I’m an old school IT guy and it never fails to amaze me just how long lived car computers can be. After all, integrated circuit machines hate cold, hot, going between hot and cold, going between cold and hot, oil, water, moisture and vibrations. Hats off to the guys who designed and made this stuff but also to the guys who designed the plastic housings that they live in. Thanks Jon!

I had similar intermittent problems mostly related to ignition coils and opted to buy a used one after botching an obvious dry joint and shorting the darn thing out. I agree that a repair to the PCB and or capacitors is relatively easy, my problem was that I didn't use a magnifying glass or a soldering iron with a small enough tip! I took the car to a Jaguar Specialist Near High Wycombe and they fitted and re-coded the used ECU, so it is possible to not pay dealer money for a re-code. I'm an ex Rediffusion TV engineer (35 years ago) so I knew I could fix it, but as always you've got to have the right tools for the job. By the way, in the boot, there is a label that will help with the re-coding, I think you mentioned it in a previous video John.

Thank you sir for this great video, saved me alot head scratching. So had my coil overs fail in B, C, E, H thought it was the module, switched them around same issue for same coils, took look inside the ecm found a leaky capacitor, took it to a local electronics repair guy, and told him to replace the capacitors and now its back normal again. Thank you once again for sharing such great information 👏 👍 😊

Hi just found your reply here ,I have exactly the same symptons cold start fine then after a short period engine light flicks on and poor performance sets in obd tells b.c.e.h . swapped ignition modules round round even bought a 2nd hand one same problem sensors seem to work bank 1 or bank 2 my problem straddles both banks idicating to me ecu instrution is being sent will take my ecu out and hope to find like you something obvious .Thankyou for sharing your problem and John for bringing the subject up. Good morning. I also have the same faults. B, C, E, H + group 2 ignition system failure. it's not permanent. I tried swapping the ignition modules. the same problem. Thanks to the diagram, I saw that from time to time a +5 volt is missing, coming out of the computer. on socket EM12 of the ECU socket 8. I'm at this point in my troubleshooting. I opened the ecu. the capacitors do not look bloated and are not leaking. I think I'll unsolder them to test them. (probably, I would change them, for that matter) Thank you for sharing. a company charges me €575 to repair it. It's worth looking for yourself. (I use translator, sorry) Best regard. Vincent.

Hi John, I acquired (for the second time, sold it 7 years ago) my '97 XK8 and had intermittent problems all related to ignition. My garage repaired the ECU by cleaning the board and replaced the leaking capacitors. I thought the issue came from bad treatment of the car by the previous owner, but good to see that it is a recurring problem. Happy to say that the car is again reliable as it was 7 years ago.

ECU can be changed for a used one without coding to the car, as I have done this for my 97 XK8. You will need to get the replacement ECU (with same part number it is replacing), key immobiliser transponder ECU, key transponder ring that goes around the ignition barrel and then the key and ignition barrel from the same donor car, as the modules are all coded together. Change all the parts (ECU key transponder is behind driver dash air vent RHD and can be accessed by removing instruction cluster, air vent and end dashboard fuse panel), and then the car will work with the replacement ECU. Will need to change all locks if you want matching key set or use separate ignition key and door lock key. Did this for my failed ECU as would only run on 4 cylinders, and replacement ECU's and parts have run great since for 2 years. Only cost me £75, so managed to find another set to keep as a spare as early car ECU's are harder to find and known to fail.

Hi John, another query if you have time sometime and don't mind, I'm considering getting a set ofstainless wire wheels for the xk8 and have found a Uk source DCR Autoparts located in Scotland I think, one concern was that the rear wheels are 8" and to what difference this might have in handling etc, of course the choice of same is a personal view but I think they would look choice and the picture they display really sets the car off and sets it apart. One thing I have to look into is the delivery here to NZ Inlight of the worldwide effect of cov 19 on such an item .Trust this finds you in fine fettle and enjoying the xk8.Tony.NZ

Thanks again John for sharing the ECU info and advice. I will listen for fan noise to see if it is still working on my unit. I have ordered the replacement bolts for the unit as I plan to keep this XK8 forever! Any chance there will be a similar episode for the climate control system, mine throws a couple of codes and I suspect there are common failures/replacements for 1996-1997 climate control system. Excellent video and I've rightly or wrongly purchased an XK8 with these issues based on this video and one thing i've not read or heard is that whatever capacitors are used they MUST BE to Automotive standard AEC-Q200 I'm no expert but I suspect that not all caps meet this standard - anyway another consideration / something to look out for

@@ToTheGarage So today I took it all apart which is a reasonably easy job and found one of the smaller capacitors had failed and upon inspection all of the others looked perfectly ok so I only changed the one and guess what - Yes its now working perfectly and yes I will be doing the others when its warmer, MOT'd and all of the other jobs have been done - All thanks to your video - Thanks

Top of electrolytic capacitors is scored with cross to deliberately weaken the aluminium case and bulges when pressure builds up to indicate failure.

Very useful specialist video, thank you! I wonder how many XK8s are driving around with the ECU fan broken? Recently I was hearing a strange buzzing from the passenger side of the dashboard on mine. Maybe it was that fan grumbling because it was present even with the blower motor off.

Love your videos john,got a problem with my 2002xk100 4.0 my Amp gadget only reads 11.00 volts when idleing,it won't maintain 12- or 12.5,even when revealed up,and my radio quit working all after a jump start,new to jags but still a gear head,it's driving me nuts. Please help love this car but don't know if it's a bad batt,or bad alternator, what do check Keep up the great work you have helped me so much with this car already...Tom

I have a 2002 XK8 with an intermittent issue of an all cylinders misfire somewhere in 1st or 2nd gear. Odd part is that is does not do it while using the J Gate… Has anyone heard any comments on this being related to the ECU?

I have a 2006 Jaguar XKR Victory Edition in the US. Were do I look to repair my motorized mirrors. When I pull the switch back, the mirrors close. But when I push the switch up it does nothing, then I go over to the passenger seat and push the seat back switch the mirrors open. Something not right. Can you help?? Steven

Hi Steven The correct command to open the mirrors again is two quick flicks of the joystick down again. (With the last and right mirror rocker switch in its middle position. A flick up un the joystick should do nothing. Whyte seat back switch would affect the mirrors is a mystery to me as well.

Only if re programmed by a jag dealership with full software, to recognise the other modules in the car

I want a TTG flag to fly in my front yard. For more info on other capacitor issues see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague Actually, I think you'll find that a hard reset has no effect on the TCM, just the ECU and possibly a few other modules. You'll need a special OBD2 tool to do a TCM reset. One low end tool that does this is the Foxwell NT530. See my XK8 Bible for details.

Gary...I've had sporatic issues with my 99 going into failsafe. I've always suspected the throttle body but it sounds like the TCM could be the culprit? Or, maybe both?

@@hillbilly4895 I know very little about throttle bodies used on 4.0L. John might know if there's a reset/reteach process for it. It's always useful to state your mileage when asking for advice. Have you tried cleaning Linear Switch Module or resetting TCM adaptions and doing the relearn cycle per the XK8 Bible? If those fail to rectify, I would try to find a transmission shop that can read ZF transmission adaptions for A-E clutch fluid pressures.
