Secret Shopper Scam EXPOSED!

Hey, kids, it’s dad, and for today’s Tommy log I want to talk to you about a secret shopper scam that I want to expose. So I got a message from an acquaintance on LinkedIn. She asked me to be a part of a secret shopper program. It seems legitimate so I filled out the form she linked to. Little did I know that it was a well-formed scam.
I got a USPS Priory Mail package in the mail with some instructions and a $2900 check. The scam works like this ...they want you to cash the check and immediately go to Walmart and buy gift cards and then share pictures of the gift cards with the scammers.
Between the time that you deposit the check and the time you buy the gift cards, the check will bounce. The bank gives you a provisional amount, but then when they see the check is no good, they pull back your entire $2900 bucks. So the five gift cards they want me to send, I would be out the $2900.
It’s all just a huge big scam. The check is bad everything about his bad. This is mail fraud for sure!!
So let’s scam the scammers. I want every one of you to fill out the form that I filled out.

Make them work for this. They had to spend $6.65 to send you this three-day USPS Prioiorty letter. Waste their time!! Sure it’s small peanuts to them, but it’s worth it to make them work for nothing. Let’s get these guys back!!

I've had this happen to me enough times that I simply throw it away. I haven't known what to do about it. I took the first one to the police, but . . . now I know to take it to the post office instead. Thanks for the info!

I received this packet & a “official” check for $2900.00 last week. I knew fairly quickly that it was a scam. I mean who /what business would send a check for that amount to someone sight unseen!!! They have e-mailed me every day asking me to contact them but I haven’t. I was thinking about turning it in to the SBI or the FBI. I ‘m sure there are people who are trusting & are getting scammed. The letter & Check are a felony in our state.!!!

I tried to call USPS to report them, but all they do is want you to fill out a brutally long-form online. I'm disappointed at how hard it was to report them. Reporintg mail fraud should be easier.

I’ve received about three checks over the last couple years...Always remember: If you didn’t work for a check, or aren’t expecting any money, no one will EVER send you a check for thousands of dollars and tell you to cash it and send them money. It’s common sense , but thanks for posting this for those who need it. Especially the part on how to get them back 😂I’m surprised the authorities haven’t gotten a handle on this scam yet.

Sadly the authorities don’t really care to spend time dealing with this. So many dead ends and ways to cover your tracks. It just gets worse and worse and the scammers are winning.

Thanks for the advice. I got my check in the mail yesterday and similar instructions for an Ebay/Wal-Mart Survey Program. I really appreciate knowledge you gave on what to do with the check. The same thing happened to me but it was a $4,900 check and instead of gift cards they wanted me to buy 4 blank money orders of $1,000 each from Walmart. The letter I received was super demanding saying I had only 48hrs to complete or I will receive a penalty. I knew it had to be a scam! Please be aware people. There’s many job scams out there trying to take advantage of people.

They almost got me with the same scam. Lucky for me, my bank as well as a few other people in the F.B.I. stopped all of there mess. I went right to the back where it is drawn on and they were shocked on how good the check was and that was a real account with $21.00.

Hi Terry from Maple Valley , Wa..I just watched program , I just got a check for $2900.00 , but there was no paperwork .I was getting text's by a person giving me instrutions .Over the last two years ,I have recieved over 10 + scam checks ,over $ 2500 + fake value . I have found that the Post Master locally was not interested.I have found that these are closed or Stolen Checks .L would like to see these Scammers Caught.

Are the paperwork involved for the US postal service to do anything is really mind numbing. I wish it was easier. I wish they would do some thing about it. I too have gotten many scam checks. The last set of checks I got was sent via FedEx. I called the company that the check was sent from.

I got this same exact package and I completely fell for it!! I’m tracking them down I even asked my bank to hold the check they said it was fine, 2 weeks later it bounced so then my bank tried to get me for the money but thankfully it was recorded and the teller and supervisor that I asked if for sure it was ok they both confirmed to me it was ok thank goodness for banks recordings and they could hear me and wrote it off !! I’m in the process of tracking a few of these people are from so far I found 1 in Columbus Ohio and Massachusetts and Maine!! I have there address as well ! People do not cash these checks!!! SCAM

This happened to me twice, the second time quite recently, and I simply shredded the checks and instructions in both instances. A dead give away was atrocious grammar and English.

