OMG ! I finally think I have just found what I’be been looking for for such a long time! Thx so much for your explanations, which make me suddenly believe there’s hope for me. This tip of yours is… I don’t know what to say… but it is definitely working !!! It seems to me that’s magical 🎉❤ Thk U so much again and I am looking forward to seeing your next videos !
Queen! This is so useful, helpful, I love your energy and professional approach to frequencies 💕. Can't thank you enough! Exactly what I needed to add to my practices. 😎
As a lifelong singer, I have to tell you, this is one of the best singing videos I've ever seen. The way you move the tongue to get various tonalities, switch registers, keys and pitches is one of the best kept secrets. Mainly because people usually don't go that technical unless they're deep into singing.
Thank you!!!!!!! So it turns out my tongue is meant for more than ice cream cones. I had never once thought about my tongue whilst singing. This is a complete game changer!
An interesting phenomena could be that as we all experience less and less singers in an auditorium/opera theater setting and more through microphones/speakers with balanced volumes in each track, some of the techniques that were necessary to have a performer pleasantly audible in a large space above loud orchestras are a lot less important this has allowed nuances that would previously have traded too much carrying power for tone-shaping to become distinctive styles
Your a wow 🎉singing coach / teacher singers A big hug and thanks and smilies I lost my voice during an illness then I had concussions had neck injuries and I saw the big difference. Then I started developing sinus problems and a big difference, upper respiratory yada yada yada little by little like an onion I am layering down you are the best for me yet thank you for your gift. I’ve been working to improve for years one session with you. I saw a difference and I could feel it in the back of my neck, the tip of my tongue, the roof of my mouth and my surrounding your line and I do facial exercises and facial massage and I could tell what was going on. You are one fantastic teacher. Thank you.❤😊
Ms lady you could have charged a million dollars for this lesson, you have completely changed the game for me, this is what I was missing, I just been doing it back accident. That opera singer gave me chills down my body, damn she can sing.
George Michael (R.I.P.) did that in the song "Careless Whisper" many times (and in other songs). For example on the frase "Pain is all that you find". Wonderful composition and imo one of the best singers and a really great sounding voice.
Oh hell yes, great call! George Michael was such a great example of a singer who just had the most exquisite vocal resonance which made everything he sung sound so effortless yet powerful. 💜
Found your channel about a month ago, I think. REALLY enjoy the work you put into these. So much mastery in the "education" of it all but you have a way of making it sound like English lol with an adorable Irish accent to boot!
Aww you're so kind Josemery, thank you! All the effort feels so worth it when I read such a thoughtful comment like this. Thanks so much for taking the time. Great to connect, and look forward to sharing more vids like this in the future!! x
I use tongue root all the time when I belt. And then i’ll bring the cricoid cartilage through to make it fully big for maybe 2.5 seconds. What I find is this is how many pop singers are “belting.” It makes your thin folds sound “pseudo thick.” or “fake thick folds” as I call it. (Estillian here) Kerrie’s tongue root research is best. I’ve been teaching tongue root to my students and it’s the best.
OMG I am a new subby. I am IN LOVE❣️I thought the ‘secret mix’ was click-bait so I started not to click. SO glad I did! Where have u BEEN all my life??? AND u’re humble‼️ ♥️♥️♥️🗣🎧♥️♥️♥️
I've done it a couple of times now (I'm a Xtina fan) and she does that a lot and so did I unintentionally. I was kind of scared of doing it because I thought it was bad, I'm glad that it isn't. Thank you for this wonderrful tip.
Aaaaaaaah this is so good! Perfectly articulated! And as usual, SO FUN! I feel like I've unintentionally come across this tongue position/tone quality sometimes when singing and been scared by the accidental kermit sound. This is such a good way to identify and intentionally lean into the kermit, befriend him, learn from him. Thank you so much for this Gemma, and for your channel - it's been so helpful (and entertaining!)
Omg yes, this is something I noticed when I watched the bodyguard over (&over&over lol). I loved Whitney movies growing up cause I watched her sing, and noticed her tongue "looked weird". It took a long time to figure out how to place my tongue like that, but this video simplifies it so well!!
Whoa that was brilliant! This is the first video i have seen of yours-thank you for breaking it down visually, audibly, mechanically-singing has always been a “invisible” wonder but it makes way more sense when you describe it
This is amazing advice. I use it now to make sure not going pitch like I usually would. My only issue now with it is when I go higher it feels like cords are rubbing together and it makes me cough. How do I fix that?
Love your videos! Do you mind saying what vocal range/type you are? I figured you must have been mixing in the second phrase of the Whitney Huston song but it was so powerful! I’m curious if that’s how much power a mix could potentially give way up in that range!
