CIRCLE OF TONE. I did, helped a lot with my own noodlings with my 6505 combo. Gary’s tone can be used in any context in a Metal scenario and be killer as hell
Alex Skolnick? Always liked his sound. Jeff Waters is a genius though - in coming along that bit later, he melded thrash with the melodic element of Alice in Chains, and I've always liked that mix...
never listened to Annihilator before. Never heard of em. But I must say - thank you for introducing me to this. This is among the the greatest music I've never heard. Bring back 80s speed metal I say! im pretty sure THESE guys weren't snapped to a metronome aka drum machine.
Actually, Jeff Waters used nothing BUT a drum machine to write his music lol. He has stated this many times in interviews. In fact, in the studio he records all the guitar tracks using a click track, then the drummer has to play his part after that!
He has a machine like right hand and a soulful left hand. Perfect for solos and ryth. Not may people can do both that well. Loomis, Gary Holt etc are a rare breed.
Hope you do a Samael "Ceremony of Opposites" video, that crunch is unreal!! I'm always amazed with it when I watch the "baphomet's throne" music video. Cheers from Brazil.
Growing up Jeff watters was a massive influence on me. Such a genius writing and playing.... and best of all a really down to earth bloke with no hint of diva strain in him
I haven't had much sleep last night so when you said you met Jeff Waters at NAMM I had a brain fart and for a split second I thought you meant Vietnam.
Oh man! Alice in Hell! Great song that my high school band used to cover. Not the high school, but I band I was in during high school. Now I feel ancient. Ha ha!
again thanks for this!!! lost the job of 17 yrs an you made me forget about that hope i can find another. keep up the great work thanks again for sharing !!!! bless you!
Dude. Thank you. It was just killing me how nice and thumpy the guitars sound in Alison Hell. I don't have the physical amp/speaker, but I got sims, and the SD1. I think I may have been using it wrong this whole time. Just cranked the level knob and didn't even touch the drive. Which - I think everyone might be doing. That'll teach me for following the herd, I guess.
Are you going to move to an OD1 from the SD1 ? SD1 is more like (almost identical to) a TubeScreamer. I believe the circuitry is a little different in the OD1. Jus' sayin' like ...
CIRCLE OF TONE. Hey that's fine you don't have to be skillful and you can try the song into the night from that very album it's really catchy and basic and fun to play as well
Owen, have you ever thought about doing Manowar from the Ross the Boss era, I’m not a big manowar fan, I love the stuff where they actually played metal (Into Glory Ride, Battle Hymns and Hail to England) not when they just sang about playing it.
CIRCLE OF TONE. I do believe they still are the loudest band ever. Wasn’t there also something about the drummer having steel kits and that he just destroyed wooden kits, probably just bravado. Loving the videos by the way, they’ve made me to decide to attempt to learn the guitar again at 32. I’ve always had an interest in the gear and what not, but I’ve lacked the perseverance in the past to actually play it. Let’s bring back 80s speed metal!!!!
Hmmm, Fredman Studio wasn't pioneers in their recording techniques with straight and angled mics. I'm from Russia. There is a proverb in Russia: "Everything new ones is well forgetted old ones"
Nice vid cot. But could do a vid on something a little bit more recent? I love the classic tones and will always prefer a good scoop in the mids but was wondering about the tone off of Order Of The Black by Black Label Society. Zakk Wylde is always fun...
There's something to be said about the old school ways of recording and getting a proper tone you're using simple gear. Technology has a place advancements in electronics has a place in music. It's knowing how to use it properly is what counts. Great Rundown. Really crisp tight tone!
Great! I love 'Alice in hell', must watch the video now. I went to see Judas Priest in-90(or-91?) and got Annihilator+Pantera aswell! 🤘 A truly great evening! 🎼🎸Rock on'
Great video!!! (I've always prefered Never, Neverland) Is there any chance you could show us secrets of the tone of my absolute favourite record of all times which is None So Vile by Cryptopsy? I can't sleep not knowing what's behind this sick tone...
