The secret to the proper sink location depends on a few factors. The most important being the plumbing. If your plumbing is not movable, then the decision is pretty much made for you. However, if you have the ability to put your kitchen sink in any location, this video will talk about some of the best places to put your sink in the kitchen.

Somewhat unrelated subject: please consider doing an episode on where to locate the trash can/recycling in a kitchen. If keeping hidden under sink, how do you minimize odors (besides throwing out trash very frequently)? Thanks for your consideration.

@B W I moved mine to the bottom cabinet next to my sink (trash to the right of the sink), with the dishwasher on the left side of the sink! As a right handed person, I can put dirty dishes on the right of the sink, scrape into the trash, and then move the dish either to the sink to hand wash or across the sink to the dishwasher. It’s super ergonomic and one of my favorite/most functional parts of my kitchen! (Excited to hear what you have to say though Mark!)

I don’t notice smells from trash if I empty it daily and that was always the accepted norm when I was growing up - carry out the trash when cleaning up the kitchen for the night. I actually don’t often do that myself, but my trash container is purposely small since I live alone so I don’t forget about it until it smells.

I prefer the sink under the window because I enjoy washing dishes and looking outside.

Great show….my husband and I watch your show…we love it and putting full doors under sink…YES!!!! Slam dunk, home run, touch down!!!🏀⚾️🏉….keep them taters coming 😂😂😂😂👍🏻🙌🏻 and on another note…sure helps when you are washing greens and cleaning them to cook to have the extra light from window to make sure no bugs in the greens🐛🐞🪲😝

Sink under window because it is very efficient since upper cabinet is not practical and to put a window elsewhere usually eliminates an upper cabinet. So if you are going to have a window either for light or view then over the sink is the most efficient place.

What a cool piece of history added. I had no idea. Our Ikea kitchen is in now. Painting and flooring are happening now through Wednesday. Wish I could share photos. One tip I'm still in need of ... Backsplashes! We have ceiling height cabinets with about 2-3 inches around the window. What's the trend on backsplash going all the way up to the ceiling and around the window? I

Hey! I'd love to see photos! mark@mtkd.ca As for the tiles, 2-3 inches is not going to give you enough space to make a larger tile look right. If they are smaller circular or hexagonal type tiles, it may look really nice if you cary it all the way up.

One thing is if you don't "need" to change the location of your sink you can avoid getting permits if you are just replacing like for like. but great video!

Sink under window is best as you have a view to look out whilst doing dishes and not just looking at a wall!

My main sink in the kitchen doesn’t have a window and is full door and standard dishwasher but when we did the Butler’s Pantry, we installed the sink under the window with false front and a dishwasher drawer, looks beautiful! 😬 so I have the two options. 😁

@@MTKDofficial it’s amazing, say you had a small dinner party, thanksgiving or a small breakfast and you are leaving the house for the weekend, done, with a dishwasher drawer you can wash only those few items, it helps with baking and to wash specific things not having to wait to load the entire thing. Good to note some brands call it dishwasher drawer but they open like any other dishwasher just being shorter and looking similar to a countertop dishwasher, just as good and just as powerful but very quiet!

1:40 One theory as to why a toilet is often called 'the loo' is that in less sanitary times the contents of the chamber pots were tossed out the window preceded with the call of "gardy-loo" (watch out for the water), cautioning passersby that something unpleasant was about to come down to the gutter.

4:17 Those corner sinks look really clumsy to use, especially 4:21 the drainboard with the shallow bowl where you have to reach across the deep bowl. 4:35 those circulars are pretty, and are very nice as long as you don't have to use them.

It looks like a Ruvati. But I'm not exactly sure. They have very similar models.

My current sink is in front of a small window. There isn’t really anything pretty to look out at. I wanted the window bigger, but doesn’t look like that will be an option. In moving the sink to our future island, I never considered plumbing and how it will affect the the type of base we’ll have. A good reason to have a designer. 😉 That being said, I was going with doors. The the ikea planner said the bottom part pulls out towards you. So now I’m guessing if I’m going to keep that base, we’ll have to have space behind the base for plumbing (we’re on a concrete slab). 🤦🏻‍♀️ Back to the drawing board.

You could consider pulling the sink base forward 3". This would leave room for plumbing behind and it is easy to do.

That squared-off, two-sided corner sink is foreign to me (never seen one before). When my husband and I bought our townhouse in 2000, the kitchen had a top-mount rectangular stainless steel sink. Could not move the sink when we renovated the kitchen because there was nowhere to move it in our 10'x12' L-shaped kitchen. Our kitchen has a 24" deep box bay outside of the floor space for the kitchen. The framed window itself is 60" H x72" W. So...we were stuck with keeping the plumbing in place and instead installed a D-shaped sink with the straight edge in front and the rounded side facing the wall.

The bump out is more for the look than any functional reason. It would give you little extra space behind the faucet. Otherwise, it's just to mix things up and spend more money. lol

Corner sink - even worse when a dishwasher is involved! I had a small kitchen with a small U shape - sink at the end of the U and dishwasher at right angle on one side. Very inconvenient.

I HATE my corner sink. Plus the last person put 2 narrow windows on either side to look out the f and they are soooo hard to reach and open. Sucks!

NO NO NO sink on the island if it's your only sink! Think about how often you need to fill a pot, and how much it's gonna splash when you carry it back to the stove. How often do you have a hot pan that needs to go right into the sink? How often do you need a quick splash of water to deglaze a pan. What if you have a kids underfoot in the kitchen. Are you going to carry a hot pan or pot of pasta to be drained over their heads? Think about this. Are you going to pile your dirty dishes on that island? Don't do it people. Just forget about it. However, think about keeping space under the sink for a reverse osmosis system. Our county water got worse over time and we had to remodel to hold those tanks to get rid of our stinky water.

Sink under window, you got light from outside, and it's where the most boring work is done. So the window makes it better. If you want to look at a wall, you have a sad life.

Depends. Is it a 90 deg. sink or a sink on an angle? Also, the plumbing is going to determine what is possible. There will always be wasted space in a corner to some degree, but adding bottom mount pullouts can make what is available easier to access.