OMG - I've been trying to find how to sing a larkin poe song and keep the switch from high down to the lower register sounding even, without going too wispy or shouty, and I think kermit the frog might be the way forward! Ive been touching on that style at times, seeking a comfortable place to sing from, but now realise I've not leaned into it nearly enough. Who knew kermy had the answers??😂😂 Here's the song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l5dqS251D98.htmlsi=BfGYEXOb3740ybO9
I like your pipes! I can't really understand what your saying but it reminds me of something I do sometimes when I'm hitting notes around the passagio, with good support (controlled belting). I sing the note in a dark sort of way, it is as Pavaroti would say "covered". Then I gradually brighten the sound by placing the sound at the front rather than the back, by changing the shape of my mouth/tongue. This makes the note more bright and cutting. This combined with good support really makes it a strong and bright note. Tonal placement.
Just as you put it; this technic turned my world upsidedown! I also use this video as my 2.video-warm-up ;-) You are really good at explaining things so even I get it
I found you on tiktok, and while your techniques are excellent for all singers, this one has really gone above and beyond to share them with us. I appreciate it and hope to be coached by you in the future. yiieee🥰
Thank you! I was noticing that sometimes I could reach the high note more effortlessly than other times, I knew it had something to do with tongue placement, but you explained it perfectly! Now I get it.
This is the first time I've ever seen one of your videos... and I have to be honest I've learned so much...like & subscribed... and binge watching more vids
I don’t even know who you are… but OMG, have I been looking for you for so long!!! 😮 I can’t even comprehend how much my mind is blown right now!!! To be clear, I’m so glad I found this video and your channel! RU-vid algorithm finally got one right!!
Tried the wee wee to the uh uh but I seem to be going into a light vocal fry on the uh. I sing lead in Barbershop so this dos'nt seem to be working as being on top of the not is important.
My older sister used to make fun of my voice for singing like this, but I learned by mimicking Christina. Hearing this is an actual vocal technique has made my day. All this time I thought I was singing improperly💗😭
heya gemma! when i tried to implement the Kermit the frog/ufo impression while singing a song ,even the one u did at the end, i felt like i just sang it in head voice or it was just too light.. why does that happen?
I watched this because I am struggling to record a vocal (I am not really a singer) and I thought it might help. I definitely will try it, and I believe it will! I have joked around singing like Chevy Chase in some of the VACATION movies, and thought I noticed that there’s something there. But the real takeaway is that I am now in love with Renée Fleming. Again. 😅
This literally was a complete changer for me on a song I've been trying to record vocals to for MONTHS. I struggle in my mix area, either pulling too much of my chest or it feeling too weak/airy. Plus I struggle with muscle tension dysphonia which definitely doesn't help! Learning to access this type of resonance has allowed me to sing in this area with so much less effort, the intonation is 10x better & my voice doesn't feel so strained. Thank you for this video!!!
Ha, I stuck with it through the whole video. Glad I did, immediately fixed a problem I've had on a transition in a song I've been doing for years. So little of what I find on here has really helped, but thx for posting this!
I found this video about a month ago and my TV crashed as I was watching it. I spent the whole day today trying to find it again (finally). The way I found it... I typed "Mix polyphonic singing". Weird hey! Because I remembered being able to do the technique like "Abe" from "Abe's Odyssey" (or something like that). Wow... hours of my life well spent because this video is good and I'm sure the rest of your videos are also. Thank you!!! ☺️💕
Yes. Gemma you got this kinda cute vibe😂. And I reckon this ring related highly to the vocal acoustics and it helps a lot with the first bridge area. That’s something used for a real smooth and powerful mix that can connect with the real belting sound.
Thanks Vincent 😆!! Yes, helps so much with my first bridge. I have to switch to twang for my second bridge. Thanks for watching and for your lovely comment!
@@trueartisttv Helps a lot with my first bridge as well, I would shift my F2 to a u in the first bridge mix and gradually approaching the i vowel when raising the pitch. Really fun to play with!
Add a good producer to this techniques and you are a star...I saw that with my little sister. this other guy "Lezina J". He makes her very nice songs. Said she found her right here on RU-vid. don't know how they do things but she loves to sing even more. Thank you RU-vid guys. All of you deserve more.
So everyone criticizing Xtina for having no technique..., when she had the ultimate technique but just because commoners could never they wanted to cancel her. It´s like just because you cannot understand something or because is different, doesn't mean is wrong. Thank you for sharing.
Great examples of a guy doing this is Jack black, David Bowie and Freddie mercury. The wee err exercise is good.. what’s more fun is doing the guitar solos with your mouth.. :) .
3 years into my singing, song writing and producing (oh and pianists :) ) journey and at the point where its all coming together. these videos have been the icing on the cake and that's surprising after the amount of daily practice, thousands of hours of tutorials and well known online course. True artist is sharing the holly grail of information. Thanks Gemma
How are you gonna use one syllable from Lionel Richie when Clyde from the Commodores' whole vocal sound is with that retracted tongue? When Lionel Richie does that sound, he's just trying to copy his old bandmate and author of funk, Walter "Clyde" Orange.