@@Thomasclifford I didn't quite notice how bad it was at first, but a red flag I easily caught was that all numbers were written numerically (2) instead of spelled out (two), which is just unprofessional and sloppy in my eyes.

Soo soo glad I found you! Immediately when I received the letter I was certain it was a scam! The letter is generic as hell, doesn't even look official. There are tons of grammatical errors! Oh but get this...they spelled my name wrong on the check and left off my last name. I can't wait to report this!!

I’m so glad you realized it’s a scam. So many people do not. I would absolutely call the financial that is on the check, there’s not a lot they can do, but if the account number is real, then they can take action against that account holder. Sadly the post office won’t do much about this. The red tape to even report the issue is brutal. They don’t want the little guys, they want the big guys.

The 1st check my name was misspelled badly and it's an easy name to spell, the 2nd check spelled my first name correctly but no last name so I could be any Sheila in the world trying to cash this dam thing! The 3rd one finally had my first AND last name on it! 3 checks within 24 hours...SERIOUSLY?

Me hey I just deposited a big check. Thank god I found out it was a scam before I did the task. I have a question... if I don’t spend a dime of it and it bounces will I be fine? I had 2 of them last month. One for Walmart and one for the car advertisement. I told the Walmart one that I called the bank on the check because my bank could not deposit the check, And their responded was " That's not possible, try it again". I told the their bank said that account was closed and they are doing a scam investigation on the account. Let's just say they didn't want to talk to me anymore. I did the exact same thing to the car advertisement scam except I ask them for a money order. That guy place me on hold to speak with his imaginary boss. But all I got was his friend dial tone. Lol 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂. Next time Imma tell them I spent the money on bills 😂 😂 😂

When you read the email or letter, you can see the typos and incorrect grammar lets you know that it is a scam before you complete the form.

Some people just need to give it up and get a real job. These so called people sit there all day long trying to think of different ways to take people for their money. That effort could be used in actually earning your own money. But anyways this is actually happen to me I got the email about what was going to happen. They sent me the package and everything. Thee a check that was in it that when the check came it was way over any amount that was dead in any of my correspondence with him so I went so far as to go to the bank and see if the check was real of course it was real but just like you said it would have bounced as soon as the bank gave me the the money I would have had to pay it back myself so what I did was I told the guy that I'd send the check back I never did actually sent it to the bank and they told me to take a number that was from one of the departments in the FBI and they had me send all correspondence to the them and I don't know what happened after that but that was it and definitely never ever ever cash a check that you didn't earned yourself that comes with a W-2 form

Wow I’m so glad I checked see if this is a scam! They send me the same thing and it say $980.24 and keep $200 the rest goes into the google play gift card. I had a customer try and cash one of these checks again today. Today it was being marketed as a mass mailer program, and the $1900 check was to cover the cost of supplies so that the "new employee" could get started with their new job as a mass mailing representative.

do nothing! The check will bounce. Just string the scammers on. Just make excuses. Waste their time. Do not, I repeat, do not buy any gift cards.

They also mentioned that my package is on its way. Would it be ok if I just ignore it completely? Even if they have my address ? @tommytrc, thanks for your video! I had this happen to me with a slightly different variant (personal assistant job which included a gift card donation) and I lost $2000. I have the police subpoenaing the store the scammer had me buy gift cards to (the store has the scammers real/fake information...) but since this will probably go nowhere, I'm considering taking your suggestion seriously, signing up for this scam, and screwing these guys out of $7 repeatedly as my new side hobby.

They almost had me. As soon as they asked for pictures of the gift cards, I knew something was up. I got a refund from Best Buy and I still sent them the pictures of the gift cards. Lol I’ll just keep them busy. If anything, I may have scammed the scammer by 2,400 dollars. I deposited the check a few days ago and it seems like it processed successfully. Maybe this is money laundering?

I just got a text message at 7:30am here in California from a “Henry Thorpe” with a Texas area code saying that he has a job for me. I googled the website and saw that it was a secret shopper gig. I’m cool. I don’t know who this person really is but, I will now place a block on that number. Be on the lookout for: “momentum customer metrics .com” 🤦🏽‍♀️ I don’t trust it🤷🏽‍♀️

@@tommytrc I can spot them right off the bat now. They're always from out-of-state companies. They're always in an amount around 2,500 to $3,500. And they have a certain look to them. The last three I got looked exactly the same except for thedifferent company names. They run this as a secret shopper scam but they're also trying it out on people who are selling things on Craigslist.

