I was there at Woodbine with friends that day when Big Red raced his last race at Woodbine in Oct '73. It was a miserable, cold and rainy day, but it was well worth it to go and watch this terrific horse win. History in the making. Woodbine was JAM PACKED that day to watch Secretariat. What a day, wow. RIP Big Red.
I just absolutely love the call when Secretariat takes the lead, it was just what everyone came to see and the call was perfect... there he goes there he goes, gives me goosebumps!!!
I was so disappointed when they stopped racing Secretariat...a void that has never been filled since. Alot of great race horses, but they retired the greatest legend too early. He's still the greatest race horse of all time...
Yup...But I also realized he would have been more mature and those records he has would have been even lower...Those races would have been insane had they given him another year or 2...lolz.
i love the way Eddie Maple narrated Secretariat's last race.He spoke with warmness and respect for this great horse.I also watched the you tube Laffit Pincay interview whwrein Pincay said Secretariat is the greatest horse he has ever seen.
What a great twosome 💙🇺🇸💙 Watched Secretariat back 46 years ago💙 This horses ability to drown and sink his competition was beyond talented. I don’t think you’ll ever see a legend like Secretariat’s speed and athleticism again in this world. God had his hand in creating Big Red.
Nack describes in detail the circumstances around each loss that was mismanagement. Tho first race at 2 he was slammed/sandwiched out of gate. Watch it here and how he weaves thru and cld have won it with just few seconds more. You ought to read that bio, it's fabulous. Belmont alone is 8 pgs long ! All the tension and buildup is there on all his races, first time Charles Hatton laid eyes on him was surreal, gave me goosebumps. First time Arcaro looked him over and what he said.
I was on the Great Lakes on the ship Reserve ( sister ship to Edmond Fitzgerald ). It was a exciting race and when Secretariat won 🏆 I had tears in my eyes 👀.
❤ THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS EPIC LAST RACE. SECRETARIAT....❤ ALL HEART AND SOME FAST LEGS.....AND GREAT JOCKEY....BET HE NEVER WENT THAT FAST ON ANY OTHER RACE HORSE. I HEARD HE COULD GO 5O MPH.AND I'M PRETTY SURE SECRETARIAT MAY HAVE GONE THAT FAST AT THE BELMONT. SO GLAD SECRETARIAT WAS ABLE TO GIVE TRIBUTE TO CANADA. I LOVE THIS RACE....IT SEEMED LIKE HE WAS JUST GETTING STARTED....I BELIEVE HE WANTED TO RUN FURTHER IF THEY WOULD HAVE LET HIM. GOD BLESS YOU ALL & ALL OF THOSE WHO MADE SECRETARIATS LIFE A LIFE OF ADVENTURE AND LOVE. GOD BLESS ALL THE HORSE RACING FANS TOO. R.I.P. = RACE IN PEACE : BIG RED. LOVE AND PRAYERS. P.S. MY LATE SON HAD BOUGHT A PAIR OF COWBOY BOOTS WHEN HE WAS OUT WEST. I LOOKED AT THE NAME ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BOOTS IT SAID......"ARIAT". AND I HEARD SOME ANOUNCER AT ONE OF THE TRIPILE CROWN RACES RECENTLY SAYING THAT THEY NAMED A BRAND OF COWBOY BOOTS AFTER SECRETARIAT. NAMED "ARIAT". ZACH LOVED THOSE COWBOY BOOTS. AND I LOVE THAT SOMEONE MADE COWBOY BOOTS IN HONOR OF SECRETARIAT. MAY THEY BOTH MEET EACH OTHER IN HEAVEN AND RACE IN PEACE TOGETHER.
I agree Nicky.I was only 11 years old in'73 and I wrote Secretariat's name all over my school folder. He was a once in a lifetime gift who unknowingly lifted us up when this country needed to believe.
I am so glad my own Big Red, Curlin, raced into his fourth year. Secretariat was pure magic, and Curlin was pure magic. Perhaps Curlin was a continuation of Big Red, finishing his work.
