In this video we look at some of the tests i an doing to diagnose and eliminate my ABS traction control and stability control faults on my 1996 Jaguar XK8.
The Wheel speed sensors and Link cables are likely (but not the only) causes of the fault.
We look at how you can check these items to avoid leaping straight into the part swapping mentality, We also look at (particularly on the Jaguar) how it is often easier to start your testing from within the engine bay rather than diving into the wheel arches.
Another video will come shortly demonstrating how to change a wheel sensor (and one which is jammed into the upright at that)
Stay safe everybody

Although I have found many faulty whl speed sensors, I have found the fault to be the link harness 10x as often. They tend to go open internally where they are ty-strapped to the control arm because there's not sufficient stress relief. I always leave the ty-strap only as tight as necessary to keep the cable routed properly and no tighter. My XJR started throwing a RF code intermittently when I made a sharp turn, I loosened the cable ties and the code has not returned in the past 2 years! Sorry for the length...another great video John!

Please don't aplogise Tom. I agree the Link wire is just as likely as the sensor. Thats why I think its such a good idea to start the testing from the top on these cars.

Hi John hope you’re well in these troubling times. I’ve been following your super serious of short shows/programmes on the XK8 and thoroughly enjoying it, so keep it going please I’d be lost without them. I’ve been meaning to write and ask for sometime now, hoping if you might investigate what appear to me a couple of secrets. I own a 1997 very early series 1 XK8 which is in reasonable good condition, this is my new weekend pass time with restoring back to its former glory. I’m an avid amateur mechanic, certainly no stranger to repairs and rebuilds mechanically in my youth. However not significantly experienced enough to know all the basics hence this ask which are as follows; Firstly the engine is a standard 4.0L engine with an aspirated carburettor . This the first secret as I see it, there is a vacuum pipe that is connected to the vacuum chamber or at least there should be! I’ve bought from Jag Classic the correct tubing to connect but not been able to establish where the other end goes to? It’s one of those little annoying details just I can’t get passed until it’s resolved no idea if it’s effecting performance or not. Secondly, and this is a bit risky mentioning it here, when I’m travelling at a brisk pace into a gusty head wind I can hear what sounds like something loose tapping/banging noise coming from the front of the engine bay. Have you had similar experience of this or some of your followers perhaps. I’ve done a sort of process of illumination and I think I’ve narrowed it down to the rubber flaps at the bottom of the fan cooling tray but not entirely convinced. Cheers Andy 0

Hi Andy I think I know what you mean re the vacuum chamber. I will have a look under my bonnet and let you know for sure but if you don't have cruise control I think its a black vacuum chamber and the little pipe on the top goes through a rubber 90 degree elbow and then a short black tube goes no where but is pushed through a small grommet on the throttle bracket. if You have cruise control then it is a silver chamber and goes to the right wheel arch where the cruise control kit is housed. On the flapping my first thought would be the number plate followed by loose front under tray, Wheel arch liners or winglets. (small mudflap looking aero devices in front of the front wheels underneath. I cannot imagine you would hear the flaps under the rad as they are relatively soft runbber. It may not sound likely but on mine when I first got it the side repeaters were loose and rattled loudly in the right conditions

To The Garage Hi John thank you so much for your reply really given me something to think about. Spooky thing is, I do have a very lose off side indicator but never imagined that would the root cause. Nonetheless have busied myself today putting it right Once again many thanks Andy

Another Great video... I was told I needed a whole new brake modulator at $4000. By a local mechanic shop ... will follow your lead to see if its something minor as you shown , Thank You... Love My XK8
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 4 года назад
Make sure you test everything before swapping that Joseph. The soldered joints inside the ABS control module are also likely causes to look at after eliminating all the sensor related stuff and before swapping the expensive modulator motor unit

My XK8 gave the ABS warning from time to time, often coming on when I was driving really slowly. I removed the ABS sensors from all the wheels and cleaned them, sometimes it helps but not for me. I then looked at the toothed ABS rings and found that a small stone or something sat between two of the teeth. I peeled it away, put the sensor back and never had an issue with the ABS anymore. Sometimes it can be really simple.

If it the module. It should cost around $1800 and you can resolder it yourself. Theres two pins that fail usually. Look at jagrepair or a forum for a fix

It was the nearside link cable when I had this issue. The problem was intermittent and I noticed it was happening when I used full lock on the steering.

I have found when your ABS sensor & cruise control shut down & go into limp mode it’s a safety feature with all XK8,s it’s simply your wheel sensors cable gone on a wheel which is buttons to replace . Diagnostics check first when a wheel sensor goes on a wheel it automatically shuts all other things down 👍

Great video very helpful! I have the same "traction control" issue, and my battery is in good shape (a weak battery often creates the same issue in a random fashion). Would you know where the connectors are for the wheels at the back to do these tests ? Presumably in the boot, behind the carpeted covers?

Excellent advice! I have the abs warning on my xk8 and I used your method to find that my front sensor lines are working properly. So I took a look at the rear wheels and it appears that the lines head into the passenger compartment from the rear wheel well. Are the connectors under the rear seats?

Dear John, I very much appreciate it that you share your knowledge and insights about the xk8 so openly. Thanks a lot. Please allow me to ask you a question about the navigation system of a Jaguar xkr model year 2003. How could I switch from displaying the navigation map on the screen to the analogue watch on the display (it's a US car imported to Europe)? Thanks for your help. Andreas

How would you do this (top down check) for the rear wheels? Or do you just go straight to the sensor?
@drummerric63
@drummerric63 3 года назад
John, thank you for all your tips! Question: have you tried to intercept the rear abs sensor wire at the connection, similar to what you demonstrated for the front? Do you know where thee wiring harness connection point might be after it enters the car body? Both my fronts test fine, but can't get to the rear other than right at the sensor on the wheel. Thanks so much for the time you spend on your channel!

You can test the rears through the multi plug on the ABS motor. One of our subscribers sent in a diagram showing which pins you need to test. I will find it and share it. (added to the list 😁)

I wonder if there is much difference between the .."Easy' way and the "Hard" way... I do have that ABS Warning...often
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 4 года назад
The Hard way is either to start testing from underneath. (if everything works from above then you don't need to) or as too many folk (and garages!) do, just start swapping and replacing until the problem goes away. This works but is expensive. and slow.

See my reply to Joseph Guastella , it can be as easy as some dirt on the sensor or the ABS ring.
