Tracy: How did I miss this video you posted re: FMQing feathers??? Been looking at a lot of FMQing videos on various YT channels, to ensure I have enough info before I start using my 12 1/2" quilt squares and stumbled on this one. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how your feathers turned out in this tutorial! You've obviously been practicing a lot! Your idea of dividing the square in half and marking the quilt square with lines up and down the feather spines is such a great idea. I'm finding out that there's so much more prep to do (sewing machine thread tension testing, stitch length, machine foot pressure, sync'ing fabric movement to stitch speed, etc.) than I had originally thought. Obviously, I need to do a lot of testing before beginning the 12 1/2" quilt square quilt project! I've decided that I'm going to burn a few of the quilt squares doing all the necessary machine adjustments using black thread (recently purchased So Fine Superior polyester 50 wt. 😉) so I can see how things are going before I switch over to the So Fine white thread to start the FMQing quilt project in your video series. Thanks so much for doing these tutorials! Your courage to learn FMQing during while filming these videos is very inspiring to the rest of us who don't have as much courage to try this on our own! Brav-a!

@@TheSewingChannel Exactly, it takes practice, practice, practice! I tend to do a lot of research before jumping into anything, like I did with backpacking years ago. By the time I went, I knew how to read the atmospheric weather patterns, first aid in the back country, how to deal with black bears, proper way to pack a backpack, etc. I need to have some sort of knowledge base, and the right tools, before I jump into a project, like I did with quilting. Once I jump in and start, I'm fully ready and committed. So, I'll be jumping in within the next day or so. BTW: I bought a set of disappearing, water clearing ink fabric markers so I would have these when I was ready to jump in with both feet and start FMQing my projects. Didn't know that they existed until watching one of your videos. After watching this video re: feathers, I'm happy that I got them and can't wait to use them to plan out my FMQing patterns. Thanks! 😉

Great tutorial on curling feathers! This tip seems to be one that few quilters explain when demonstrating beautiful flowing feathers (I don't see it in one of my favorite books on different styles of feathers). One suggestion though that has nothing to do with your beautiful feathers; try to find a foot for your machine that allows you to move the quilt sandwich more easily. Some feet have a screw type knob that will allow the quilter to adjust the height of the foot. Both my Juki and Janome domestic machines have adjustable height feet. Just don't set the foot too high. A foot that is too high will allow the fabric to flag (move with the needle and hand motion) and that movement on the thread will cause it to fray and break.

Thank you! I am confused though by your term "indent." Do you mean to make the first feather smaller or that the bottom line should touch the vein right next to where the top line meets it. Thanks for the great tutorial. I struggle with FMQ. I find that my whole body gets involved: mouth opens and closes, head sways etc., echoing what my hands are doing. Question please, what marking pen has been removed successfully for you? I use the Clover White Marking Pen for dark fabrics and have never, ever had a problem removing the mark (I always test first to be safe). However, for lighter fabrics, I'm hesitant to use the blue pens because a friend did an entire quilt and it didn't remove (didn't test first).

Beautiful. How long did it take you to become so proficient? Are there such things as old machines which just will NOT quilt. With and without a walking foot. Feed dogs up and feed dogs down. As in, refuses to do any sort of quilting. Not free motion. Not stitch in the ditch. Nothing!!

Loosen the presser foot pressure. Then lower the feeddogs for free motion sewing, leave them up for straight lines. A walking foot is helpful here too. Normally, presser feet are on top of, holding, two layers of cotton weight fabric. A quilt sandwich adds the thickness of batting. There should be an adjustment knob, dial or lever somewhere near it. Adjusting the foot upward allows for the extra thickness. You may have to loosen the thread tension also. Instruction booklet for your machine should demonstrate the adjustments. I have also seen generic instructions in books, like a Singer, beginners sewing guide, or online. Just google, adjusting presser foot. This is also helpful when sewing denim, corduroy, prequilted, faux fur or thick decorator fabric.

@@paulinelarson465 thank you so much Pauline. Sage advice. I have tried various pressures with the presser foot. But I will try again. 👍