"The drum track in this video ..." sounded damned good considering nobody has the time to record real drums for these videos that showcase GUITAR tone. :)
Could you make some Kemper profiles? Or is that against the Circle of Tone commandments? Oh dear... I've been bad haven't I... you're going to ban me from the channel now. 8O(
hey dude, absolutely insightful! *there's a RU-vidr called lambchopper678 which I'm sure you've seen or heard of... and he receives high acclaim for 'achieving' Dime's tone and people in the comments revere this guy... but it is my absolutely unbiased opinion that he is messy, bad articulation and kinda lazy and doesn't have Dime's tone by a longshot... I'm not hating on this guy and he definitely does nail most of the songs but for people to say 'dime would be proud' or 'the best dime covers ever' etc is a bit over the top. i would LOVE to hear your opinion. cheers
Two things that don't make sense here about the pedal. First of all, the message that Jeff apparently sent to this Alberto person says the OD-1 pedal settings were at 7 o'clock, but that would mean ZERO (as in, nothing at all) on both the Level an Overdrive ! There wouldn't be any sound ! WTF.. Secondly, you're using an SD-1 for your demo, not an OD-1, which is not be the same.
? I know the pedal is a slightly different design but can you explain the settings again? Because I don't think I've ever used any boost or distortion that has anything close to unity gain. It's not Alberto saying it, he's screen capturing what Jeff said his settings were.
The OD-1 pedal settings sent by Jeff @4:20 in the message say both the knobs (Level and Overdrive) are supposed to be 7 o'clock, not 1 o'clock like you're showing @3:52
@@CIRCLEOFTONE - Wrong. First of all, you're mixing apples and oranges here between LIVE and recording. Proof of that is, Jeff has posted his guitar recording chain online numerous times in the past, which specifically refers to things like a Drawmer mic Pre/Compressor. So to make it short, I'll explain. The 7 o'clock on the pedal DOES mean unity (or maybe just a tad above it). THEN he was boosting after the pedal with the amp and a preamp/comp after the mic. That's what would be the make up for rest of the gain, since the Drawmer 1969 Mercenary is pretty much all output gain. I've owned a single channel 1968 before. It's all about gain staging.
So you are telling me the correct gain and level is on zero on the pedal? Haha. Yeah I can't do that because there is no volume if you do that. It must have been a hell of a eq boost to make zero signal push the front end of a low/med gain amp. I can believe it if the level is 6 or above and the gain is zero because I do that all the time. But both on zero is crazy talk. It's muting the guitar at those settings. You can't have gain staging with no signal. That's not unity. That muted.
I agree. He seems to think he nailed it, but I'm not hearing it and there's also a few things he totally missed. First of all, the OD-1 pedal settings sent by Jeff @4:20 in the message say both the knobs (Level and Overdrive) are supposed to be 7 o'clock, not 1 o'clock like shows @3:52 and he's not even using an OD-1, he's using an SD-1. That's just for starters.
Where did I claim I recreated his tone? I just told you what he used. I don't have a live band, console, tape etc or his hands so what do you expect? I'm using a fkn drum machine. Haha. Jesus. If I said I nailed his tone in the title you would have a point. And "absolutely nothing like the tone" is bs anyway. A Fender clean and a Strat would sound nothing like the tone.
Honestly, to this day in 2022, I still haven't heard anyone ever recreate Jeff's tone properly. Another thing is, all you have to do is look at the amount of gear Jeff uses in his studio and you'll realize it isn't just about using a Marshall with a Boss pedal and SM-57 microphone. That's just utter nonsense, regardless of what Jeff has said about it. Trust me, there's far more going on than meets the eye.. or ear. Although, I was also told by Dean Wells of Teramaze that Jeff has consistently relied heavily on a certain modded Marshall from the 1980's and ironically, Van Halen was reliant on a similar type of Marshall amp as well. Maybe that's why Jeff seems to be so obsessed with Van Halen. His Facebook page even shows a clearly ridiculous obsession. MXR Phase 90, Marshall, Shure mic.. same usual suspects. But again, it isn't just about that. There are several other factors that have to deal with recording and mastering. Ever notice how many compressors Jeff has in his studio? That should be the first clue. He collects them like a kid that collects baseball cards.
May be tough ones, but I think either kreator's 'extreme aggression', destruction's 'release from agony', testament's 'new world order', or dominus's (michael poulson from volbeat's original band) 'the first 9' would be really cool (I know lots of ideas haha, but those are my favorite old school guitar tones).