@@oblongfan1 the secret shopper scam has been going on for quite some time now, 10 to 15 years, and they've definitely evolved. At a lot of places larger checks are more heavily scrutinized than smaller ones. They probably think that with a smaller check the odds of someone cashing it are greater.

My husband literally just deposited his scam check yesterday but the funds wont be there till tomorrow. So I take it he should just leave it be and talk to the bank correct? And the funny thing is the name on the check was the name of a company called All Stat portable llc which is a real company. All of thos gives me a headache.

Received email from my school email. I applied and they texted me that the package should arrive. I received the package on mail with the check and deposited the check. Now that I saw your video I don’t know what to do. Btw haven’t done the assignment sign to me.

To buy time, tell then you deposited it...BUT DO NOT REALLY DO IT... and the bank put a hold on the funds. This will buy you a few days. I told them that I was on my way to the bank..then I slipped and fell and had to go to the hospital. I made up some huge story and strung them along for a few weeks.

They texted me this morning and I replied I have forwarded this information to my local police and officer so and so is handling this case. I said I will provide her with your telephone number so she can reach you. They stopped texting me lol.

wise - similar thing happened here. asked teller to verify first - led to bank manager and I sitting down for more investigation - showed good account [of another person in another State] the main branch investigated more and they found the same information and I gave them the bad bank check and the letters while I remained untouched by the fraudulent activity [i remained a student, not a participant] :)

It happened to me last 3 years ago, when i recieve the package it says the same thing. Then i go to cash check to replace the check but the teller told if i am serious coz the check is fake😣 i am just lucky the teller is filipino coz if she s not they wull call a cop.then i tell the whole story and she said those are scammer. And then the ff day scammer called me i said i alredy replace the check igot the money and they want me to send there portion 2000$ and the things that i bought keep it and the change worth 700$ is mine too..haha they keep on calling me everyday in a week..my point is whe are in united states and im just shock that it hapoens here he said they know my address and they are everywhere. Theyr sound muslim thats why i block there number so they ll stop calling me..😁✌✌

It’s February 2020 and we just received one of these... I talked to our USPS, they told me even the label is fake; they purchase one label and make several copies of it. So they are not spending much money to send them out....

I dont know if you'll see this but a friend of mine was sent something similar to this just today (5/18/2019). It's supposed to be Amazon she's supposed to buy Amazon gift cards from retailers blah blah blah. The difference is she was sent a U.S. Post office money order for the amount of 985 dollars. It is printed out and everything but it is not made out to her or have her address on it. On top of that she doesn't even have a bank account. So she's planning on cashing it at one of those 1% check cashing places. So what I'm asking is if she's being scammed? Especially since there is no way it will be deposited and it's a money order not a check? Any help would be appreciated

Jack Crow hello, thanks for reaching out. The check cashing place should spot this forgery in a NY minute! They are trained to spot such things. I would be shocked if they don’t. I’m sure this is a scam. If it doesn’t feel right..it’s a scam. I would go in knowing it’s fake and ask the people there their opinion on it. They will know. If you try to pull one over on the, then you are at fault and could get in trouble.

I had a variation on the same scam...but instead of a bank check it was post office checks...but the same deal...so what i did was researched the name and address of the person that sent me the check and i couldnt find the person . i have an account with 2 services that locates people and do background checks...so when i couldnt find them i went to the post office and asked them to look at the checks...even though they looked official they were fakes...so i went to the police dept. and contacted the better business bureau and gave them the info about the company...oh and my girlfriend had gotten checks too to do the same thing...i put us both on the application....lol

Email was sent to my school email address, just received the check today. $2,910 to buy 5x$500 Walmart cards, 350 for my pay, and $50 for a cashiers check made out to American Cancer Society. How nice of them to be so giving and concerned for the cancerous. -_- the company was called “Consumer Censure Inc”. Go ahead and google it. Never a bother. Now that you’ve blocked them, just forget about it and move on. They won’t do anything. This is totally a numbers game. They send out hundreds if not thousands of these, and the people who actually cash the checks and get back to them, they will play games with them. Now that you have blocked them, they will move on. Most likely you won’t hear of this again. You’ll just be smarter and know next time that it’s a scam.

No no no. You won’t get into any trouble. Just DO NOT spend it. The bank will reverse the amount so as long as you don’t touch it. You’ll be just fine. Remember. Do not spent the money. It will get flagged by your bank. Rest assured on that.
