ during their periods? Like, most societies back then (and a lot even now) thought periods were super gross. If Japan was the same, she could still do some work those days, writing letters in blood without having to constantly prick or cut herself cause the wound stopped bleeding. And then just space those letters out a little so the clients didn't go "hey, how come she only gives me blood letters exactly 5 days every month?"
@@MsLilly200 The Historians Craft has a video about the high esteem women were held in during the Heian period, which was tied in part to the fact that they menstruated. I don't know how much of that may have carried into the Edo period, but food for thought
@@MsLilly200courtesans worked unless they had broken bones or severe medical illness. so menstruation was no excuse to take the night off. sexworkers were encouraged not to take time off because of the debt looming over their heads.
6:09 did none of them thought of using their period or smth? Thats like a free subscription for paint to write to people you hate almost every month or so
I think period blood is usually a bit to thick and full of uterus lining cloths to be able to work with it all that well, but it's a interesting thought🤔
The women did it because they had to or they would lose their livelihood (ie. Their main $$$ supporter). These sex workers were probably not falling in love with the hundreds of the men who bought them.
Imagine being so naive as to think the courtesans were in love with any of their clients. They did what they had to do to survive, and certainly not out of love for the losers who frequented them.
Either Yonosuke is the courtesans' most popular client, or he's their most popular supplier. I'm not sure which side I'm on on this. But either way, that guy's loaded.
I can't believe I hadn't considered that he could've also started a business supplying extra fingers back to other courtesans 😂hopefully not the ones he took them from
You slide your jokes/puns in the script in such a way, I almost always get caught off guard and now I have to stifle my cackling at 4AM to risk getting hollered at. Thanks for that, but seriously, thanks for that!!!
@@Linfamy when you think about it. It's really funny to demand gestures of loyalty and love from someone so economically inferior she has to mutilate her body to survive. Really shows how little empathy and compassion rich men had too poor people and women. Can you imagine it today? "Oh so you want to keep eating from my church's soup kitchen but you have yet to show your true devotion for our saviour! Please deliver a kidney so we can trust your love. That is if you're fond of eating. A very reasonable request from an untrustworthy poor such as you"
I suppose if the prostitute died of sepsis from a missing fingernail or digit, then maybe it really was proof of love. That or she'd rather be dead than have to deal with him. What a life!
I used to watch your videos alot in 2020-2021 and have picked them up again and have been watching the history of japan series. its really cool to see how your drawing style has changed over the years
Sure...the courtesans are horrible liars. Although, they'd probably be beaten, starved or worse by those who owned them if they lose their clients. But also, the men who would promise to free them, to marry them, to love them, etc and who never did. Someone who is lonely, forced to please men all day long who only care about themselves...would probably fall in love often and then get disappointed. Again and again. Women were forced to lie to survive. Men though? They were free. They just lied to get the 'girlfriend experience.'
💯 My whole life, I've been sick of men complaining about conniving women. Set up whole fucking societies where the only way to even survive, let alone accomplish anything, is to manipulate men, and then whine that women lie! NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!
Ooh, now I'm remembering a scene in "Bridge of Birds" (tale of an Ancient China that never was) where the skeevy thieves are digging up a rich woman's grave for her jewelry, and also her fingernails and hair (the secret observer good guy learns to his horror.)
And somehow this "well if you really love me then you would..." arms race resulted in a weird double suicide obsession. Even thought I conceptually understand it is still pretty bizarre. It is interesting how heavily this whole thing is tied into the fantasy created by literature. To the point where double suicide stories were banned because people kept being inspired to do it. The Edo government was often censor happy but that one I kind of get. It's like if the scenario of Romeo and Juliet was a lot more similar to real life and didn't have those comedic contrivances that get them to commit suicide, so people in those situations thought it was the best way to show thier love if they couldn't be together.
You also have a culture that doesn't shun suicide for the most part compared to Christian Europe where suicide is one of the worst sins you could ever commit. It's also part of the reason why the ending of Romeo and Juliette is suppose to be considered obscene because of the fact that they damn their eternal souls for such a fleeting moment of "love".
But another thing is that life is sometimes awful. For them suicide was in many ways honorable. So they get 'relief in death' but also a measure of honor. I can see why it is so common even now.
That finger-cutting fake out thing feels a lot like Abraham being told to murder his son. You have to actually try to do it if you want to stand any chance of getting out of there with finger/son intact.
Why do I see the trope in anime and manga about a rando killing courtisans shouting something about “cheating” or like “omg you lied about only loving me cause you keep seeing clients” Like were men really that stupid, selfish, or both?
Some people just get caught up in the fantasy. You see it today with people getting bent out of shape because their favourite streamer or idol actually doesn't consider them a close friend or whatever.
weird situation though - she would have had to cut a finger off to end up missing one, so one guy would get the real one. kinda awkward to get one of the fake ones then... though I suppose one could also try to wear a prosthetic for the first couple of times meeting a new client, and then pretend to cut off a finger that was already missing.
Idk man, I feel like only a majority of guys knew it was all a game. Like how would you find out if you were some sheltered otaku? The prostitutes had a whole network of women to talk to and get tips and tricks
Little cuts in your mouth, especially on the gum near the teeth, bleed more for longer than the same cut on fingers, but heal a lot faster... So yeah, it was better... Just throwing it out there....
I'm sorry we keep asking for more vids on the lewd side of Japanese history, but these are seriously my favorite videos and they are just so fascinating 😂
Damn is this a depressing subject, sex workers are treated pretty awful in almost every era of every land, which sucks when you think about it, most women are forced into it, have to endure it for their time doing it and apparently in the edo period in Japan the clients added a whole other ego based, creepy layer on top of the basic sex the women had to perform to survive. I’ve never understood why any man would want to have sex with someone who really doesn’t want to have sex them, it’s beyond creepy. You have to be some kind of pathetic guy to hire a prostitute to have sex with you
Sttttaaahhhhpppppp.....I'm so sick and my throat is killing me. I can't keep barking out unladylike laughter at your commentary. You are killing me lol
Lin sama, you're so ba at teasing the Japanese lol. My favorite veterans are Japanese and my style of food is Japanese-Mexican. I'm certain I'm top ten. I owe a debt to Japan and they also owe me. Thanks for making me lol again . I can't wait to be your ronin again but I'm busy as a magnificent 7 . Good to hear you again 🤙
Tbh if there is a Time Machine, I would go back in history and ask them few questions. I can never understand how can you love someone to the point that you want to pull nails out or chop fingers down to prove it. 😅
