Thrand interviews Mark Fenlason production designer, special FX and weapons master of the famed TV program Deadliest Warrior. They discuss all of season one in full detail and what it was like setting up arms and armour test for the program and what it was truly like behind the scenes of one of the most iconic ancient warriors programs of all time. This includes many hidden secrets, interesting details and MAJOR REVELATIONS! Such as no Slitherine Combat simulator on the show and many improvised or faked test and how they were done plus many experts were not experts. Deadliest Warrior was the forerunner for shows such as Forged in Fire and Knife or Death so this is very special interview into the depths of what started it all.

Lol I have always been suspicious of that AI Program. The had many issues, but despite those flaws it generated a lot of interest in historical weapons and warriors, so not too bad overall.

I always rolled my eyes when the "experts" would roll out butted chainmail aka costume armor, and claim it was the real deal as it proves to be utterly useless. We all know that real chainmail is almost impervious which is why it was used for so long in history.
@Intranetusa
@Intranetusa 4 года назад
If you ever see butted chainmail, flexible "leather" armor, and/or studded armor without riveted plates underneath, then you know the media is basically portraying nonsense in the armor department.

It’s too bad that a lot of the “experts” were just actors who had no business claiming any kind of skill in any weapon. Is it really so hard to find decent martial artists who can use these weapons reasonably?

In my opinion no, just nobody really cares which is extremely sad!

I can second his statement about running away from self proclaimed experts. I used to be one. I have a friend who I used to spar with regularly, and I usually won. I got cocky and went without protective gear because I thought he wouldn't be able to touch me. I have a scar above my left hip where I got stabbed. It only penetrated about half an inch because it was blunt, but it was a mortal wound to my pride.

The show was so cool when I was younger. I enjoyed listening to his experiences behind the scenes so it’d be great to get him on again.

Pirates of the Caribbean just like Last Samurai for Viking
@the1sonder884
@the1sonder884 4 года назад
ThegnThrand They had the pirate win even though, with many misconceptions about armor and weapons, evidence showed the knight would be much more likely to win, but the programmer got upset and basically said “I feel like the tests were wrong, and knights were privileged wimps, so pirate wins.

The show did not do simulations they just picked who ever they agreed upon for popularity reasons most likely.

ThegnThrand Ah. I must have misunderstood. I thought I remembered them plugging in the info from the tests and running something like 1000 scenarios and whoever came out on top the most they would do an acting out of a scenario.

I remember watching the Ming vs Muskets episode. I was pretty pissed how the Ming's were portrayed considering that they had matchlocks/muskets but were given hand cannons instead.... And leather lamellar? Like what??? Sure they had leather armor (and better quality too), but why go for that when they had plate armor? And the only time the Ming were given the edge was the dao and that felt like pity points because historically guns didn't matter when gunowners took over.... lmao

This has always remained one of my fav shows, even all these years later. It’s kinda like WWE for me where I know it’s fake, but it’s entertaining, and there’s nothing else quite like it. This was such an awesome interview, loved hearing how it all worked behind the scenes. Thanks for doing it.

I hated how this show had a huge hard-on for Spartans for some reason.

Ever since the release of "300", parts of society had had a massive hard-on for Spartans. Spartans losing any battle would have easily estranged a large portion of their watchers.

I was around 10 when Deadliest Warrior was originally on air and to me it was in the same league of Mythbusters. I still remember some things; like a pirate popping a shot in a knights face and the ones doing Zulu getting hyped before using their spear; but now after doing years of research on making and using blades across the world... I now know that a lucky shot is all it takes to kill; its just getting into and out of situations that last a heartbeat. The more skill you have, the easier it becomes to get into and out of positions to get those shots in. Battle is outright brutal, messy and a deadly game of skill with what you have and how well you've covered yourself, because we all like life and we want to see tomorrow.

I used to be a huge fan, back when I was a kid and didn’t understand much. I started hating it when they didn’t give the centurion the segmentata armor and had him act like an idiot. Als he and Alexander got siege weapons for some odd reason. I also disagreed with Apache vs gladiator