Oh m' God ! I love the fan sentiments. Like the Pony Express of old.. in rain, sleet, snow flurries, no matter the weather, even 6 deg above freezing, he comes around that last turn, steam smokin' fm his nostrils, lookin like a medieval charger, and a first time jockey, none of it mattered. If only Secretariat cld have run at Four, what wld we have seen !
Secretariat is the greatest TC champion. His sire,Bold Ruler,is the greatest sire. His great granddaughter,Rags to Riches,is the Belmont stakes Queen, being the only filly to win it at a mile & a half.American Pharaoah is his 1st progeny to win the Triple Crown.
Actually the Great Filly who BEAT Curlin in the Belmont fair and square, Rags to Riches, is a great grand-daughter of Big Red...she looks alot like Big Red, with the little snout and the blaze. Rags to Riches was AWESOME!!!!!!
Eddie did a great job, he just let Secretariat do his thing and that is pretty much what Ronnie did, Secretariat was a self driving horse he knew exactly what he wanted to do and did it his way!! Best ever!!!!!
Ronnie knew his buddy. He got on, hung on, and let the magic that was Secretariat do his thing. It was beautiful. He had jet-propelled wings on his feet. Long live the king! 💖
I often think they retired him too soon, though I understand their reasoning. Risk of injury, he'd make more money as a sire, etc. But at 3, he had a couple of years of growth and development ahead of him. As great as he was, how much greater could he have been?
@Insert Name DOH! I should have read my assignment instructions more carefully. Especially if I'm going to volunteer to throw my two cents in. Thank you for the link. I will delete my wrong advice to avoid wasting anyone else's time. Dammit.
Well, don't fret, Turcotte talked to Eddie and told him what to do with Secretariat, just stay with Kennedy Road and when to make his move and just signal to Sec that o.k., bud, time to move. Turcotte also has said Sec cld ride for any jockey. Don't know if you realize Turcotte was suspended in states for some infraction. The video of Belmont at beginning of this video is clearest I've seen. Too bad they haven't used latest technology to clean up video and audio.
@ bon1042 I read that to kick Secretariat into super running status, Ron Turcotte made an obscure gesture by his ear! After that the rest is history! It is true that Ron Turcotte was suspended when Secretariat ran his last race. I think that Eddie Maple ran a fine race with Secretariat, through the cold and slippery track. Seriously, I think that Ron Turcotte should have been given dispensation and allowed to ride Secretariat to Canadian Victory!
How odd - none of the comments I see below have anything to do with Secretariat. Nevertheless, thanks for this great video - i haven't seen any of it before. Thank you.
And God created a perfect horse in temperament, in stature and ability and beauty and speed and everything he was perfection and he a is loss to the world
Rags' win against Curlin was awesome, but Curlin proved so much more. Rags was remarkable but the race wasn't cementing her in history. I don't understand when people think one race can make a horse legendary...it doesn't. Not trying to bring you down, just explaining.
LOO..you want to play like that bud, seeya later. I have heard that was what Secretariat was like, his own horse. Yes to bad there was that prior financial obligation about putting him out to stud, damn what would he had done at age 4. Those are IFS that make you just cringe not knowing, because you know if at 4 he might had flown.
Turcotte wld never have been drunk, what an absurd bit of nonsense. If you knew his seriousness and dedication.... people make such cynical assumptions. It was a riding infraction that kept him riding Sec in the Canadian.
bon1042, you can't believe how many people deface Secretariat. I have spent a lot of time reading and defending him! Why couldn't they just make an exception and let Ron Turcotte run his last race. Eddie Maples did a fine job, but Secretariat and Ron were a team!
@@type2life396 I beg to differ! Ron Turcotte jockey extraordinaire was in the irons for most of Secretariat's races. Eddie Maples picked up the slack, when Ronnie could not not be there!
Wow !! What a TERRIBLE QUALITY VIDEO !!! Secretariat was a freak of X / Y chromosomes built into a Horse's make-up ! His heart was 1/3 larger then a regular horse !
A average thoroughbreds heart is 8-9 pounds, a really good thoroughbreds heart can be 11-12 pounds Secretariats heart was 22 pounds the largest heart ever seen in a thoroughbred
